420weedday

If you love marijuana, you know what day Sunday is: Hitler's birthday, the anniversary of the Columbine massacre and, for some unspecified reason that might have to do with high school kids in the 70s, weed celebration day. Marketing people, omniscient tumors that they are, know also, and they're exploiting the hell out of it, even though recreational marijuana use is illegal nationwide!

A comic documentary, “Super High Me,” the new “Harold and Kumar” release and the mockumentary “Totally Baked” all have marketing and advertising schemes linked to April 20.

Why the hell Frito-Lay, maker of Funyuns and Doritos, is missing out on this golden opportunity to push product, we have no idea.

Well, I already celebrate Stalin's birthday after a fashion, being that I share it with him. So I'm already screwed on that count. Also, please don't remind potheads that it's Hitler's birthday unless you want to hear "Maaaan, if Hitler just got high. . . dude, there'd be a lot more Jews around. Just sayin'. . . " or some other wonderfully insightful bit of commentary.

I don't remember any thing from the 70s about a pot-4/20 connection but I WAS kind of glazey back then.

The first I every heard of the pot-4/20 connection was from one of my kids. I assumed it was from the 90s.

    What do I know?

It was (is?) police code. Like 311 got their name from the one for public nudity, a 420 was marijuana use. According to counterculture icon Paul Krassner:

"At 4:20 each afternoon I went to the council at Hemp Hall. There are different beliefs about the origin of 4:20 as a counter cultural icon. One theory is that 420 is the police code for a pot bust. Another is that there are 420 ingredients in marijuana."

Admittedly, I smoke a moderate amount and I really fucking hate stoner culture.

Toots would like to point out that she is very much looking forward to Sunday, as she just procured her (high-grade, natch) supplies for the festivities of…sitting around and watching Bravo…

    YESSSSSSS.

Ok so here is my theory, american cancer society has "national smoke out day" every year to promote quitting smoking. One year it was on 4/20 and stoners took it literally and the rest is history. Then again what do I know?

I also think 4/20 is for amateurs.

What a wonderful way the US government has found to get people to incriminate themselves!
Come up to Canada and smoke a j any day of the year without fear of getting busted.

Frowny McB = I, too, share Stalin's bday… and despise stoner culture. After all, how many drunks are held up in high esteem?

Hey Cord- thanks for pointing out Hitlers birthday. I've always been given shit ("you're such a nazi") just because I happened to retain that small piece of information.

So this got me to pondering.

I called up the stoneriest person I know and said that I was wondering what started the 4/20 stuff.

    I shared with them the cop theory posed by Frowney McBeard, like the 5150 is for crazys, and maybe 420 was for a pot bust;

Then we all got a BIG laugh out of Stoner conspiracy's thought about the American Cancer Society's Great American Smoke Out day, which is usually in October, by the way.

They said, in true stoner style, that they thought it referred to a time. That at 4:20 am you get up for a wake and bake. And then at 4:20 pm you are off work, so obviously, there you go.

Then they wanted to know if I had cooked dinner and what was it, because they had the munchies.

I fed them. It was the least I could do.
