Everything sucks now! You know it and I know it, and now we have some proof.
According to the American Film Institute, of the top 100 films in the top ten genres – Mystery, Courtroom Drama, Romantic Comedy, etc – only 18 were made after 1989. And five of those 18 are animated movies, which owe a lot of their magic to recent advances in technology and offshoring.

I can't believe they included Titanic on that list. Ick.
I was very pleased to see Harvey, though. Great, great movie.
where's tombstone?
You know what else is missing from that list?
Films with notable female lead roles.
deimos…get out of my head before I start charging rent. I took one look at the western list and was like "hello? Tombstone? Young Guns? What the hell?" Oh and how can they have 2 Godfather movies on the Gangster list, but no Casino? Boo. Just, boo.
Ooohgou, you're so right it's not funny. NONE of these movies (except for Bonnie and Clyde) have:
-two females
-who talk to each other
-about something other than a man
I call BULLSHIT on this list.
That's because women aren't interesting.
Elspeth- Agreed. This list is only proof that you shouldn't let AFI make your film decisions for you.
i also agree this this is bullshit. where's the Departed?
I really enjoyed the AFI special last night…maybe I'm alone in this.
This is entirely debateable guys but the following have female leads:
Cat Ballou 1965
McCabe and Mrs. Miller 1971
National Velvet 1944
Alien 1979
Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991
Bull Durham 1988
Miracle on 34th Street 1947
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 1937
Beauty and the Beast 1991
Cinderella 1950
The Wizard of Oz 1939
um…whene did A Clockwork Orange become sci fi? i know its messed up and its one of my favorite movies.but there is nothing sci fi about it. its set at the time in present day europe. just because they wear weird cloths doesnt make it sci fi.
With as expensive as it is to go watch a movie and eat popcorn now a'days, I wouldn't waste my time on drivel like Zohan.
Jerry f-ing Maguire, one of the ten best sports movies?!?!?! Bullshit! Hell, Major League is a better sports movie than Jerry Maguire!!
And ITA about Tombstone. Best Western I've ever seen. Also, you can't have a mystery list and leave out one of Hitchcock's best - Psycho!
What happened to the foreign and independent genres? Yojimbo? Kafka? L.O.P.'s Hamlet? Trainspotting? Orlando? (Definite female lead there.)
And no Ratatouille for animation?
No. You cannot placate me with The Philadelphia Story, Lawrence of Arabia, Vertigo, It Happened One Night, and Blue Velvet. Those are givens.
But, I can appreciate Shrek 3's parody of Snow White.
