9021-Oh, Christ

blackkid90210

Good news: The CW's new 90210 actually has a black character!

Bad news: Said black character is in Beverly Hills because he was adopted by a wealthy white family and given a "better life."

Click through for a full preview of the "cooler, sexier, more provocative" (and only slightly less racist) 90210.

Jessica Walter is the only thing that is going to be interesting on this show. (oh, and the teacher that "identifies" with his students? I'm thinking that's code for having sex with his students.)

Um, the original had a black character as well. A few of them. First there was the black family that moved in because they made money, then no one wanted them there. The son hung out with Steve a lot. Then there was the family that transfered much like this story (so they're ripping off their own storylines). And finally, the guy Andrea was supposed to go to prom with, but he got sick.

So they were allowed at West Beverly in the 90s as well, and in just as "slightly less racist" ways.

Why couldn't this character (what's his name? Token?) be the son of, say, a music mogul? That could have been more interesting and less cliched. Oh well…

Music mogul? You know what would have been more interersting and less cliched? Son of a successful plastic surgeon (it is Bev. Hills) or owner of a chain or organic food stores or an advertizing exec. Or hell, a daughter.

dude, brandon dated that black girl who was the daughter of the black couple that moved into beverly hills with money earned from their fried chicken and watermelon franchise.

it was so totally awesomely racist.

ok, it might have been ice cream or waffles, but it was still pretty ridonkulous. about as ridonkulous and brandon dating the mexican chick and going on dates at a taco stand.

and yes, i watched bh 90210 for all ten seasons. and yes, i almost had my black membership card revoked. and no, i'm not ashamed.

That's who I meant by the first one I mentioned. She was played by Vivica A Fox, wasn't she?

you know, kitchy, i almost wrote that the chick was played by vivica a. fox, but then i was wondering if that's because she's the only black B list actress from that era that i could think of.

    i think you're/we're right.

And don't forget DeShawn, the token black athlete in need of Brandon's intelligence in order to qualify for the team. College, but still.

Then there was the black girl that both Ross and Joey asked out, only to lose her when they started sharing bad stories about each other at dinner.

Oh wait. Sorry, wrong all-white cast.

Typical. I stopped watching the show after that episode where Brandon dated Vivica A. Fox. Why watch a show about people who would never be your friend or act like jerks if one of them dated you? I'm not a fan of Arron Spelling crapshows.

Ok in the year 2008, where we might have a black President for the first time, can't the series be more in tune with the times instead of taking a black character over two decades backwards? This is NOT Park Avenue of "Different Strokes." He-llo.

It was Vivica Fox that Brandon dated! In my mind, I kept picturing Hilary from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air….
