AMERICAN WOMEN INCREASINGLY SELF-LOATHING "… according to a report published Monday by the nonprofit women's organization YWCA, our ceaseless pursuit of perfection is more toxic to American women and girls than ever. … Eighty percent of women say they're unhappy with their appearance, and 67% of women ages 25 to 45 are trying to shed pounds — though 53% of those women are already at a healthy weight. The report also cited a study in which 69% of the respondents (18 and older) said they were in favor of plastic surgery — a 7% increase from 2006."

Nope, it's not another southern thing. Up here in igloo land (read Canada) more and more women are getting boob jobs and etc. There are even contests in bars for women to win a free boob job. Oh lawdy!

As a trainer I see this in action all the time. I have yet to meet a woman totally satisfied with her body - most have at least something they want to work (butt, abs, inner thighs), and a good percentage of these women are within a healthy weight.
And I see plenty of boob job/lipoed women in Kansas, but I saw even more in Dallas. That may be the boob job mecca of the US.

I wouldn't mind having a little work done. though I don't want general anesthesia. That does not make me self loathing

Since obesity is the number one health risk to Americans it's good to know that at least half had to lose weight and knew it.

Crazy idea: focus on FITNESS and HEALTH instead of weight. Reducing one's body fat percentage to a healthy range (18-24% is ideal, up to 30% is acceptable) really beats the hell out of these diets that make you lose 2 lbs of fat and 7 lbs of muscle in one week, setting you up for fat gain in the near future.

I've always had a definite goal weight that I've never quite reached and I don't really care that I'll probably never reach it (100 lbs + 5 lbs for every inch above 60 in). Last year when I was active, my BMI was 24 (25 = overweight) and I had a 27 inch waist at 5'8". My BMI is the same now and my waist isn't quite so small now that I'm lazy.

Ugh. Tangerine. IT'S NOT THE NUMBER ONE HEALTH RISK.

People who are otherwise healthy but weigh "too much" don't drop dead from their weight.

I understand that it - like many otherwise bening conditions - can exacerbate other problems but my god, it's not THE PROBLEM. It's just one of the few health-related factors you can actually BLAME SOMEONE for, like smoking or drinking too much, and for some reason people reeeeeally enjoy placing blame.

Wow… I got TWO chips on my shoulder this week.

OK..re:the oversharing. I grew up going to 2 churches that opposed each other's philosophies, and my father is a bipolar ex-preacher with an unnatural obsession with "eat less exercise more."

There hags, I hope that explains things a little.
