Definition of barn in the south: garage, storage room, not the traditional "cows and milking and horses and pigs" sense.
Almost all larger properties have "barns", not just in the south, but on the east coast too, because they're great for storing things in the colder winters.
That's kinda messed up to suggest that they are hicks just because they have a barn.
