Fight the Power

greatdepression

New York’s new tax breaks for film and television productions already have camera crews sprouting like Pinkberrys all over Manhattan, meaning this summer could be perfect for heckling actors until they punch us and we call our lawyer. (We’re back, baby!)

Of course, as is always the case, one man’s fortune is another man’s shit luck. Much as we despise Hollywood types, it’s terrible that they’re finding it harder and harder to get work.

That’s why we’re publishing the full-page ad the recently fired production crew of Ugly Betty took out in tomorrow’s Variety. We love New York and want her citizens to live well, but we’re always in for some righteous Schwarzenegger bashing.

To Whom it Should Concern
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Members of the State Senate and State Assembly, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the Los Angeles City Council, and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors:

We are writing to you because we just lost our jobs. We are the 300 plus members of the crew of the television show Ugly Betty. We were informed this Tuesday that the production of our show is moving to New York primarily because of the 35% tax incentives being offered by the state of New York. Instead of making good wages and paying our fair share of California state income tax, we will all be collecting Unemployment Benefits. In addition, we will certainly be cutting our spending back to the bone, which will not only cut back our sales tax contributions substantially, but it could end up costing the jobs of the people who provide services and products to us. Not only are these crew positions being lost; all of our local vendors are losing our business.

Our production buys: lumber, paint, wallpaper, cabinets, other building materials, office products, fabric, art supplies, computer equipment, food, beverages, flowers, film, makeup & hair products, wigs, insurance, jewelry, clothing, etc.

Our production rents: lighting equipment, sound equipment, video playback equipment, heavy machinery, office equipment, backdrops, costumes, furniture, scenery, props, soundstages, offices, parking facilities, cars, trucks, storage facilities, computers, camera equipment, grip equipment, editing equipment, drafting equipment, cell phones, computers, toilets, dumpsters, live plants, production trailers, tools, hardware, artwork, walkie talkies, etc.

Our production also uses the services of: dry cleaners, printers, location companies, Special Effects companies, utilities, caterers, payroll services, restaurants, security, Post Production Services, Clearance Houses, etc.

When we shoot on locations around Los Angeles we pay for permits; we pay homeowners & businesses for the use of their property, we hire police and fire department personnel, we pay for facility engineers, etc.

So, while the loss of our individual positions may be insignificant, the loss of this production is staggering. Now multiply this by all the other productions going to New York, New Mexico, Illinois, Louisiana, North Carolina and other states with incentives, not to mention Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Eastern Europe, etc. and the cost to the California state economy is monumental. We implore you to do everything in your power to level the playing field and bring our jobs back to California by enacting meaningful incentives to keep film and television production in our state.

Sincerely yours
The Crew of Ugly Betty

I don’t think they are going to far, they are exactly right. Governments have their heads so far up their asses the only way to make them pay attention to “the little people” is to make the recognized how much money you’re taking out of their own pocket. Only thing I would have done different is taken out more ads in more papers.

Good for them. Most of these people will move on to other shows, but who know how long it will take them to find another job. Their main point is valid. It’s not just 300 people losing their job. There is going to be a lot of businesses who are going to feel the pinch of this.

I’m not saying the Ugly Betty production company should stay because of that. They made a decision that will save them a lot of money, in the end it’s all about the money. California needs to step up or these won’t be the only jobs being lost. Lets face it, the entertainment industry brings in a ridicules amount of money to that state. They are going to have to give some back to make sure the money keeps flowing in.

there’s capitalism for you. money over people. good for the crew for making everyone aware of this. -however- if the damn show is set in new york, it should have always been filmed in new york.

I am in the business. Since the writers strike, myself, this town have NOT been the same. Now…. perhaps the sag strike. These are hard times. You failed to talk about Michigan. Here it is….40 percent incentives, across the board. That is huge. Are wonderful Governor has done zero.. He is rich and powerful , and truly does NOT care. Michigan cares about there people, they are so trying hard to get productions to film there. Actually, there’s alot of work going on … just not here! WHAT CAN WE DO???? I am trully sorry about this show leaving. I bet all the above the line people are leaving . If there is anything I can do , I’am there.

The ratings were already down a ton from last season, and no show did as well as the pilot, which was shot in NYC in the first place. I think the cheese ball green screens and bad VFX has ruined this show. Hopefully real NYC background and dumping all the bad editorial faking it and lame effects to cover the bad cuts will help this show.
