How Not to Live

stacylondon

I feel very strongly about this modern-day crisis of self esteem. There's a real epidemic going on, and if in some small way I can help a woman feel better about herself, there's nothing better.

So says Stacy London, half of the bitchy duo from TLC's fantastically stupid program What Not to Wear, in a new interview with the Rocky Mountain News.

After the jump, see London mock a successful, talented woman for looking "funny" and dressing "weird," all in the name of improving the self-confidence of ladies everywhere.

I'm sorry - I love Stacy and Clinton. And yes, they can be kind of harsh, but I think they do way more good than harm. It's amazing to see how some new clothes, a fresh hairstyle, and a bit of makeup can completely change a person's outlook on life. And yes, that may sound pretty pathetic, but a little self-confidence can go a long way. Don't blame Stacy and Clinton - blame our society - it is our focus on outward appearances that creates a market for shows like this.

yea, if anything, she's making people less confident, because she puts them in clothing they don't feel comfortable in.

i'd watch this show a lot more if she wasn't on it.

I don't like how she treats people, but I've never seen a show where a person didn't feel better about themselves after the makeover. But it'd be a hell of a lot better if these people VOLUNTEERED for the show rather than have their friends and family tell the world they're ugly and dress stupid.

I think you're being too harsh, Cord, and you're forgetting how the show constantly tells its "victims" how beautiful they are. Stacy London's comments are generally good-natured and funny, not ill-intentioned.

The show is all about how people don't have an accurate view of themselves when they look in the mirror. Whether or not it's wrong, people automatically form judgements about you based on the way you present yourself. I couldn't take some of the "successful, professional" women on the show seriously if they showed up dressed in their "before" clothes. People will find them much more inclined to react positively if they're wearing something that says "I respect myself", rather than "I can't be bothered."

That's true, she is really complimentary and suggests ways to highlight and flatter the good parts. But why on earth do they think I have to wear jeans, a blouse, a blazer, and ballet flats when I run to Target or the grocery store? I get that at work I need to look professional and that it's a good idea to not show up at Meet the Teacher night in ripped jeans and a shirt that says "They're real and they're spectacular," but if I need to go straight from the gym to my son's school to pick him up, I'm not going to get all dressed up.

Actually what bugs me most is that she uses the term "the girls."

I'm going to have to also disagree with you Cord.

I've seen this episode (as I have most episodes) of the show and while Stacy and Clinton may be harsh and judgemental of her wardrobe the difference in this girls look and confidence was amazing. By the end, Jennifer was really expressing her beauty in a better way and the way she carried herself had a noticeable difference.

More often then not, the folks madeover on this show have a complete overhaul in self-esteem on top of their wardrobe. They are really taught the best ways to show themselves and present their confidence.

Stacy and Clinton address body issues, fit, cut, trends, color and style and really help teach people the best clothes for their body. They are experts for a reason and they do seem to care about those who they help.

Also, at the end of this episode, they paid for Jennifer to get new head shots for her acting career.

It's noticeable even on camera that these women are being helped and do feel better about themselves once their time on the show is through. To tell someone that they are not dressing to the best of their abilities isn't mocking in my book. In many ways it's worse to not say anything and let this person continue to think they look good when they clearly do not.

I fucking love this show. So consider me fantastically stupid as well…at least I'm still fantastic ;)

I'm in the camp that thinks this show is actually a GOOD thing. There are a lot of women I know that could benefit from someone like Stacy and Clinton. It's not that everyone has to look like a glamourous model every day but wearing clothes that fit and flatter your figure actually does raise your self esteem. I don't think men, in general, have the same body issues (either real or imagined). Oh, and I'd love to get criticized and get $5000 to go shopping in New York.

The reason all people who watch "What Not To Wear" think it's a positive influence is because no smart people watch "What Not To Wear."

I think I'm pretty smart, but granted, I'm blonde.

I did graduate from college and have a job (which I'm clearly ignoring) and I do halfway decent at Jeopardy.

I don't think What Not To Wear is changing the way women look at themselves all over the world by any means, but I think it can help for someone to see a body type similar to their own on the show and learn what looks best.

The majority of the time, dressing in properly fitted, high end clothing will make one feel better about themselves then they did before.

I disagree as well. It's no The Swan — as far as makeover shows go, it's pretty tame. I think they give good advice and they really do try to incorporate the person's taste ans style.

On an episode I saw part of this weekend, there was a woman, like 30, who would wear a purple fox tail pinned to her ass! Your own style is one thing, but thank god for people like Stacy & Clinton who can break the news gently to people like this that such poor judgment can be fixed.

Yes, sometimes the 'victim' cries because they're all like 'boo hoo, they're changing me.' But that's usually just on the first night when they're alone in their hotel room after their wardrobe has been put in the garbage. They're all smiles by the time the reveal comes!

I also think half the time the family/friends aren't even really setting them up, that the 'victim' is in on it. My boss and I have plotted several times to 'set-up' each other for this, you get five grand in clothes! Who couldn't use that? Alas, we're too lazy to get the material together and mail it off.

cdd - that chick with the racoon tail was a hot mess when they started. I make my male roommate watch this with me, and he couldn't believe how good she looked at the end. And the difference in how she felt about herself was obvious. How is that a bad thing?

This is one of those shows that I decide to keep watching instead of finding a way for my girlfriend to change the channel. Dude, it's all about deconstruction. First, they tear you down. Then, they build you back up. It's kinda like when Mickey calls Rocky a "two-bit loan shark" before he decides to train him.

Speaking of training, Stacy's biceps are getting a bit big, though. Sorta like one of those dumpy kids in my neighborhood who sits on the end of his bed curling 20-pounders for hours on end, and does nothing else. She's starting to look like she could kick my ass, which isn't necessarily a bad or wrong thing on a woman, unless she's got a show where she's professionally confrontational. I'm afraid she's gonna put Clinton in a playful headlock and knock him out.

Ok, so I LOVE this show. I'll admit it.

I LOVE how they break it down like Dexter Street Lefty said. I LOVE how they throw away all the victim's clothes and then show better alternatives.

I LOVE, with a tingly feeling, how they give you lots of money to spend on new clothes.

Then, while the fashion victim is out shopping by themselves, just when you think that the victim has forgotten some of the rules, and might get lost, here come the duo. They save the day. Then, the vicitm REALLY gets it.

The best thing I LOVE is how Carmindy does your make up, and Nick creates a great hair style.

My daughter and friends have "secretly" submitted me many times over the years. But I have never been called.

It is a very relaxing show to watch.
