I would not go as far to call them genius since they are not in actuality, benefiting anyone but themselves. Society is certainly not getting anything positive out of Britney these days. If we are calling genius to anyone who makes themselves a good buck, then by that same token, Joe Francis would be deemed a genius.

hey, i live in bush's america. don't blame me for havings screwed up values (i love how i can blame everything on that tool bush). nobody in hollywood really ever benefited anyone but themselves but you could argue that stars like britney, marilyn, elizabeth taylor, errol flynn…they've always provided a sort of public service by making a spectacle of themselves and letting us live vicariously through them (wishing we could be as wild as flynn or taylor or even britney) or by letting us feel better about ourselves (who can't feel morally superior to britney …"yeah, she's rich but she's a drug-addled mess so my life must be better!" and they find ways of making themselves richer while imploding at the same time…that takes a sort of genius. i read somewhere that britney takes in about a million per month…the bitch doesn't work! that's a kind of genir there…
