Fourth Chances

Carmelo Anthony, a 23-year-old forward for the Denver Nuggets, was arrested early yesterday morning on suspicion of DUI. The toxicology test to which Anthony submitted won't bear results for two weeks, but police say they witnessed him "[fail] to drive in a single lane."

Unsavory behavior has become the norm for 'Melo, who in the past few years has been suspiciously close to two drug busts and suspended from 15 games for playing a major part in a brawl between his team and the New York Knicks. Nevertheless, he's fast and tall, so, y'know, keep giving him millions.

After the jump, Anthony being ejected from a game for choking another player.

I don't understand what his being violent (along with other players) has to do with his current legal problem, the two don't seem to be related.

Don't forget his involvement in the "No Narc" scandal, where he appeared in a threatening video in his native Baltimore.

As a resident of (a tiny little town just outside of) Denver, may I say that not all of us support this jackass. My least favorite bust was the one he got out of because "the marajuana in his backpack that was detected at the airport wasn't his. His friend put his stash in 'Mello's bag." Classic. Me, I forget to pay for an apple that fell underneath my kid's blanket at the grocery store and I'm a shoplifter. Sheesh.

You know what? I'm still bothered by this, I'm sorry, maybe I just need to get back to work, but this guy isn't a monster. In the past 4 years he's been involved in four crimes (?) the airport dealie, the brawl, the video and now this. BUT he's an amazing athlete, has contributed a lot to local charites, donated millions of his own money etc. According to the NBA's official website, "Anthony's gift represents one of the largest individual donations to Syracuse University Athletics and is also believed to be one of largest by a current professional athlete to the school they attended."—this man, who was born in a hard part of Brooklyn, lost his father to cancer at age two—I don't think he's a total loser. That's just me. *sigh*

Maria, you bring up a good point- people are complex. It's just frustrating when they get away with the bad time after time.

Exactly lale, I doubt that if he were a valuable player, he'd get let off the hook so much. Sometimes I wonder if athletes should not be allowed to be drafted before they finish college. Not that it would make a person better, but he's a young guy…you know?

everybody knows that the National Basketball Association was created by the White Power Elite to encourage Black Men to be more aggressive so that they will be more likely to engage in violent acts and end up in prison. It's being done to keep another Great Black Leader from coming to power. Kill 'em DEAD!

Maria - So you're saying that he should be let off the hook because he gave a large amount of money to charity? This clearly isn't his first brush with the law and won't likely be his last. I know that if I were him, I would donate a ton of money (which is really just a small fraction of my income) in order to grease the wheels and look like a "nice, misunderstood guy".

blah, no that's not what I am saying at all. I think he's young and misguided, but not a bad person. I've had a few "brushes with the law" but I'm still a productive member of society, I pay my taxes, volunteer etc. He opened a youth development center and actually put ideas into the organization, helping thousands in Baltimore, I'm not his fricken publicist but I just think he's not a monster. Gosh, you know there are so many young kids that need good role models and if the things he did that were great where highlighted as well, then that'd be a nice change of pace. We are all imperfect…

Well, I know that I hope that my kids look up to some punk kid who chokes people, does drugs, takes cheap shots on the court and allegedly drives drunk putting tons of people in harms way.

The money he donated is for tax and pr purposes. Plain and simple.

I'm imperfect as well, but that has absolutely nothing to do with not judging someone by the characteristics that they repeatedly portray.

Well great just great, the one person who can understand where I'm coming from is a g-dman spammer. Four public flaws? That's the magic number? That's when we decide that an athlete or artist or politician is unjust of another chance. Give me a break! He made a statement to the press yesterday

"I'm here to man up to my mistake, just to let you know that I'm truly sorry for what happened and everything that's going on," Anthony said. "What happened Monday morning was truly and totally unacceptable."

He spoke for about two minutes and left without taking questions. He didn't refer to his notes, appearing instead to speak off the cuff. The team later released a written statement attributed to him.

Teammate Allen Iverson stood off to the side as Anthony spoke.

-Whatever, I don't know why I waste my time, ugh.
