Ryan Gosling, star of Half Nelson—easily one of the best films of the year—took home an Independent Spirit Award last night and gave a great acceptance speech in which he acknowledged that he'll probably lose at the Oscars tonight:

Gosling says: "Whoosh... Forest called me last night and asked if I would win for him tonight. He says it's exhausting winning. I wouldn't know. He better win tomorrow, because I have a lot of money on it." He points out his mother in the audience. "Thanks, Mom. Forceps. I hope it's worth it. I don't see how that's possible. Thank you for my life." About the filmmakers, he says, "I've been trying to make a movie like this for a long time. Thank you for letting me be part of it. Thanks for letting me get nominated for all this stuff." And finally, to his team, he says: "I know you had to grease a few people. You guys have never made any money off of me. You never will. But you seem OK with that."

Doesn't this dude sound like a mensch?

Gosling's costar, Shareeka Epps, also won for Best Female Lead. See Half Nelson if you haven't.

My favorite show every year... He said the reason he won was Shareeka... it was very funny.

I can't get Rosario Dawson's "crack-headed teacher-man" out of my head.

Ryan is awesome. He will probably lose but Forest is AMAZING and I'm SOOO glad he was nominated. I'm watching now and I wish Jennifer Hudson could hurry up and win and steal BEYONCE's thunder some more. LOL I hate Beyonce.

Sorry, angela. I barely scanned it. I just saw the words "boast coast" and snapped. I've gotten SO sick of those posts. I guess you have as well.

Oh, and "that was were the one before you was heading" is some of the worst grammar I've ever seen in my entire life. That made me laugh.

Shouldn't tlatzoteotl be at school teaching instead of home in front of the computer? Being the best English teacher/writer in America, it would obviously be a shame to waste that talent and deprive our children just to knock around all day on gossip blogs.

Most people come to these spaces to relax and let loose, not to relive our school days...

So suck on that!

I was hoping to see that angela had seen my apology, and instead get some sarcastic comment about being a teacher. Nicole, you suck it. I am relaxing.

I'd hate to be an English teacher - I feel like strangling people over grammatical mistakes, and then I'd have to go to jail for child abuse.

I was hoping to see that angela had seen my apology, and instead get some sarcastic comment about being a teacher. Nicole, honey, I am relaxing - while at work. I've been looking at a 2000 line report erasing old data so once I give it to the secretaries they can do their charts without having to sift through tons of crap. It's tedious to say the least, and I don't have to do it, so I deserve as many breaks as I need goddamnit!

I'd hate to be an English teacher - I feel like strangling people over grammatical mistakes, and then I'd have to go to jail for child abuse. History was my favorite subject anyway.

Read the introduction to ???Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation??? ??? you might just understand my frustration.

Wow, angela. Thanks for directing me to that. It was a book I bought for 10 cents through a book club, and then ONLY read the introduction. My husband wanted it - I didn't care to read the whole thing. Lol! It seemed like it would be a good book, but when I saw it was written for the British, I put it down to read at some point in the future. Based on the introduction, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a hoax - it's more comedy than grammar rules.

The English language is just a touchy subject for me. I was extremely surprised when my community college counselor told me that I was one of the only people to ever get 100% on the English entrance exam. I've been reading at least half an hour a day since I was in 3rd grade, so I really get annoyed with people who say reading is boring. No, it's not, you just won't discipline yourselves. It's pure laziness, and it makes me mad. Doesn't anyone want to improve their minds anymore? Intelligence is earned through study, it's not inherent. For Nicole, who thinks I'm trying to make everyone relive their school days - education shouldn't be something that stops with school. Do you want to stunt your growth as a human being? The beautiful thing is that you can learn about whatever you want, and set your own pace. If you don't continue to learn, how do you expect your children to do well in school? They need to see their parents set examples.

Oh, and Angela, I know you didn't make a mistake. I was half hearing in my head the tone of those other posts when I saw the second half of the sentence.
