Pretty Is As Pretty Does

Beyonce's January cover of Elle magazine reveals some "Whaaaat?" stories about her past, including a lovely gem courtesy of her mother, Tina Knowles.

You see, B was acting "like a diva" during a promotional appearance, so Tina openly admitted to slapping her daughter across the face: "My husband came up and said, 'Tina! She's got the No. 1 record on the radio!' I said, 'I don’t care!' I taught my girls to pick up their own suitcase. Pretty is as pretty does. Like my mother said, 'You got to be cute on the inside.'"

This entire story makes us uncomfortable, and it's probably not something one ought to share in a national publication, but that's just us.

(And, by the way, we plan on getting "You got to be cute on the inside" crocheted on a pillow.)

Yeah, well MY mom thinks Beyonce's Mom is crazy and selfish for being her daughter's designer. As she put it: "That girl is always on the worst dressed list. At what point do you throw in the towel?"

Mmmkay, I totally agree here. I don't understand what picking up your own suitcases has to do with pretty is as pretty does. I never understood stupid is as stupid does, for that matter. And how can you be cute on the inside? I don't like Tina Knowles.

I don't like Tina Knowles either, but there are quite a few celebrities out there whose mothers should have slapped them instead of inabling them. Or riding their coat-tails.

Luz, if you don't know how to be cute on the inside, then you're beyond hope. How hard is it to understand that B's mom wants her to be polite and humble?

Their family relationship is SUPER weird. Yeah, black mommas (<–also a black momma, so any generalizations I make ARE valid/politically correct) are able and have the right to 'assault' their adult children wherever and whenever they want ("Boy!!! I'mma whoop yo' ass!!!", etc.,) but that whole Tina/Beyonce/Funny-looking dad relationship is a little to Freudian for me! Beyonce is spoiled, ignorant (the way she speaks and the stuff she speaks about is like "Huh? Did she really say that???") and OVERRATED!!!
I'm also sick of hearing about Rihanna and Beyonce–so what??? There are other HOT singers out–give them some holla'! Shoot!!!

I've heard of pretty on the inside, I've never heard cute. I just meant it sounded weird, a little off, much like the overall impression I have of Beyonce. And if she wanted her daughter to be polite and humble, I would say she failed.

Shouldn't she also be concerned as a momma that her daughter married Jay-Z? I mean, I'm concerned for Beyonce and I don't even know her.

Darkprincess, I totally agree (everything except the part about Rihanna - that mess coming out of her mouth should never be considered singing, I'd lean more towards a baby giraffe dying a la South Park). Black mothers don't care how old you are or how big you are, they will still put you in your place (I've learned this lesson the hard way, my mom's Black). My aunt (5'2") has three boys who are all over six feet tall and she tells them "I don't care how big you are, you keep talking out the side of your neck and I'll stand on a chair and whoop your azz!"

Cute on the inside? I think that is accomplished by regular colon cleansings. And bows. Lots of bows.

Maybe that's what people were trying to accomplish with the whole gerbil fetish. It all makes sense now…

I've been black for quite some time now; I have a black mother, two black grandmothers, four black aunts, one black sister and two black sisters-in-law.

I have NEVER seen or heard one of them physically or verbally abuse any child. I can count the number of times I was spanked as a child on one hand. I have never been struck anywhere but on my rear end and even that was only a couple of swats by hand. My sister and sisters-in-law don’t even spank; they use time-outs and restrictions for punishment and rewards for good behavior.

Darkprincess & Rainey, I don't doubt your experience; I'm just pointing out that not all black mothers are the same.

Dee and TangerineSpeedo: for the record, I agree that not all Black mothers spank their children. In fact, I wasn't spanked at all as a child, but my mom did slap me one time when I was 22 because I thought I was grown enough to tell her to mind her own business. I wasn't attempting to speak for all Black people in the world, just sharing my experience.

I saw a black woman in a grocery store once openly beating her child about the legs and back with a stick. He was all of about four and screaming in terror. BUT I don't agree she did it because she's black. She did it because she's uneducated trash who should have never spawned in the first place. I've seen white women with the same problem.

Luz, that sucks. I was raised in a household with no spanking and where my parents never cursed around us (well, my mom at least). I was pretty amazed when I heard my exboyfriend's mom, talking to me and him about her 15 year old daughter, saying she was acting like a "fucking slut." I don't get it. Why talk to/about your kids like that?
