Wrong Opinions

rupobspeech

Because unity, love and understanding is bad news for a bottom line that demands competition amongst segregated markets, The Wall Street Journal absolutely hated the enlightening, heartfelt, unprecedented speech Senator Barack Obama gave yesterday.

Barack Obama took the stage this morning to give what was billed as a "major speech on race." It was, of course, an attempt to rescue his campaign from the revelation that his so-called spiritual mentor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, espouses a virulently anti-American and antiwhite worldview called "black liberation theology."

Our first thought was that it was pretty low of Obama to exploit his (still living) grandmother in this way. Is it really necessary for the whole world to know about her private expressions of prejudice? Doesn't simple decency dictate that a public figure treat embarrassing facts about loved ones with discretion?

Obama was trying to accomplish something very specific by dragging his "white grandmother" into this political mess. He was trying to diminish Wright's hateful theology by implying that it too is a private matter.

One wonders, Is it their dollar sign eyes that make them so blind?

HUCKABEE: [Obama] made the point, and I think it’s a valid one, that you can’t hold the candidate responsible for everything that people around him may say or do. You just can’t. Whether it’s me, whether it’s Obama…anybody else. But he did distance himself from the very vitriolic statements.

Must say, I see their point…Obama needed to publicly recognise Wright's "hateful theology" (majorly embarassing for him!), but the way he did so (i.e. the grandmother) was inappropriate. Also a little like being hit over the head with a blunt object.

a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world That is not exploiting, and it's not "pretty low", it was a tender example of how, even our loved ones, even ourselves have to come to grips with the certainty of bigotry. The editor was clearing digging for anything that could remotely give a small minority of people, a reason to hate the speech. This must be one of 5 articles criticizing the speech. On nearly every other news outlet last night, the consensus was this was an epic speech.

Besides, and I hate to put it in these terms, but it's definitely not the first time a political candidate has used a relative as a marketing tool. Virtually every candidate since the dawn of time has styled and presented their relatives to the media for judgment. I don't even think that's what Obama was doing here. I think it was just the most honest way to answer a difficult question, as well as a kind of savvy way of addressing the issue without alienating voters. Well played, Obama.

Interesting since every time a political figure tries to keep his personal business private the truth still comes out. Spitzer, anyone? Not even remotely the same situation but that was a private matter.

He didn't want it out there but now it is and it's all over the news and every blog and entertainment show. The new Governor admitted to affairs even before he took office. Had he not then it would have come out later.

My long winded point is that he used the situation with his grandmother as an example he thought people could relate to. We all have someone in our family or a friend who has some predjudice.

My crazy grandmother carries a whistle because she thinks all men want to rape women. She grew up in a convent and that's what they were taught to believe. See, I used my grandmother.

If you're going to run for office people are going to look into your private life. They want to know who is sitting in the big chair. Not just the public person but the private person as well. He needs to get over that.

As someone in a liberal, white, female seminarian and a strong supporter of Obama, I feel like I have to interject about black theology. You cannot take bits and pieces of it and expect to understand the entire black experience. Most white people don't even realize that the theology espoused in their churches reflects a view of white males formed over a long period of time. All theology is formed in a specific time and place and reflects the experiencs of those writing it. The black experience in America is hard. Blacks have been discriminated against, enslaved, brutalized and still victims of racism. Black theology speaks to this experience because theology of white churches does not, just like feminist theology speaks to women's experience. There is a reason I can only be ordained in a few denominations. Also, the candidates should NOT be judged on religion. We are supposed to have separation of church and state!

I wonder if Obama really even gives a big hooha about church. I know he says he does but I think all politicians have to say that these days (for whatever reason). What if he's like the majority of people I know and just go to church to do something family-like with their kids on a Sunday morning and to meet and greet with their community. I'm "catholic" and I don't agree with 75% of what the pope says.

Not only do all of us have relatives who are, in some manner, a bit racist, we ourselves are too. Just saying you aren't racist because you have friends or a spouse who is a different race, or because you NEVER utter racist comments, does not mean you are completely free of bias/racism in your life. Obama was addressing the human aspect of racism, not the legal ramifications of expressing one's racism for the purpose of causing harm to another person. We can't Botox and fake-tan ourselves into achieving world peace, you know. Somebody's got to represent reality, and the rest of us have to be able to recognize it.

If that was a white man he would be forced to resign. He didn't address the issue at all just ran circles around it. No way anyone can be a part of a church 20 yrs and be good friends with the man (practically family) and not know. You know in private he agrees with the man. Racism is racism.
