Really Hoping He's Welcome at Olive Garden in Times Square

A request by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to lay a wreath at Ground Zero has been denied "on security grounds" by the New York City police. This pointed rejection has repercussions for American filmmaker Oliver Stone, who plans to make a documentary about the head of state: Ahmadinejad is now insisting that Stone come to Iran to interview him, and soon.
On Wednesday, Ahmadinejad's arts adviser said Stone should come to correct the"image of Iranian culture which is in contradiction of current realities."
Ahmadinejad, who will arrive in New York Sunday to address the United Nations, says that he is shocked by the refusal, especially considering 9/11 was a hoax, just like the Holocaust.

aaaawkward
Hoax or not, far too many people lost their lives in both cases. I'm over conspiracy theorists and their beliefs on everything bad that happens in the world. Not saying he's a conspiracy theorists, but one of my good friends adimately (sp?) believes 9/11 was the U.S. governments doing. I also believe, if he wants to lay a wreath, even if its for the wrong reason, who the eff cares? Let him hang the wreath. (Said in a Marie Antionette "Let them eat cake" kind of way.)
I just noticed… He looks a bit like Steve Carrol (sp?), no?
This is the equivalent of Tim McVeigh laying a wreath on the Federal Building site in Oklahoma City.
et: that's not a valid comparison. he's a dispicable man with horribly wrong beliefs, but let's not blur things anymore than they have been blurred already. the kind of thinking you laid out brought us in to one ill-gotten war. let's try to think a least half rationally before resorting to the type of vitriol that calls for another.
I have nothing good to say about this ass-hole but if he went to ground zero, I suspect the workers would fill the hole in pretty fast, leave his head out in the open and have a game of kick ball.
let him lay the wreath. I'm mean, by the rationale of "bad people shouldn't be there" then most of U.S. media shouldn't be around the World Trade Centers.
You guys do realize he'd use any sort of visit as an opportunity to level his own special brand of denial/vitriol at the U.S. in a well-organized PR coup?
Yes, kind of the way Bush and Guiliani use their photos in their own campaigns. Iran has a growing middle class and I believe that this Ahmadinejad won't be around much longer. I hope. Gulp.
I love reading the commentary here because it is generally witty and entertaining, and at times thought provoking. William, thank you for making that point! You speak the truth.
Personally, I think that Ahmadinejad is playing a very smart game of PR mind-f***, putting NYC in a very awkward position.
And Maria, my father is Iranian, and when he speaks of the future he talks about hope that the younger generations will initiate major changes.
Ahmadinejad was part of the younger generation in 1979 that assisted the Ayatollah in overthrowing the Peacock Throne - he helped bring in the oppressive fundamentalism that created contemporary Iran.
There was a lot of hope several years ago for an increasingly liberal Iranian government - but recent elections have kinda killed that hope.
I hope things change soon. Iran deserves so much better than that putz.
william_crown, my darling, oh how I've missed you. If I promise to keep on missing you, will you get the fuck off my back?
President of Iran Ahmadinejad is Banned from 9/11 Ground Zero NY
The Iranian President is scheduled to be speaking to the UN and there has been a lot of talk about his coming visit. On the right, they are screaming for all kind of things. Yesterday on the radio I heard them call for a public lynching, well not really. But….it could get there if the sentiment in this country continues!

Say what you want about the guy, but the one thing he's good at is PR. This whole stunt is a win - win thing for him no matter what.
This denial by the US totally wins him points in his country. The poor little misunderstood president is trying to play nice and the big mean US (aka: white devil) is telling him he can't pay tribute to dead people. That's going to make the Iranians hate us even more.
If he got to go through with it, he would spin some sort of web to not only his people, but other Muslim countries about how he is trying to reach out to us; thereby making him look like sweet ol' Uncle Mamhoud.
He's a very interesting character. He's an Arab man ruling a Persian country which makes him very popular to a lot of people thereby able to perhaps broaden his scope of influence.
I agree, Blah. That's exactly what I meant by PR coup.
