WTF??????
Did somebody say anachronistically racist commercial?
In case you were taking a bathroom break when it aired, let's revisit this SalesGenie.com Super Bowl ad, wherein two pandas named Ching Ching and Ling Ling speak in broken English about how to save their bamboo furniture business. Ling Ling, who can't stop eating the furniture, says they need a "sawes miracoh." A sign in the store advertises "sofaz." I mean, really?

Ling Ling can haz sofaz?
This commercial was awful. They were all disappointing this year. Except the Budweiser Clydesdales. They're cute.
As soon as that commercial aired, I turned to my hubby and said "someone's going to be offended by that."
With the exception of the Budweiser "Rocky" horse and the dancing "Thriller" lizards, this year's crop of ridiculously expensive ads were a huge letdown. In past years you couldn't wait for the commercial break , but last night was just sad.
In our market they showed an equally offensive one with an Indian family the quarter before the Chinese one aired. I was trying to find the irony in the ad, or something, but I think it was pretty much just offensive.
Wow. For a minute it felt like 1961.
Mrs. Feisty - I said the same thing! I was even watching the game with an Asian friend and waited for his reaction, which amounted to some eye-rolling and a shrug.
Word. In NYC we saw both ads, the Indian one and the Chinese one. Sad thing is the idiots probably did it on purpose just to get some press.
What I didn't understand was how someone who had a small advertizing budget(as evidenced by such a shit commercial), had enough money to be able to afford Super Bowl broadcast. Maybe that was the ironic twist they were going for?
i saw a news report on this commercial before it aired. apparently it was written by the head of the company or something. he did last years super bowl ad for salesgenie also. apparently he thought it was very funny and no one had the balls to disagree with him.
I guess the guy who owns the company is an Indian and he thinks that controversy is good press. Meh. If it were really funny…but it’s not even that funny.
maybe it was broken english because they were pandas trying to talk…
No? Too big of a stretch…okay I thought so too.
That commercial was so lame. And my husband turned to me and said "…AND THAT ISN'T CONSIDERED RACIST?" My guess is it was produced by 1. Asians or 2. Blacks because they are allowed be racist…
yes i saw the indian commercial and the panda commercial and i said these are offensive. the india guy that has 7 kids, his name and accent were just horrible the panda's accent. what a shame.
I had two thoughts when I saw that commercial:
1) This is going to be considered offensive
2) It's a really BAD/uncreative commercial! Someone actually thought it was a good idea and produced it?!
It looks like it was produced by Hanna Barberra and written by the people who brought us, Honk Kong Phooey.
You guys really called it on the racism. My boyfriend brought the commericial to my attention and asked "Isnt this the most racist thing you've seen in a long time?" and yes, it was. I cant believe someone put that on the air without realizing that!
I did exactly the same thing as you did. I turned to my husband and said, "I cannot believe it, this is terribly offensive." We were both shocked about both commercials.
Someone is getting fired today. Maybe not the douche who had the idea, but someone.
racism shmacism, but for real, mysoginy is funnier than these pandas
Well, they're pandas…
How is that racist? They're PANDAS.
P. T. Barnum sorta said that you'd never go broke under-estimating the taste of the American public.. and I think the Hurdy Gurdy Super Bowl has been the perfect medium for poor taste. If you'll recall Janet Jackson's right tit.. and the 'over the top' homophobic Snickers commercial of past broadcasts, the Asian and Indian insults that aired last night almost seem kinda slight. We might become that kinder and gentler country yet.
this commercial was not offensive.
my girlfriend and i love pandas and we are looking to buy bamboo furniture and all that sorts of stuff. we watch them on zoo webcams.
pandas are asian animals and they are speaking with asian accents. that's not offensive, that's realistic.
you are stupid if you are offended by this commercial. pandas and cute wonderful animals and i thought this commercial was awesome. we both looked at each other like "WOW!" because we were so happy. we joke about pandas eating a house full of bamboo so the part with ling ling eating the computer is funny and yes, they do make computers out of bamboo. the material is durable and bamboo grows something like several feet a month. pandas rock and so does this commercial. thanks.
a)Is patrick's post real? or is it the man who created the commercial pretending to have really enjoyed it?
b)What was it $2.7 million dollars? Well spent.
How fortunate we are to live in an age that a really bad panda comercial is this offensive.
I've got nothing against the Pandas, some of my best friends are Pandas, really.
on an historical note, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing were the names of the pandas given to Richard Nixon by the Chinese government. Presumably that's what they meant about going back to the zoo. Unfortunately, LingLing (the female, actually) died in the early-mid 1990s without reproducing. Hsing-Hsing, very lonely, died of cancer a few years later. both deaths were mourned by schoolchildren across the country (they sent Hsing-Hsing condolence cards). Our current pandas at the Washington national zoo are leased from the Chinese government. i thought it was weird that the commercial got all that right, plus pandas' insatiable desire for bamboo (there's a reason pandas are endangered. can't eat anything else), and still… well.. yeah. YOU saw it.
Yourmom: I don't know if Patrick's post is real, but I do know it is AWESOME!
"we both looked at each other like “WOW!” because we were so happy."
BWAAAAA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!
Oh, dang that is hilarious. HA!
I wish we could make synthetic bamboo for the pandas. :( I guess scientists have all got bigger fish to fry. Patrick and his girlfriend seem like a cute couple.
I can't figure out how someone approved that commercial. I also can't believe its creators spent so much money yet failed to cram in the big round glasses and buckteeth as an Asian stereotype. If you're going to pay that much to broadcast racist sentiment to one of the largest TV audiences of the year, get your money's worth and fit in all you can.
Patrick: You're French, right? Imagine that instead of Pandas the commercial starred frogs with really bad French accents and they were trying to save their beret business. Now do you see where it might be offensive?
Lisa, I didn't notice before how hilarious Patrick's post was. After being baffled by it for quite some time, I now look at it and laugh hysterically at my computer screen like a crazy person. Thank you Patrick! Pandas DO rock!
I'm happy that Patrick Duffy managed to escape from scuzzle butt's leg long enough to show us the error of our ways. i judged the panda's too harshly. They can't help that they speak Chinese.
I know, Juje, that’s not offensive, that’s realistic. Especially because pandas are all rented out by China, so you will never come across a Canadian panda. I mean even if it were born in Canada, it would be raised in China.
Ha ha ha ha. I am totally going to be disappointed when I meet a panda who doesn't talk.
First of all, that commercial was lame, if you thought that was funny, you need to upgrade your sense of humor. Second, yes, pandas come from China, but folks in China don't speak English that way, Mr Smart Ass. Only the Chinese in America speak that way, and they're not even proud of it, but they're constantly mocked by others because of it. So what the hell do you mean they shouldn't be offended by this commercial? And realistic? If you didn't notice how stereotypical that was, then that's pretty sad. If you listen to the clip closely, you can hear the grammar isn't perfect, it pokes fun at the Chinese for their inability to speak perfect English.
Learn about the culture first, or just stfu.
I found it funny that Patrick would find this offensive commercial not only amusing but also realistic. I guess it takes someone who revolves his entire life around viewing zoo webcams and joking with his wife about pandas eating "a house full of bamboo" to actually appreciate this piece of crap. Great way to spend millions of dollars only to attract two new customers.
As horribly bad as both of these spots were last night, and yes I said OMGWTF was that!, they did accomplish their main purpose. You, yes YOU, remember IT. How many of the other spots from last night do you remember…not many. But I rememember the crappy salesgenie.com spots. Poorly conceived, written, and produced but memorable none the less.
guys, maybe it's just me, but does patrick read as a bit…slow to anyone else? like… really slow? think about it…
STFU you politically correct idiots.
I kindly suggest we all use our time more wisely and find something to do other than critiquing animated panda commercials.
Let's go cure cancer or something.
On behalf of the universe, I thank you. :)
I said the v. same thing to my husband. I was mortified and simply said that this wasn't going to end well. Regardless, they also hosted the pre-game show and top that off with a bunch of commercials - they must've dropped at least 15 million. They really aren't geared toward a wide enough market to make all that money worthwhile I'd think.
BTW, last year that had horribly panned commercials as well…
DLR: On behalf of my little corner of the universe, don't speak for it.
me again…
Thanks for your feedback to my post.
Somebody said that pandas are endangered because bamboo is not plentiful enough. that is not the case. Bamboo is one of, if not THE fastest growing root/plant. Anyway, the two biggest reasons why pandas are endangered are 1) the female is only fertile for a few days during the year and the man hasn't mastered the art of mating with her during that time and 2) human expansion. it's ok to cut down bamboo to build houses. it will grow back. the problem is that humans laid down houses and roads over the paths used my pandas to migrate - to find mates and food. pandas "trapped" in the same region begin to interbreed and damage the genetic makeup of their offspring.
now, back to the funny commercial. yes, i said funny because i thought it was. the language they were speaking is known as 'engrish' go to http://www.engrish.com for more samples.
i guess i could see being offended if you were asian or something. i was a panda for halloween and one girl actually said my outfit was culturally insenstive. the problem with her argument is that she was dressed like a hooker.
thanks :-)
I think Patrick rocks.
Patrick is indeed quite rockin.
