The Oscars Drives Us To Drink, Too

The New York Post is reporting that Nicole Kidman drank backstage at the Oscars:
Boozing backstage during the Oscarcast is a no-no. But if you’re pregnant Nicole Kidman it’s a yes-yes. She wanted white wine. She got it.
Which leads us to ask: If that were the case, why would the Post be the only news outlet reporting this? In an age where people notice if Miley Cyrus isn’t buckling her seatbelt, you mean to tell us that nobody saw Nicole drinking alcohol and did anything about it? And who would just hand a pregnant woman alcohol?
Oh, right. It’s Hollywood.
The Post: Today’s real champion of truth.

eh. a glass of wine isn’t going to cause her fetus to burst into flames or anything. as long as she’s not drinking everyday i think it’s ok to enjoy a glass every once in awhile, even doctors will tell you it’s ok.
I was served a glass of wine when I was pregnant, and in Australia (and eurpope) pregnant women aren’t told that they absolutely cannot drink while pregnant. It certainly isn’t the safest route but current Australian guidelines recommend pregnant women consume no more than seven standard drinks a week, and no more than two a day.
*europe*
every body is different, one glass now and then may not hurt some, but who knows what it can do others, why take the chance.
I never drank when sperminated. I worked at a daycare and one of the kids had fetal alcohol syndrome. He was such a sweet boy but had some problems. I just always thought of him whenever I was pregnant. I have friends who drank wine while pregnant and their kids are just fine. It was just my own thing.
Or maybe she isn’t really pregnant and the whole pregnancy was a publicity stunt. Her ex-husband pulled off a baby bump scam so why not Nicole.
..and wasn’t there a blind item recently about an actress who had “lost” a pregnancy.
one more..Why was she drinking in front of her recently rehabbed alcoholic husband anyway?
yeah, does he go around getting botoxed now that she has to lay off the needle? I don’t know, maybe he does.
I drank very, very rarely with my first one. At that time you were still advised to drink in moderation (she’s almost 9 now). With the 2 year old, I didn’t drink at all. It’s best to abstain, and really, how fucking hard is it to go without alcohol for 9 months? It’s selfish to risk the health of your baby so you can enjoy a glass of wine.
I love “sperminated” ! :-)
I had the occassional glass of wine while pregnant all four times. Doctor-approved.
For the record, the server can’t deny her the glass of wine anyway.
I don’t know if it’s different down there, but here, as a server, you can. Aside from being able to refuse service to anyone, you’re specifically allowed to refuse to serve pregnant women alcohol if you have qualms about it.
That’s true, there is the “we reserve the right to refuse service.”
But if you refuse on the basis of pregnancy around here, you’re probably going to lose your job. It’s a big opening to a lawsuit.
Where does one draw the line? Refuse to serve sushi to a pregnant woman because of the out-of-date recommmendations on it? Refuse to serve a pregnant woman frozen yogurt or soft-serve ice cream because of the listeria warning?
Sorry, bit of a soap box there. But I hate how pregnant women are judged on EVERYTHING they put into their body, or because they wear heels, etc. No one knows what their doctor approved or how often Nicole has a glass of wine.
Oh, it’s true. I mean, you’re also allowed to serve them if you don’t have issues. But here at least, any lawsuit launched on that basis would be insane.
I personally would never sue over it, but unless my server is getting the medical history of every customer and whether or not they’re in acceptable shape to allow alcohol, I’d sure as hell be making a complaint.
Although, just to play devil’s advocate, if any customer has a visually identifiable condition that could make it risky for them to consume alcohol, we would deny that customer service. We have lots of customers with known medical conditions who we either will not serve, or who are on strict limits. We can’t inquire about medical histories, but if a condition is visually identifiable, we can and do make decisions on that basis.
It’s still irresponsible to drink when you’re pregnant. Have some self-restraint and take care of yourself while you’re pregnant, or don’t get pregnant. FAS is the only completely preventable birth defect (for lack of a better word)and it’s just ignorant to risk it, no matter how small.
WHO’S GOING TO TELL NO? WHY DON’T WE OVER REACT.
Oh for fucks sake, calm down. An occasional glass of wine, especially after the first trimester, is fine. How many of you self-righteous teetotallers fed your infants formula? Do you think that stuff is okay? How many of you put chemical laden disposable diapers on their butts everyday? How many of you willfully mutilated your son’s genitalia in the name of “hygiene?” Fucking Americans.
Fucking AwShuckians.
somebody should tell awshucks that their point becomes void when they act like an asshole about it. i guess they didn’t read that almost everybody agreed that it’s ok to have a drink or two. fucking (insert whatever country awshucks is from here).
Someone lestf the soapbox out. We need to get that soap box put away. The tourists are abusing it again.

AwShucks:
Please look at this link: http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/hp-.....alc_e.html
This is the Government of Canada’s site.
It states:
“THERE IS NO SAFE AMOUNT OR SAFE TIME TO DRINK ALCOHOL DURING PREGNANCY
If you drink alcohol while you are pregnant, you are at risk of giving birth to a baby with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)”
And as others pointed out, it is possible to have a difference of opinion and to state your points, without coming across as judgmental as you are accusing me of being. I have the facts to back up my statement, where are yours?
Also, I would just like to point out, that although you may possibly make some valid points, none of those lead to a condition as devastating as FASD. Which is completely preventable simply by abstaining from alcohol for nine months.
I went well over a year and a half, even skipping a drink on my 30th birthday, because I was pregnant and then breastfeeding.
i think both sides have a good point. my sister’s doctor told her a glass of wine every week wouldn’t hurt the baby so i didn’t have a problem with it; after all, it was her doctor telling her that. when i get pregnant i’m not going to drink because that’s just my personal choice. i think what it all boils down to is what the mother and father of the fetus think is best. there are arguments for both sides that are valid so why not call it what it is, a personal choice.
deimos, the problem is that many doctors are of the opinion that drinking in moderation is safe. However, that is an outdated thought, and it has now been medically proven that they don’t know exactly how much alcohol is safe. When I was pregnant 9 years ago, I was told small amounts wouldn’t be harmful. With the most recent pregnancy, I was still told that by some ill-informed books, articles, etc. However, the official thinking is now that no amount at any time is safe, because they just don’t know how much is too much. So why risk it? I don’t agree that this is a personal choice- it affects another being other than yourself, so err on the side of caution.
i understand where you coming from but my point is that for every study in the world there is another study that dis-proves it so it does boil down to what the parents think is best. my nephew is a perfectly healthy little guy with all his motor skills and he’s very vocal. my sister had a glass of wine every week when she was pregnant with him. i’m not going to drink while i’m pregnant because i have a MORAL problem with it. some people’s morals differ from mine. i have seen from personal experience that it’s not harmful to indulge in a glass of wine while pregnant. also, back in the day people drank while pregnant all the time, don’t you think there would be more fucked up people if it was that harmful? i know my mom drank while she was pregnant with me and my siblings and we all turned out fine. all anyone can do in this case is make a judgement based on their experience and their morals, that’s why i say it’s a personal choice.
AWSHUCKS mother was obviously wrestling whilst he/she was in the womb, and just can’t help but fight. You can just tell he/she wants to throw down over everything. Fucking, whatever crazy pro pregnancy fighting country, that bitch is from. Get your fight on.
My doctor actually told me I could drink a glass of wine about 3 times a week. I didn’t b/c I was really paranoid during my pregnancy b/c it was my first. I’m not saying with my next one I won’t but I was giving the option. That’s more about your own personal choice I think. I choice not to but I have lots of friends that did drink the occasional glass of wine when they were…….
I made my comment and then when back and read the other and I do like EsquaredMom thought “I don’t agree that this is a personal choice- it affects another being other than yourself” VERY GOOD POINT! Of course I’m a huge fan of EsquaredMom!!!!! :D she tickles me to no end…..
anyone heard Nicoles reps reply?
“But I have to tell you that Nicole Kidman most certainly did NOT drink white wine or any other alcoholic beverage backstage. She had water and lemon zinger tea. That’s it. I know, I was there with her I cannot remember that last time that Cindy Adams got anything right. She’s an idiot, and you can quote me”
Classic!
Do you really think a woman who has constantly spoken about her desire to have babies and who has miscarried before would have any alcohol? I kinda doubt it. I don’t know why so many columnists hate Nicole so much but they have to get over it. I think they are actually kinder to stepford Katie than they are to Nic
Aww, citmyway, how sweet! I have my own fan! Wait, should I be worried? You’re not going to turn into a stalker like me with, ummm… never mind. Nothing to see here. Go about your business.
I think that reps reply is on target, especially that comment about Cindy Adams. That was great.
Cindy may be getting a touch of that elder forgetful, befuddled thing.
Cindy needs and eye exam. I banking on it having been Tilda Swinton. They are both skinny, red-heads with sharpe noses that wore black.
I wouldn’t drink either, but that’s also because I only drink the hard stuff - no wine or beer for this girl. It’s strictly vodka or rum. My mom said she had 3 glasses of wine during her pregnancy. It’s not something I would feel comfortable doing, but a glass here is fine.
I don’t understand why doctors say sushi is a bad idea. As long as your sushi bar uses fresh fish, it should be fine. If they don’t then why eat there in the first place?
i don’t think you can’t eat sushi while preggers because of the high mercury levels in fish.
Of course she’s a huge fan esquared. You go around tickling city. I’d be a fan too. Two can play at that game. I need a fan, stat. Who wants to be tickled and where would you like to be tickled at?
juju, what does tickling city mean? Lay off the alcohol before you post! I’m sitting here giggling to myself as I think up varied explanations for tickling city.
Is it anything like whistling dixie?
When you all quit smoking your cigarettes I’ll stop drinking my 1/2 glass of wine with dinner once or twice a month and I won’t eat that hot dog when I get a craving. Not to stir the pot but 4000 chemicals to 1/2 a glass of red wine? Which is proven to be good for my blood pressure! What has cigarettes been proven to help in any way whatsoever? Or how about the countless women who get epidurals for the birth… nothing like knocking your baby up so it comes into the world all drugged up! Hey your first experience with life is being high YEAH!! Grow a backbone and have a med free birth your not the first person to give birth and you certainly won’t be the last. I’ve had 2 med free births and I’ll be soon having my 3rd.
Jen: my vagina hurts just thinking about it, you are a strong birther. But I thought epidurals medicated via spinal fluid - the baby doesn’t get the drug, no?
yes EsquaredMom I am a fan but not a stalker…..Where do you live? Can I have your #?
tee hee
Jen C: Yes,dear, but you are MISSING THE POINT. Do those things cause FASD? No? I am ignoring the cigarette comment because obviously if I am anti-drinking during pregnancy I am anti-smoking.
Lisa’s right, Jen. Epidurals are straight to the spinal fluid. Completely safe for baby.
I had 4 children completely unmedicated. Not because I am noble, but because I asked for meds too late into the process.
With my last child, I asked for the epidural in time, and I had a much better experience. I finally got it right.
