'TOWELHEAD' TITLE WILL REMAIN "An Islamic civil rights and advocacy group has asked Warner Bros. to change the title of its upcoming film 'Towelhead,' saying 'the word is commonly used in a derogatory manner against people of the Muslim faith or Arab origin.' The studio said it plans to keep things as it is and stand by the filmmakers, who chose the title to point out racial stereotypes, though it added, 'We apologize for any offense that is caused by the title.' 'Towelhead,' directed by Alan Ball and adapted for the screen by Alicia Erian from her novel of the same name, looks at the life of a 13-year-old Lebanese-American girl in the early '90s."

How about this outrage - the title role is played by a girl who was born in Pasadena, California and is of German, Scottish, Mexican, and East Indian ancestry.

i hate the term "Towelhead." it's so racist and ignorant. I've been called that by rednecks and I don't appreciate Hollywood using the word Towelhead, to encourage ignorant racist assholes to use the word.

Enh. If Denzel can play Kenneth Branagh's brother (or was it cousin, who knows they all call each other cousin in those things) then that girl can play someone of a different race too. It's not like she is automatically racist simply because her role empathizes with a different race.

How about Rory, "I need the money Tom," Devaney an Irish Catholic IRA thug played by Messr. Pitt - he's Baptist for the love of Jesus Mary and Joseph. Evidently sar - casm is dead along with irony, satire et. al.

I learned how to deal with name callers as a child, "sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me," maybe we all need remedial kindergarten, which evidently translates as "child garden" - 1852, from Ger., lit. "children's garden," from Kinder "children" (pl. of Kind "child") + Garten "garden" (see yard (1)). Coined 1840 by Friedrich Fröbel (1782-1852) in ref. to his method of developing intelligence in young children, the first one in Eng. established 1850 by Johannes Ronge, Ger. Catholic priest. Taken into Eng. untranslated, where other nations that borrowed the institution nativized the name (cf. Dan. börnehave, Modern Heb. gan yeladim, lit. "garden of children").

Isn't the point of that movie about racism and sexual obsession? The title would make sense, then. I wonder what would happen if a black director came out with a movie titled "N*gger"?

In other news, this movie is called "Nothing is Private" on IMDb now.

OK OK I didn't pick up the sarcasm.

Brad Pitt is Baptist???

Actually that would explain the sense of entitlement, what with the fancypants hobbies and such. Oh wait no. That comes from the craploads of money…

Sar, I have to apologize, evidently sarcasm is undetectable by some people, most notably those with Ausberger's and other autism spectrum disorders.

It usually just confuses them since most sarcasm one encounters in their daily life involve giving praise for misdeeds. Usually a "I'm so glad you took the last doughnut with out asking me if I wanted to split it" kind of thing.

Thanks I think? Did you just call me autistic?

Now I'll never know whether you're being sarcastic, AND I have to make a doctors appointment.

Isn't Alan Ball the genius behind Six Feet Under? That was a very progressive show on HBO. I doubt Towelhead will be offensive if he's behind the project.

"Asperger"

I agree with the sticks and stones things to a large degree, but i don't think it should absolve people of their social responsibilities toward each other. In general I think it would be nice if people weren't malicious little butt nuggets to each other.
