At Least His Writers Weren't Funny

carsface

"It is not nice to be a scab," said Jack London, addressing the Oakland Socialist Party Local in 1903. We think his words endure, but some empty people do not. Take an underfed Carson Daly, who is crossing picket lines to resume production on his late night talk show, Last Call With Carson Daly.

And because he's not content with just being dastardly, Daly is getting gimmicky, cheaply recruiting friends and family to join his scabby corps:

Knowing that he couldn’t come up with jokes himself, The Smoking Gun has obtained an email Daly sent to his friends, family and doctor New York…asking them call into a joke hotline.

You'll find the original e-mail after the jump, complete with an example of a terrible joke that would apparently make the cut and the suggestion that the message's recipients forward it to their funny friends, including Mom's "backeast family," Meat's "crew" and even "random peeps."

Sayeth London, "The scab is powerless under terrorism." Daly better hope Meat's crew is big.

As much as I hate to defend Carson, he's not a member of the WGA, which means he can't really be a scab. Scabs are technically the members who don't abide by the strike, like Ellen.

Besides, Carson has to cross picket lines. Lord knows his show would never survive an extended leave. How has it survived so far??

That's true, Kitchy. I didn't realize it was still on. It's hard becuase as much as people want to show solidarity, not everyone can. Carson probably isn't getting the same money as Jay Leno or Conan. Take back the, probably. He needs j-o-b to e-a-t. He's probably using the money for something besides food.

Is Ellen actually writing for her show? Or just performing?

Did David Letterman do all his own jokes during the last strike? Or did he attempt to collect help from friends and family too?

Ellen's adlibbing. But it takes up time that normally would be filled by writers, which makes her a scab.

I personally have no problem with it. But it is what defines her as having broken the strike. I also agree with deimos - the writers can't expect everyone to go jobless just to prove their point. That's cruel.

The View adlibs their "Views" I'm not sure if that's considered scabbing or not? I was just not to pick scabs.

Kitchy, Ellen is bound by ANOTHER contract with a different union where she has to continue working regardless of what the WGA did. I can't remember the name of the group now, but there are quite a few in Hollywood that couldn't support the WGA strike because of this other union and a clause that states they won't stop working during a strike. (I didn't realize she was part of the WGA.)

On another point, I have a friend who works as an assistant producer in Hollywood, and what happens to the crews is really sad. Many of them lose their homes and families when something like this happens because when the show stops producing, they all get laid off.

AA, I agree with you. I'm stating why the WGA has labeled her a scab. I think it's great that Ellen kept working, personally.

I like Ellen. And I get what the writers are doing…but in the meantime they are screwing everyone else. Kind of seems to defeat the purpose.

WGA is labeling anyone who walks the other way on the street a scab…all of it is kind of starting to get annoying. I just think strikes are like temper tantrums…I doubt the writers let their 2 year olds get away with crap like that.

Yeah, I was fully supportive of the WGA strike until they started requiring every single worker to walk off the job as well. I don't get how making the catering crew go without a paycheck for weeks on end is a good thing.

It's starting to make me hope that reality tv does take over and the writers can no longer find work anyway.

I swear, I am only going to watch the history channel from now on. Regular TV has sucked for some time (I'm looking at you SNL). Imagine how much worse it's going to be if this continues for a few more months!

In the meantime, I'll continue to feel sorry for Carson Daly. That tapeworm is taking it's toll on the guy. Big time. I miss the slightly cherubic Carson. He was hot.

Carson used to be an alchoholic. He is honestly not on drugs, he has just been sober for a few years. Similar to Chevy Chase, who was once addicted to coke, stopped, and then lost all his sense of humor.

    No. 24 LaborAtty says:

A scab is defined as a person who refuses to strike or to join a labor union or who takes over the job responsibilities of a striking worker. It has nothing to do with whether or not they belong to the striking union. In fact, it is a term usually used for a person who does NOT belong to the union but who takes the job of a striking worker. GET IT??? Carson Daly IS scabbing, or at least looking for scabs. Plain and simple.

Btw, striking workers are hurting as well. They aren't working, they don't have money to pay their bills, and they can lose their homes too. But they do it to ensure they are paid what their work is worth. The blame of the burden that a strike imposes should not be placed on the writers, but on the big bosses who refuse to pay proper wages because it cuts into their profits.

Theatrical unions are long past serving a necessary purpose. Sure, they're nice to have around and the checks and balances are noteworthy. But blind allegiance to these groups is only for the morally out-of-touch. SAG is definitely on its way out (Fi-Core is simply the best way to go–and all the big stars are doing it!) and these writers are righteous beyond belief. While I support their issue, I do not support their methods, for obvious reasons. And it's interesting how easily 'must-see' shows like The Office can be replaced with Caveman reruns on in the background, while I spend my free time living my own life, thank-you very much…..
