Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were recently wed in a very well-publicized ceremony in Beverly Hills. After that, DeGeneres took to her blog to decry California's Proposition 8, the constitutional amendment that would eliminate same sex couples' right to marry and could possibly nullify all the gay marriages that came before it.
Yet despite all the good she's done for gay rights in California, there's rumbling coming from other Proposition 8 opponents who say DeGeneres needs to contribute more. Specifically, Ellen has yet to send a big, fat check to the cause, and insiders say that that omission has the potential to hurt both Ellen and Prop 8 in the long run.
“We have raised a record $11 million to fight Prop 8. Unfortunately, the other side has raised $16 million and is raising money at a feverish pace. We need to catch up and match them dollar for dollar,” Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California and leader in the No on 8/Equality for All campaign, told IN Los Angeles magazine. “With an expected 13 million voters and the most expensive media markets in the nation, it takes tens of millions of dollars to get your message out. If we can get our message out at the same rate as they can, I believe we will win. But if they continue to have more resources, it will be very difficult for us to prevail.”
So while their visibility as openly LGBT celebrities and entertainment power players is important, their financial absence from the specific fight to save the fundament right of same-sex couples to marry is hurting.
Other gays noticeably absent from the No on 8 donors list: Rosie O'Donnell, Elton John and Melissa Ethridge.

This is absolutely stupid. Just because she believes in living her life, and needs laws to change so she can do that, doesn't mean she has to support the financial 'obligations' of the cause. I still don't understand why affecting legal change is so damn expensive when all it takes is somebody's signature.
Sar.. it is sad isn't it? Do you think the founding fathers would be proud of how we buy and sell ourselves for "the good of the people."
Wow… this is extremly close-minded. Some support with money and some through their actions.
Ellen obviously is the latter. They should be happy there are people who are open and do good not only with money. Their wedding video was a better promotion than a million dollars could be.
Definitely sad. Our government shields itself with this insistence: "If you want it, you should be willing to pay for it." But it goes too far. There's no way to justify charging people for equality, especially since the very documents that the government upholds have always said that it's our right.
So their plan is to use emotional blackmail on Ellen DeGeneres, thats some good thinking there people.
Ellen has done more with her actions and TV show than any other gay star and they are going to throw her under the bus for giving money. If I was her I would be pissed off at these people, but she is too nice for that, so I will be pissed off at them for her.
Freedom isn't free. It costs a buck-o-five.
Just couldn't help the reference but I absolutely agree with what the other commentors have already said.
Ellen is rich. Would it hurt her to give more money?
Thank you, sar. I think it is important for people who have the money to donate, but why do we have to pay for legal decisions like this? I think it's a good thing to NOT donate.
Probably not Broomstick, but that is for Ellen to decide. Because the path she pioneered starting with the "Yep, I'm Gay" cover and has continued to build with her movement efforts just isn't enough, I'm afraid.
What is it about when people become icons, we all expect them to be messiahs? They're just people. What Ellen has done for the cause is worth far more than money, yet this is what people are boiling it down to. Sad.
The other side of this that people assume that just because someone is famous they have money to burn. Ellen probably does have a lot of money compared to most people but she isn't Oprah rich.
The publicity she brings to the issue from her show far out strips any dollar amount she could give.
I respect everyone's opinion, but if the LBGT community wants to keep equal rights in California, everyone should do everything they can - give what they feel they can afford to give in terms of time, money, and energy. Many of these celebs have give of themselves and they should be thanked. However, to protect equal rights, they should consider donating - particularly if they have the money. Political victory has always required financial investment. It may not be ideal, but that is the reality.
killorn and keebler, both very well said.
this is like when your roommate has a big car payment, so even though she makes more money than you, she expects you to pick up more of the extra expenses like toilet paper. it's my money, and we're equal roommates, and once i've done my part you don't get to assume i owe any more just because i supposedly have more to spend.
and anyway what if ellen really wants a jacket from anthropologie and a new computer. just sayin!
Goner, she should be able to consider it privately and come to a decision. This is like they're calling her out on not really caring or not backing the cause - which, like Keebler said, is basically blackmail. I for one would probably withhold donations, simply because I feel like putting more money into the machine is voluntarily playing by its oppressive rules.
I also like to think some people don't issue a press release when they do something for a cause close to their hearts.
I'll agree about calling her out publically. I don't like the method at all.
It's just incredibly entitled.
Ellen's wedding and the way she handled it as well as her discussions about Prop 8 on her show are worth millions and millions of dollars of publicity for the issue. That wedding video she shared had everybody who watched it crying. Equality California could not do what's she's already done even if they had more cash and she's already done it so there's cash saved since they don't even have to try - they should be thanking her not trying to bully her publicly.
I'm not sure I understand the conclusion of this article. The quote from Geoff Kors doesn't say anything about Ellen or any other LGBT celebrities giving or not giving. It's the conclusion of whoever wrote the article not the leaders of the campaign.
I agree the Ellen's publicity around her own marriage is worth millions. But I'm puzzled by the comments on here such as "I think it's a good thing NOT to donate." If the other side is raising millions of dollars to eliminate your equality what good comes from not donating?
Ellen has lots of money and she should pony up. What about her covergirl profits? People magazine gay wedding cover?? That should go to this cause! She pocketed the money and expects everyone else to donate to PROP 8.
She is a selfish loser and it is funny how she has not stepped up on her own! SHAME ON YOU ELLEN! She has really become a low life. It shows her true colors. The only reason she is popular is because she is gay. I mean it is what made her popular. Her acting is poor and her sitcom was not superior. She has milked the gay thing. Now she should pay her dues. If not I will boycott her show and write to my tv station. I am sure union members would hop on the campaign.
I think it's safe to say that PFLAG won't be receiving a Christmas card from skin-suit Maddie this year.
@ Maddie
A lot of people liked her waaaaay before her come-out. (I loved her book: "My Point - and I do have one).
And could it be that she actually gives money to certain institutions without talking about it? There are still people out there who don't shout from every roof whatever good deed they have done…
Is it so impossible to think she is one of them?
coming-out, or outing or whatever you call it… (sorry, English isn't my first language).
california guy…
to me, it's about a much larger issue than gay marriage. it's about the idea that politics should revolve around who's paying the most. i do realize that if the other team is raising money, you've got to raise money also. but i guarantee ellen et. al. have an entire set of convictions, not just the one central conviction that marriage is their right. it's silly to assume that she should contribute $ disproportionately to one single cause, when i'm sure there are a lot of causes that matter to her.
by that token, everyone with a good job who believes in the continued legalization of gay marriage should contribute financially. that includes people who support other causes, people who support families, people who are saving up, etc. there's just no fair way to judge what someone you don't even know should do with their money.
i didn't mean to jump on you there, i just feel strongly that we have more options than we're often given, and so i believe it's possible for her to help the cause without contributing $ - and maybe in doing so, affect other positive changes.
I liked ellen too, but she was not POPULAR! That is the difference! She did not make the cover of magazines being a great writer or talented actress! Look back and see! I never once saw her on the cover of people magazine saying "I'm a brilliant comedian"!
Think about it people!
I am a gay woman who WAS an Ellen fan until I opened my eyes to her games. She is horrible representation for the Gay community! We want respect and equal rights and fairness in laws but she crosses picket lines, disregards legal contracts (iggy) and tosses her pets like yesterday's news! She had many dogs over the years who she has abandoned! DO THE RESEARCH! She is a fraud and has you all fooled!
For all the people who still think ELLEN is all that I have a bridge in NY I think you might want to buy.
***singing.. "to the neon God they prayed"***
*wondering why americans are so ignorant and blind to the truth*
Yeah guys! Ellen's a dick!
"LOOK IT UP!" That's for the hags that remember the great breast feeding debate of '07. I sure hope Rachel's milk came in, wherever she is…
