Later this fall, when the sales data for Vogue's September issue is available, we might all have a good laugh about how terrible it did on the newsstand because Anna Wintour put Keira Knightley on the cover, even though when she appeared on the magazine last June, it was among the year's worst-sellers (405k newsstand). To be fair, Knightley was seen dressing an elephant in Louis Vuitton.
Remember that Vogue-King Kong controversy that ambushed the media chattering classes back in March? Anna Wintour and Annie Leibovitz were gouged by politically correct knives for repeating a racist and stereotypical image of King Kong and a lady of liberty, making cover star LeBron James look like a screaming ape next to a helpless (though smiling!) Gisele Bundchen. Now that the dust has settled, it's time to look at how Americans at large viewed the issue. In a word, poorly.
Suddenly, after several years of being at the bottom of the fashion heap, black models are back on top. In a big way. Not only are they exclusively populating the pages of this month’s super-hyped Vogue Italia, Wintour & Co. also begrudgingly gave them some attention. At Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week, the designers of Dsquared used a group of models, led by Tyson Beckford, made up almost entirely of black men. And rumor has it that Lanvin’s show next week has an “all-ethnic lineup.”
The CFDA Fashion Awards, held last night at the New York Public Library, honored excellence in fashion design but also served as a venue for Victoria Beckham to crash as many photo opportunities as possible.

It has descended upon us: The Sex and the City movie premiered last night in New York City, much to the delight of … Eli Manning? He was one of the guests in attendance, for reasons unknown, at the type of over-the-top shindig that should only be reserved for stuff like the second coming of Xenu.

Last night, a handful of celebrities who seemingly had nothing in common gathered to honor — what else? — fragrance. The Fifi Awards, known as the Oscars of the fragrance industry, honored such achievements as best packaging and presented Vera Wang with a hall of fame award. But the real show was on the red carpet, where everyone's favorite D-listers (think Danity Kane and Minka Kelly) gathered to have their pictures taken and answer such hard-hitting questions as, "What are you wearing?" Scarlett Johansson wasted no time in debuting her engagement ring from fiancé Ryan Reynolds at last night's Costume Institute Gala at NYC's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Pretty much every celebrity you can imagine was in attendance (except for Reynolds), and 95 percent of the wardrobe choices made our heart cry.

Here’s a World War I enlistment poster (via) from 1917, famous from its era, that encouraged men to sign up with the army to fight the German enemy. (Interestingly, the Germans found it so convincing, they Nazis used the same concept for their own World War II poster.)
It’s hard to imagine Wintour or Leibovitz, or their staffs, in all their years studying photos and imagery, never came across this poster, or understood its racial ramifications with the ape carrying the helpless Lady Liberty.
Things got uncomfortable at Fashion Week when some crazies showed up to protest Dennis Basso's show, which features clothes made from real fur. We're all for making Anna Wintour feel uncomfortable, but anyone who is comfortable dragging around a skinned animal for a few hours creeps us out.

According to an item in today's Page Six, not only do people in fashion eat, they bitch about the catering if it's not up to snuff.
Anna Wintour likes to dine on steak, but guests at her Style.com party at Skylight Studios on Tuesday were served a model-esque meal of Piper-Heidsieck champagne, almonds and cheese sticks.
Our spy noted, "Everything was white, and there was no bar, no branding - just emaciated models eating cheese sticks."
Well of course everything was white. The world of fashion hates black people. Haven't you heard? That doesn't explain the cheese sticks. But, actually, those don't sound too bad.
Of course, not everyone has the luxury of being able to step over Fashion Week as if it were an errant mess on a city sidewalk.
