Fashion Week Is Still Going On

Things got uncomfortable at Fashion Week when some crazies showed up to protest Dennis Basso's show, which features clothes made from real fur. We're all for making Anna Wintour feel uncomfortable, but anyone who is comfortable dragging around a skinned animal for a few hours creeps us out.

Put that pet on a spit and throw it on the barbie - I'll go get some Stubbs.

On a serious note, is Whitney going to Isaac Mizrahi's show? If not, could she? I need to live vicariously through her.

    dear PETA,
thanks for bringing one of the animals that YOU killed to fashion week. now please go home, i'm sure there are plenty of cats and dogs waiting for you to kill them there.

    Good for them!

Deimos, get your head out of your ass. Do you have ANY IDEA what goes into a fur coat? Speaks volumes for anyone who places bullshit "fashion week" over life and cruelty. Holy shit is America pathetic.

Who placed fashion week over life? Deimos simply pointed out the hypocricy in carrying around a skinned, dead animal when you are protesting killing and skinning animals. Maybe you should read carefully before you accuse someone of having their head up their ass, lest you prove your head is in the self-same location.

    Right.

Like THEY are the ones that slaughtered that animal. That animal at least did not die in vain. It was killed for a coat BUT at least is being used for educational purposes. PETA did not skin that animal, furriers did. Duh!

I DID read her response. I stand behind my original post.

Is that a dog? Who wears dog fur? they should have skinned a chinchilla or something.

PETA kills hundreds of animals, LOOK IT UP! that is not a mink or a chinchilla, it's a fucking dog or cat. i've never heard of anyone wearing a dog skin coat so what is the point of carrying around a skinned dog? don't get mad at me for pointing out that your little PETA group consists of a bunch of hypocrites.

I quote: "Speaks volumes for anyone who places bullshit “fashion week” over life and cruelty."

That was responding to Deimos' post which, correctly or not, complained about the hypocricy of PETA. Deimos did not say fashion week was more important than the animals - that wasn't touched upon at all. Your post was at best misguided and at worst the indiscriminate insults of an extremist. You can stand beind your original post, but you are foolish to do so. Instead you should say, "sorry I personalized this issue. I feel X and this is why…"

I have no problem with people disagreeing - I think it is good and leads people to the "right" answer. But I have a huge problem with people putting words in other people's mouths, or arguing different points. No headway is ever made. It is now my turn to get off my soapbox - and convert it to a sweet as car for a derby.

Hey Peta, you look up your facts. Specifically, look at the name of the poster. I haven't talked about what the animal is or isn't. Which is my problem with you - you suffer from a fatal case of cursory reading followed up by baseless accusations and villifications. Figure out what you are talking about and to whom you are talking before shooting your mouth off. Unless your point is to look like an idiot. In which case, success.

there is no way in hell that is a coyote, it's to small. it may be a fox but i doubt it. PETA has alot of nerve running around with that sign when they use donations from people like you to murder hundreds of animals. if you're for animal rights that's fine, i'm an avid animal lover myself, but don't stand behind a group that's know for killing animals. they're no better than furriers. they try to justify their killing of animals by hiding behind the bullshit logic of their crazed leader.

    No. 16 Hot Dog says:

Um, PETA's all about tastless (pardon the pun) shock tactics, so none of this is surprising. However, perhaps as deimos has, I have clicked on the link that says "PETA kills animals!" What I found was a spreadsheet of animals that entered their facilities, many of which ended up being euthanized. As a life-long vegetarian, animal rescuer, and non-idiot, I don't think this was very strong proof that PETA's out there indescriminately killing animals. Of course, I am willing to hear other opinions and weigh additional evidence.

if that isn't hypocritical then nothing is.

furriers don't kill indiscriminatly either, they only kill animals with soft fur thus making PETA no better than furriers.

    No. 18 Hot Dog says:

Right, deimos, I've read those websites. My question is, WHY did they euthanize the animals? Since the websites only show numbers of animals that came in the doors and what eventually happened to them, there is no saying whether they were injured/sick/unsaveable, etc., nor why they were euthanized. Is there anywhere in the propoganda that says that PETA was killing them for… fun? Financial windfall? The hell of it? That was my question.

A few years back, while I was in grad school, someone brought me a bird that had been mauled by a cat. It had severe injuries, largely to the head/wings, and was barely alive. Since I was working in a lab with veterinary drugs, I did the humane thing, and euthanized it. Point being, stories aren't as simple as a black-and-white number on a page.

Although I don't have a problem with fur (it's fabulous and it's certainly more environmentally friendly than any synthetic crap people can create), I do have a problem with how the animals can be treated.

My cousins lives in Michigan and everyone there hunts. When they kill deer (for food, fur, and to keep the population under control), they kill it as quickly as possible. Even those gun-toting men who keep whisky in a flask when they hunt say that it's not right or dignified to the animal to make it suffer unnecissarily.

…on a different note, Whitney you MUST attend Isaac Mizrahi’s show. I heart him.

    1. Lisa, your really way off base and don't know what you are talking about.

    2. I am not a peta member, I just think it's great they protested a pro-fur event with the other side of the industry. Case-closed.

    3. Peta may euthanize when they see fit. I do too. Humans should too. You wouldn't put your dog down? It's most humane, in a very inhumane and animal-cruel world. Thank you, Hot Dog, for seeing this

If you eat mean or wear leather, you may as well be wearing fur, too….

    No. 21 deimos says:

well seeing as how most shelters and rescue people can adopt out at least half of their animals i'd say PETA is killing them for the hell of it. they make 30 million a year so it's not a financial thing for them. there's really no logical reason i can think of for killing 97% of the animals that come into your care.

Honestly Peta, do you not understand that the name goes ABOVE the post?

    1) YOU are the one who doesn't know what you are talking about. At no point have I said anything about PETA or what the animal may nor may not have been (except my first post with a joke). What am I "off base" about? The fact that you told me it was a fox or coyote, when, and this is the important part you are missing, I never said what the animal was and I then called you out on it? Please, off base about what? Unsupported accusations mean nothing.

    2) Who called you a PETA member?

So everyone who eats meat and wears leather should also wear fur? The leather and fur industries aren't different vis a vis cruelty? Well, fuck, then maybe I will start wearing fur. (sarcasm) You are really doing a disservice to your cause.

Just admit you made a mistake when putting words in my mouth. You were clearly talking about Deimos' post when you replied @ 12. You clearly accused Deimos of putting fashion above cruelty to animals (when she only spoke of hypocricy). Just suck it up and admit you flew off the handle without reading or understanding what people were saying. No one will hold it against you. Look at Deimos and Hot Dog - disagreeing in a coherent and interesting manner. I suggest you do the same.

I used to live in Norfolk, VA (PETA headquarters) and every year the local radio station (99X fm) would hold the "Annual 99X PETA Fishing Tournament". They would hold this tournament just outside the HQ doors of the PETA building (it's located right on the water). Hysterical. I don't know if it was a catch and release sort of thing, but it pissed off the PETA folks so that was fun to watch.
