Mad Men

It certainly looks that way, but perhaps we're just saying that because us "that one"s stick together.

At the next debate, Obama should do the thing where, after holding out his hand long enough that McCain gives in and goes to grab it, he yanks it up real quick and slicks back his hair. Gotcha maturity!

I've watched it a few times and can't figure it out. I was certain it was a rebuff but it could also be him trying to introduce Cindy and then feeling like a jerk after he realizes the rebuff - he sort of laughs and shrugs. This is also the first time I have given McCain the benefit of the doubt.

Sub-prime made it easy for people to get loans who historically wouldn't qualify based on - guess what - their credit history. Not only that, it was touted to exactly appeal to risky loan recipients from a "buy now, deal with it later" standpoint. If a single parent or a low-income couple walks into a bank and is all the sudden able to provide a home for their kids for little more than what they are paying in rent, PLUS the enticement factor of building equity, I would be hard-pressed to know how she or he would question it. From the second link (from 2004, which doesn't disprove that the educational correlation might be changing in THIS election), the table shows that the percentages of people with college of some type who favour each party is virtually equal.

Speaking as an uneducated dummy obama supporter:

I considered a sub-prime loan. I went in to my bank and discovered that I could buy a condo for a couple hundred dollars more a month at an interest rate that boggled my little pea brain. I did the math, and figured that in a couple of years, I would be further along in my career and/or married, and able to deal with the interest increase. I called my financial advisor (aka "Dad") to run the offer past him for advice. Because he was attune to reality, he educated me on the evils of sub-prime, likening it to leasing a car vs. buying. So today I still rent, but nothing is being taken away from me.

I cite this long-winded boring example because I think my situation was similar to many in my position that took the offer. I make a good income, pay my taxes, and want to further a stake in my future without living outside my means. Without the advice of someone who had my best interests at heart, I would be in the same boat as so many million Americans. To this end, I don't think the blame should be placed on the people who maybe didn't have a "financial advisor" to call.

Did I read wrong or did Matt insinuate we should be looking out for big business as in, "Honey, watch out for your brother so nobody beats him up"?

I wouldn't say big business keeps the country on it's feet. The consumers are what do that. When we stop buying shit big business is in trouble.

I do think we should watch out for them. Because big business will pat us on the shoulder with one hand while stabbing us in the back with the other.

Big business only cares about big business and not the uneducated working class people who buy what they offer. But when big business gets in trouble for giving everyone and anyone a loan they cry like a little baby. Come save us, come save us. They probably didn't care much when they were foreclosing on the little people. Thanks Enron for starting a fun trend here. Big business can bite me.

The questions to be asked of the candidates are:

Where is his/her allegiance?

How can we expect the trillion dollar deficit we just took on to be paid by the major reduction in taxes being proposed?

Why did the things that they were involved in not work?

What did they learn from the involvement?

Who are their heros?

They say that a strong leader surrounds themselves with capable staff and support that are able to give expertise in areas of weakness and strengths, who do they align with?

What are they going to do to get rid of the US concentration camps?

What are they going to do to give freedom and privacy back to the American citizens?

Can they sit down with their opponent and work out a bipartisan plan to help the US during this election instead of waiting to see who is going to be voted into office? (If they out and out refuse, then you can say it was a rebuff)

well, matt, I wouldn't go so far as to say you're "retarded", but certainly out of your league here.

yeah, you did say "most", but then didn't give us any info to support your claim that you say is "common knowledge". but it's not, so enlighten us with the source of your wisdom.

the fact that you still haven't tells me that you're just repeating what you heard from somewhere else. Be it Fox or some other slanted source, you "heard" it, believed it, and repeated it. but didn't research that "fact" yourself or else you would have some sort of back-up for your claim.

now, IF what you say is true, and that's a BIG "if", perhaps those demographics vote democrat because they realize that democrats do more for someone in their position (that is, offer more educational/job training activities) that would help them to further themselves. You know, to get out of their uneducated/poor lives they lead.

those sites you mentioned…I doubt that anyone on those places knows any more than a poster on here; it's just that they'll agree with you, take what you say as truth (as long as it jibes with THEIR views) and not ask you for proof of your claim. Just up your alley, I think.

so, don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you.

He's actually seen CANADIANS sneaking into the US for healthcare?!?

That's too ridiculous to even bother to refute. Janice, where are you to set this baffoon straight?

Normally I'm okay with a civil discussion of politics, ideologies, and social issues.

This is totally not one of those times.

I wish you well, Matt.

Sorry you're so full of rage (your word, if I recall) at those who disagree with you that you consistently choose name-calling to accentuate your views. You are most entitled to your passion and your opinions; it is your right. And I respect your right to it. But your arguments continue to lose credibility with me with every personal attack and insult. I refuse to be one of your targets. I'm not playing that.

Not that it matters much, but I don't agree with every plank on every political platform on either side. There are aspects of John McCain that I admire, and there are traits of Obama that I don't support. But it's useless to attempt an exchange of opinions when verbal spitballs are lobbed over the wall at every turn. And it's clear that you're on an offensive mission. None of us will change your mind, not that I think it's anyone's intent here (though some might try).

Matt, you're certainly not going to change mine. And calling me a name because of that won't help, either. But go ahead if it makes you feel better.

This is a battle I choose not to engage in. I have much better things to do.

Like surf for porn. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…

(p.s., killorn — correction: you're a gentleCHICK.) ;-)

You all. I worked in the Senate for years. All these guys do is grip and grin, i.e.,m shake hands. McCain clearly passed Obama's hand out for a shake off to Cindy. Senators rarely miss a chance to grip as it is an easy, more or less neutral act of greeting. Senators with class don't avoid it unless they want to send a message. Period.
