I must say that this isn't about Black models alone though except for the token black belle (currently Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman… and kudos to the many designers who seem to hire CI to kill two birds with one stone. Pure genius). Asian models are oh so underrepresented and for some reason though they are major consumers. Why in the world was Gemma whatever on the cover of the first Vogue India? Why is it that white models get flown in for shows in Tokyo when there are equally tall, beautiful women right there?

The Vogue Italia seems like a media stunt to be honest. Sean John line uses LOTS of "ethnic" models as do Baby Phat and Heatherette.

The problem with stunts* like this that it exploits black men and women as a "fad" by using them disproportionately, as a statement rather than a fact of every day life. I don't know what the designers are thinking, maybe they really are only thinking of fashion rather than social reform, but to me it only highlights how many qualified black models are out there who are not used enough. You weren't talking about America as a whole, you were clearly speaking about blacks. What other college fund besides The Negro College Fund? Awards show doesn't count, there's one for everything.
These "double standards" you refer to are there to help counteract all of the constant "double standards" you probably don't even realize exist. Racist treatment of blacks absolutely did not stop in the 70's. This isn't past, it's current. It's not rare, it happens daily, everywhere.

I am not racist in any sense of the word, but I think Kate brings up a valid point. In high school there was the MECHA club, the Pacific-Asian Islander club, etc. If anyone had tried to start "A Club For The Rest Of Us Generic White People" they would have been immediately labeled a racist. Kind of like those shirts that read "Black Pride" or "Brown Pride", if anyone white person tried that they would be in a world of hurt. White people want a culture too, sometimes we just feel excluded.
