The American Way

The American Idol machine appears to be falling apart as of late, and a new interview with Brian Dunkleman will likely not help matters. Dunkleman, as you may recall, co-hosted the competition’s first season with Ryan Seacrest but stepped aside to allow Seacrest the chance to take over the world. Dunk gave an interview on Adam Carolla’s radio show to talk about his time on Idol, where he said he “developed such self-hatred” for taking part in a show he claims was mean-spirited and targeted specific contestants in an effort to break them. It’s quite disturbing, if you are one of those people who still thinks this show is completely fair and balanced.

[During the first studio show] I heard them talking about ‘We’re going to get [contestant] Jim [Verraros], we’re going to nail him,’ before the show. He’s the sweetest kid you’ll ever meet. He sings. He sings really well. Simon [Cowell] shreds him, just kills him, and the kid’s wellin’ up, he’s got tears in his eyes. He comes back to the couch, and I say to him, ‘Well, hey, Paula Abdul said she liked you, what else matters?’ Cut. The executive producer ripped me offstage, behind stage got in my face, started screaming at me. ‘What the [expletive] are you doing? You never once mentioned what Simon said to him that entire time?’ Chewed me out.

Finally, I just stopped and said, ‘Wait a minute. Let me just get this clear. These kids come back to this couch feeling like crap. I’m supposed to make sure they continue to feel like crap?’ He stuck his finger in my chest and said, ‘You’re [expletive] right.’ And that was day one. And I was, like, ‘What did I get myself into?’

I’ve worked in television as a production manager and I can tell you, without a doubt, that ratings over drama mean more to the producers than ratings over content. This is especially true in the world of “reality” TV. You could be plugging the most vapid and un-talented celebrity in the world, but if your celebrity has the body, the face and the hip-factor that intrigues the masses, you’ll get a whole lot of fluff and absolutely no meat. When those in the industry speak about selling their soul, best to listen and not walk the same path. Kudos to Brian for speaking out.

I worked as a reporter for an entertainment magazine and I interviewed a lot of “reality” castmembers. It’s difficult to get them to speak openly about what really happens on their shows (interviewers have to contact the networks, which have people who listen in on interviews to make sure their castmembers don’t talk too much), but some have managed to tell me some fairly horrifying stories, sometimes off the record and away from their supervisors.

Episodes are so unfairly edited that certain contestants are made to look insane, producers interfere with the cast to manipulate them into arguments or worse, and those “find your true love” dating shows? Yeah, those are taped in about 10 days to two weeks. No one I’ve ever talked to has seemed too thrilled with the experience of being on a reality or contest show.

I have always had suspicions that American Idol is not what it seems. I felt it has always been riggeed and manipulated. It is basically a lie and unfortunately, there are so many people out there willing to believe a lie just because it is entertaining. Eventually, the truth comes out. I think that time has come. Now, how do we get rid of Ryan Seacrest all together from television and media. He is such a vapid bore!

This jew is only upset because he got launched from the cash cow. I can’t stand Idol myself. Nothing but a bunch of fags and white chicks thinking they can sing like niggers or Britney Spears. Itz a sad commentary on Amurcan entertainment.

Aww! There’s still neo-nazis in 2008? You’re so quaint, govnndotcom.

(Mollygooders, don’t click on his shitty links, all you need to know it has such catchy taglines as ‘Hammering out the jew, one broadcast at a time.’)

govnndotcom: you realize you’re on a site written and frequented by those you hate and the white people who love ‘em? I can’t believe you came and posted on the site of a scary black man!

Sadly, I know we’ll never convince you that your beliefs are sad and wrong. But I’ll rest with a big fat smile on my face knowing that YOU KNOW that your ancestors came out of the loins of black people generations ago when we all started in our homeland of Africa. Hahaha, hubris will always get you in the end, govnndotcom!

ps- Is Brian Dunkleman even Jewish? I know tons of people with -man names who are Catholic, and not from converting. Anyway, it’s neither here nor there, it would just be extra funny for govnndotcom if he wasn’t.

Sweet Jesus! It keeps getting better! I googled ‘dunkleman’ and got this:

Steel Toes: Academy award nominee David Strathairn stars in co-directors David Gow and Mark Adam’s fiery tale of a Jewish, court appointed lawyer assigned the task of defending a murderous neo-Nazi skinhead…

No. 15 chock full of nuts says:

As I recall from watching season one of AI, Dunkleman sucked. He seemed drunk while on the air and came off as a hopeless douche. (And don’t even get me started on how hard it is to stand out as a drunk when Paula Abdul is sitting only a few feet away or a douche when Seacrest is standing right next to you!)

Does behind-the-scenes shit happen on reality tv? I’m sure it does. However, I find it just a bit precious that Dunkleman is now casting his departure from AI as some sort of moral or ethical awakening. If he was still on the show and raking in the AI gravy, he’d be singing a completely different tune.

And if he was so disillusioned with reality television after AI, why did he go on yet another reality show afterwards?
