A commenter made a good point yesterday when they loosely compared old unfunnyman Gallagher to new unfunnyman Dane Cook. For the most part, we think it's an apt pairing, though we'd like to posit one thing: Isn't Gallagher's horribly corny but original watermelon shtick slightly better than Dane Cook's unoriginal, macho swagger?
After the jump, Cook's stellar bit about how gay guys are so lispy that it's impossible to understand them. Quote: "Fucking go be gay!"

I can't stress enough how much I hate Dane Cook. My hate for Dane Cook can only be rivaled by my hate for Jessica Alba. What kills me is everyone tells me how funny he is, so I watch his standup and didn't laugh once. How ridiculous is it that this guy is like 40 and still tries to come off as some macho frat boy.
Dear Cord,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I never understood why people think that he's funny. Jumping around like a spastic idiot and waving your arms around while yelling doesnt make something unfunny, funny. i also have been told to watch his stand up by my friends and siblings and barely chuckled a few times. More laughing at him then with him.
I don't know about worse, but similarly unfunny.
I knew he wasn't clever… but I didn't know he was homophobic. It's so sad that he gets away with it.
I am proud to have spawned this conversation. I never knew he had that gay rant. Interesting on two fronts. 1) I have always found him to be a bit effeminate. 2) He has this bit about "Ever have one of those days where you just feel a big cry coming on?" Now I am not saying being effeminate and crying a homosexual make, but is this a case of self loathing perhaps?
I must be insane for saying this after posting that I think Rush Limbaugh is funny, but I love Dane Cook. Dude can make me laugh. There. Please don't hate me, people. We are all family here at Mollygood, and I can just be the weird cousin that everyone rolls their eyes at. That's who I was growing up anyway, so it would feel right.
p.s. I do not hate, or even dislike, the gays. So if he's homophobic, I'm not saying that's funny.
When Good Luck Chuck came out, a girl I work with said she really wanted to see it, and asked if I wanted to. I said "No, I really don't think Dane Cook is that funny." Her response: "If you don't like Dane Cook, then you don't have any taste."
Well taste is relative. I don't understand why people don't think he's funny, but who am I to get mad about it? Your co-worker might have had other issues besides her mild Dane Cook fanaticism.
You got that right.
That's like when people say "If you don't like flan, then you've just never had good flan." God forbid people just not all be carbon copies of each other.
I'll be the 1st to say that his movie choices are awful, I don't think I laughed Employee of the Month or Good Louck Chuck due to the lack of acting ability & any even remotely funny lines. But when I watch his standup, especially the Vicious Circle & Rough Around the Edges I giggle so much that my tummy starts to hurt. Even though he may have "borrowed" material early in his career, now his standup is mostly based his owm experiences & I really thnk he should stick to it.
i'm not gonna lie, some of his stuff from 5 years ago before he became more well known cracked me right up. his kool aid bit about the big bowl of punch crashing through your walls? hilarious. his bit about "by a round of applause how are you feeling? somebody call an ambulance! this woman is sick, she's not clapping!"? also hilarious.
now he's all full of himself and decidedly unfunny. i haven't seen any of the movies he's been in (except waiting…which? hilarious, but not due to his performance.)
and homophobia ain't cool, no matter how funny you used to be.
oh, and if you don't share my opinion, than you're, like, totally stupid.
Dane is an amazing talent, a brilliant and generous man, and does not steal jokes from anyone. Just because he may have expressed a similar thought, it is unfair to say, “He must have stolen the idea.”
The proof is in the clips you supply. The subject matter on the surface may be similar but the execution is totally different. It's the same as if two songwriters write a song about a painful breakup. The subject matter is ubiquitous, but what makes one song special and unique is the execution of the idea. The idea itself is of no value without the execution.
Craig- He's not an "amazing talent" or "a brilliant and generous man," but he may not be plagiarizer. Obtuse minds think alike.
craig, the issue here isn't that he potentially stole bits (which is the lowest of the low and i happen to believe he did. Parallel thinking is common in comedy but his bits were just blatantly ripped…) But I digress. Regardless of that whole debate, the man is just not that funny. His jokes are painfully predictable and his demeanor is so off-putting. Also, he views himself as hilarious which is another blow against him. How funny people THINK they are, is inversely related to how funny they ACTUALLY are. The funniest people don't sit around thinking "holy shit i'm hilarious, and how can i get other people to think that?"…and i really get the feeling he does that at home.
Well, at least Gallagher is just corny harmless fun. And you KNOW you laughed. AT first, you did too laugh.
(He just carries it on just a little bit too long. )
He does what is similar to a fart joke. You can't help but laugh. The laugh comes from up out of you.
He isn't trying to put anyone down.
I am not Gallagher's mom by the way.
Wow. I can't believe the sense of humor most of you have. If you can't laugh at Dane Cook there has to be something honestly wrong with you. I went to one of his shows in Philly and the place was packed from end to end. You have to know how to take a friggin joke. He obviously isn't a homophobe. I'm sure noone on this forum has ever said a gay joke? You people are too damn serious these days. Thats the problem with the world today. Take any comedian whether is be Eddie Murphy ? Robin Williams ? Chris Rock ? Carlos Mencia ? Ralphie May ? ETC They have all made gay jokes. Its about letting loose and having a good time. For ex: Ralphie May is White!! His main focus is jokes about "black people" but do black people call him racist ? NO!!! There are 75% of the people in his audience! Think about it people before you jump to conclusions.
I have no respect for anyone who has stuck it to Jessica Simpson, period.
Ilz, talent is in the eye of the beholder. Or the be-laugher, in my case and Craig's.
I think he's funny, but the folks here at Mollygood feel good about themselves for hating all things popular - wow, I am so in awe of your go-against-the-grainism. Oh, how I strive to one day see the world through your fabricated, self-important tunnelvision. There was a time when this blog used to actually be good, like when it reported snarky commentaries of silly gossip. Dissecting the intentions and character of Dane Cook, are you fucking kidding me? This guy makes jokes about 'sammiches' and vaginas. Dane Cook may be unoriginal, but your post basically insults people who find him funny - as do many other posts. Moreover, the fact that I do enjoy his stand-up act does not make me a homophobe, fratboy, and/or douchebag. Get over yourself Mollygood, you people suck. You make Perez Hilton look good.
