Value Systems

Next week I'm scheduled to set foot on US soil for the first time in three months. I suppose it's about time I begin to get reacquainted with my mother nation's traditions and values, so I'm really happy this article ran in today's Wall Street Journal, reminding me that America is a place where serious thought is put into whether our politicians are fat enough to be good leaders.

… in a nation in which 66% of the voting-age population is overweight and 32% is obese, could Sen. Obama's skinniness be a liability? Despite his visits to waffle houses, ice-cream parlors and greasy-spoon diners around the country, his slim physique just might have some Americans wondering whether he is truly like them.

The candidate has been criticized by opponents for appearing elitist or out of touch with average Americans. A Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll conducted in July shows Sen. Obama still lags behind Republican John McCain among white men and suburban women who say they can't relate to his background or perceived values.

"He's too new … and he needs to put some meat on his bones," says Diana Koenig, 42, a housewife in Corpus Christi, Texas, who says she voted for Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary.

"I won't vote for any beanpole guy," another Clinton supporter wrote last week on a Yahoo politics message board.

USA! USA! USA!

Because it's better to have someone in office who is more likely to suffer from diabetes, or have a higher risk of stroke and/or heart attack.
Way to go America, great way to choose our future leader.
This reminds me of a friend who decided to vote for Bush last election because "his wife seems really nice".

Because, clearly, rather than inspire people to better themselves, it is the job of the American president to bow down to the lowest common denominator. Hooray for freedom!

If anyone said, "I won't vote for a fat candidate", he'd be considered a terrible person.

*Although I wouldn't call Bush, Clinton, Bush, or Reagan fat (especially when they started). Right?

Do I need to point out that if there was a fat person running for President that people would say they are a bad choice because they're fat? The amount of stupid people in the country is just staggering. You know there are people who will hear about this and think, you know, he is too skinny to be our leader. I say hear about it because lets be honest, most people don't read for themselves, they just wait for someone to tell them their opinion.

I seriously hope they had to dig hard to find those idiotic comments. I swear- we should have to pass some kind of intelligence and awareness test to be able to vote.

Grr…WTF? Why does fat equal stupid? Why in the Jeebus' name would you vote for someone based on the size of their ass??? Sometimes I really hate this sensationalist stupid crap. It is more fodder for the "Americans are Stupid" mill, and even worse, it has about as much to do with election outcomes as the post about each candidates popularity with pet owners. Really??? Reallly? Now they have to court the dog owners/kitty cat crazies vote and the twinkie vs. organic flaxseed granola vote?
I am fat and I eat organic food and I have a doctorate and I like American Idol AND "Spaced". Suck on it, media.

Wow. I can't believe that anyone's qualifications for a president include certain physical charateristics. But, this is probably coming from the same people who think getting a blow job makes you a bad president and living on a "ranch" instead of in a mansion makes you a good president. And choosing to pronounce words correctly and speak in complete, coherent sentences is elitist and bad, yet mangling words and misquoting stupid cliches makes you "one of the people" and "someone they can relate to." (Although the actual quote would say "too.")
Oh please don't let it be revealed that Obama likes jazz or classical music. He should do a press conference now and proclaim he loves country/western. He should even start wearing some NASCAR paraphernalia.

If I were to vote for a president based soley on their body type I would vote for the skinny one. If the President of the United States has time to work out and go for a run, then I sure as hell have no excuse.

There are some theories that self-control is like a muscle because you tire it out if you use it too much. For example, if you exhibit self-control in terms of working long hours, it's harder to control what you eat. I wouldn't care if a president was overweight because there are more important things for him or her to focus on.
But I wouldn't care if he or she was really skinny, either. (Maybe the stress and the busy schedule makes them eat less? Maybe it's genetic?)
And I sure as hell wouldn't give a cock's ferret if he or she was an ideal weight. More power to 'em.

Ilz, one could also argue that if you are overweight, then you are somehow not in control of your life if you aren't able to control what you eat and how you treat you body. Not that this runs true for everyone, but I know that when I'm organized and in control, I take much better care of myself. It's when my life seems to fall apart that I overeat

when bill clinton was eating at mcdonald's the press skewered him for it.

basically, if you're a democrat, it doesn't matter what you do because it will be wrong.

but then the media will cry about liberal bias.

the truth has a liberal bias.

    confucius said that.

whoever raised those kids should be thrown in jail; i consider it child abuse to allow your children to become obese. if you starve your kids you go to jail so the same should apply to parents who allow their children to over eat.

I agree deimos. It's not fair to the kids. People take a look at kids who have been malnourished as clearly abused, but the parents of morbidly obese kids aren't thought of as mistreating thier kids. It's simply poor parenting. Yes, there's always one or two exceptions (which I have to mention now or someone else will jump down my throat and pull the "thyroid problem" card), but those cases are few and far between.

You are all acting like Americans really believe this and it is not simply a projection from the fevered imagination of a partisan Wall St Journal 'reporter'. In fact if you look at the message board where the 'reporter' did her 'research' you'll find that with the one exception (dubious as it is) she quoted, everyone else just laughed at her for asking such a stupid question. This question is so lame that it got troll rated and you have to click on 'one star' comments to even be able to see it.

blah- You're right. I just meant that I would not see it as a falw (even a trivial flaw) that affects someone's ability to be a president because there are theories that present how every body type has it's "good signs about self-control." This renders all of them moot.

True. Look at William Taft, Grover Cleveland and Teddy Roosevelt; all grossly overweight and served as presidents (Cleveland and Roosevelt for more than one term). I think nowadays, everything is so visual and superficial that a candidates weight would end up being an issue. Someone would "go there" with it.
