Taking a Stand

The Republicans are right: These goddamn celebrities just will not leave politics alone and go be celebrities! Look at this frickin' Alaskan governor, for instance, prancing about the pages of Vogue in ridiculously expensive winter wear. Is she for real? Earth to governor: You're a politician, lady, not Cindy Crawford!

See, this is exactly why I'm voting for McCain. Because he has made it well known that he is sick and tired of this horseshit. He's ready to take a stand against the ridiculous, flashy dog-and-pony show politics has…wait, what? What? Oh, for fuck's sake.

One more after the jump.

Cord, let's be honest, if this were Michelle, you would talk about how classy she is despite frigid temperatures. I like Michelle and will likely vote for Obama (I don't want to go back to Iraq anymore than people want us to go), but lets be fair here.

It's part of the political game. It's frustrating that Sarah Palin is in it because it just shows McCain's hypocisy. His half-ass disses about Obama being a celebrity can be thrown back his way.

Who cares about a beauty pageant 30 years ago, or a magazine photo for a story highlighting strong successful women?

Maybe not the most accomplished choice out there, but certainly no less than Obama - and no having a Harvard degree doesn't automatically qualify him. Not quite so sure what else he's put on the board that makes him president worthy. Better an inexperienced VP than an inexperienced president who gets into office for giving moving speeches.
And what a speech it was the other night, will be interesting to seem him articulate how he'll get some of the things done. Anyway, America is so entranced with this guy that I hope he is all you want him to be, it he gets in. Reality check is that this is politics and both sides have armies of spin doctors doing everything they can to control image. Okay. Here are my thoughts, for what they're worth:

We all know that she's been governor less than two years, was mayor of a town with a population smaller than South Amboy in New Jersey, has no foreign policy experience, and had met McCain only ONE TIME BEFORE HE CALLED HER FIVE DAYS BEFORE ANNOUNCING HER SELECTION AS HIS RUNNING MATE. She's not a firm believer in climate change, is anti-abortion (even in cases of rape or incest), and supports teaching creationism in public schools.

We also all know that she's a former beauty queen, high school sports star, and former television sportscaster. She has a picture-perfect, white, attractive, two-parent, Christian, American family with quirky first names most celebrities would kill for. She likes to hunt and fish and has been a lifelong NRA member. Her husband looks a little like Tim McGraw and is a three-time "Iron Dog" snowmobile race champion. They own a commercial fishing operation, just like the kind you see on those dramatic cable channel "dangerous job" shows.

Which of course means that she'll be wildly popular among the very same people who voted for George W. Bush because he seemed like the kind of guy you'd like to have a beer with. She's a babe. He's hot. The kids are SO CUTE! They love Jesus and guns and four-wheel drive.

It's all about the image. NOTHING MORE.

And the thought of her taking charge of the country in the event of the sudden demise of McCain (he's 72, she's 44) scares the shit out of me. Entirely.

Hi paperback_writer,

Everytime I see Sarah Palin on my t.v. I'm going to sing "Papa Don't Preach-I'm Keeping My Baby…"

I'm glad Sarah's daughter had that….choice.

I would like to see everyone make "choices" that they can live with. You can't make a "choice" if you don't have options.

My take on today's revelations?

If Sarah knew that her daughter was pregnant,

AND she knew that the pregnancy would certainly become public knowledge,

AND she knew that reaction to this could be devastating to her family — and most of all, to her own daughter carrying an unplanned child —

AND fully knows that her daughter (along with her own five month-old baby with Down's Syndrome)needs her attention, love, and support

AND is fully aware of the ruthless glare of a 24/7 media blitz in which NOTHING is off the table for criticism and commentary that won't leave them any privacy…

WHY THE HELL IS SHE (or any parent, male or female) NOW PUTTING ALL THIS ON THE BACK BURNER WHILE SHE RUNS FOR THE SECOND HIGHEST POLITICAL OFFICE IN THE NATION?

I am so freakin' amazed at this.

And there is MUCH, MUCH MORE to follow.

Trust.

Remember when we were in the 5th grade?
And twice a week, we played kick ball for P.E.?

And you for SOME reason, (you're being humble now, you were a kick-ass athelete in the 5th grade)you always got picked to be Team Captain?

And then you would pick children from your class to be on your team.

You KNEW who had the heart. You knew who would go the distance, and you knew who would play like their life depended on it.

So this week, you're not feeling up to it. You have a cold, or you are just feeling hormonal, and you don't know what that was just yet.

You just want this kick ball game to be over. And you are feeling a little cantankerous.

So you pick some people who NEVER get picked first. You pick the kids that lent you a nickel when you were short on change in the lunch line. You pick that boy who everybody picks on and you are sick of it.

This damn game will be over soon, and we will all be back in class. THANK GOD.

That's all I'm saying.

Who knows……one day a one legged, left wing, lesbian latino type might become President of the Land of the Free…all you've got to do is close your eyes ,click your heels and repeat after me…
theres no place like home.
This might be a bit difficult, the clicking bit that is, if you only have one leg….but you've just got to believe.

I woke up with something else to ponder:

Aren't the same people who are now inexplicably rallying around Governor Palin as exemplifying "real families with challenges" the same ones who blasted the movie "Juno" for "glorifying" teen pregnancy?

Oh, and just wait… it's gonna get even more interesting today with discussion of something called the Alaska Independence Party, whose motto is "Alaska First — Always First".

It never ceases to boggle my mind at the number of people who envy others (for what they perceive someone else has and they don't). Forget all the other stuff, focus on her abilities and skills to represent the nation. Maybe the mirror is a little too glaring? Isn't that the norm these days? a husband who drank and drove, a teenage pregant daughter etcetc. Why is everyone so shocked? lol … Sarah is the perfect example of the "norm" these days.

No, thedomestcigoddess, she's not normal.

Not by a long shot.

Not in my family.

Not among my friends and co-workers.

And no, I'm not envious of Sarah Palin, John McCain, or Laura Bush.

Or you.

I'm angry that people like you can so easily overlook hypocrisy and dismiss the relationships between what candidates SAY and what they DO, who ask no questions and want everything explained to them in simple terms.

I'm annoyed at people like you who throw criticism of public figures back at the commentors and use petty insults with the words "jealousy" or "envy", belittling the people who have the guts to stand up and call bullshit on the farce that passes for "American patriotism" today.

Things are changing.
