Bad Ideas Turned Good

rdjblackfacedunno

Though we're still not sure we're 100 percent at ease with it, there are two mitigating factors to consider before getting angry about Robert Downey Jr's turn in blackface in the upcoming film Tropic Thunder: 1) he looks authentically black, not cartoony and 2) when not in blackface, he's practically in whiteface. See what we mean after the jump.

Personally, I'd be angrier about being forced to watch a movie featuring Ben Stiller and Nick Nolte.

You all act like people didn't have shit to say about White Chicks. White people love to make movies where other white people get to say/do offensive things as long as they tack a "just kidding" onto it.

Holy crap deimos. Those fireballs freaked me out and I was sober.

Since I'm brown I can keep my rage in check till they start making banana boat movies. Or Kevin Costner makes; Dancing With Wolves 2, Electric Boogaloo. That movie offended me deeply.

Please tell me that is Nick Nolte. I have a lot of love for Jack Black and Ben Stiller, but they can both get on my nerves sometimes. But if Nick Nolte is in this movie, I will be there on opening night!!

I thought white chicks was offensive and I'm black, not to mention the shit wasn't funny.

I think it's fine only because when I first saw the pic a while ago, I actually thought it was a black man. He doesn't look mockingly minstrel or cartoony, he looks legitimately black. Complexion is correct (not that offensive tar shit) and even the hair looks authentic. He looks fine, now the movie on the other hand looks horrible, and thats the more offensive act.

I hate being called black. Only in america am I reduced to a goddamn color. geesh.

#1) If anything I'm a hazelish chestnut complexion, so that makes me brown.

    #2) Actually thats it.

Now I need to get more specific with my brown. I guess I'm more beigey olivey. I do know that crayola has yet to make a crayon that matches me. It would be nice if my children could finally make me a mothers day portrait that's not grizzly bear brown.

Morgan, I'd have to agree… I've never met a "black person" who was actually black. I've seen dark chocolate to coffee with double cream and everything in between, but never black.

I myself am among the palest of the pale even by caucasion standards… the kind of pale where you can see the veins in my arms, hands etc. I would love to have even a smidge of pigment. Watching blood flow through one's skin isn't the least bit atractive.

Obviously I'm an 85 bright white or anything. My skin tone is an extremely pale peachy shade with gentle lemon undertones… at least that's what they told me when I had my colors done at Saks a million years ago.

But I'm not kidding about being able to watch the blood flow. Back in the day when we'd get REALLY messed up we'd find pressure points on my arms and legs. It was kind of like making rivers in the sand box and damming them up and the releasing the water.

(Yes… small town = limited entertainment.)

If you read about the movie, the idea is that Downey's character is an actor who gets cast in a role that was written for a black actor so he gets it into his head to do the movie as a black man. It's supposed to be a satire on actors and their pseudo-profound ideas about their characters.
