Suddenly, after several years of being at the bottom of the fashion heap, black models are back on top. In a big way. Not only are they exclusively populating the pages of this month’s super-hyped Vogue Italia, Wintour & Co. also begrudgingly gave them some attention. At Milan’s Men’s Fashion Week, the designers of Dsquared used a group of models, led by Tyson Beckford, made up almost entirely of black men. And rumor has it that Lanvin’s show next week has an “all-ethnic lineup.”

Black or African American alone: 12.2% or 37.1 million
Asian alone: 4.4% or 13.1 million
American Indian or Alaska Native alone: 0.8% or 2.4 million
Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander alone: 0.14% or 0.43 million
Some other race alone: 6.3% or 19.0 million
Two or more races: 2.0% or 6.1 million[18]

73 percent of the US pop is white. But i swear to god its like 99% of network tv, fashion, news eect that is white. That doesnt seem equally proportioned to me.

So why is ok to have an all black fashion show and not an all white one? Becuase if you want to watch an all white one you can watch pretty much every fashion show out there.

And why, pray tell, would the majority race need an all white anything? I get why minorities would want an all asian, all black, all hispanic whatever. It makes sense, you want to see your face, and your culture, something you do not see everyday because you are minority. But when you are the majority you see it everyday.

I smell a gimmick here. I must say that this isn't about Black models alone though except for the token black belle (currently Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman… and kudos to the many designers who seem to hire CI to kill two birds with one stone. Pure genius). Asian models are oh so underrepresented and for some reason though they are major consumers. Why in the world was Gemma whatever on the cover of the first Vogue India? Why is it that white models get flown in for shows in Tokyo when there are equally tall, beautiful women right there?

The Vogue Italia seems like a media stunt to be honest. Sean John line uses LOTS of "ethnic" models as do Baby Phat and Heatherette.

it makes no sense to say that the issue of underrepresentation of blacks in the fashion industry wouldn't be an issue without whiny babies like spike lee.

it makes no sense to say that featuring black models in a handful of shows when for the past twenty plus years, fashions shows and magazines feature almost exclusively non-minority models is some sort of "double standard." i don't even know what you mean by that. and if you cannot understand that the NAACP and BET were created to give blacks in America opportunities that were not available to them because of this country's racist history, then i don't know how to explain that very simple fact to you.

and, the point i was attempting to make is that the post references vogue italia, and a milan show, and a french designer's show. so your references to BET and the NAACP are not really relevant to whitney's post.

do you not give three shits if the other commenters here think you're racist, or do you not care about being perceived as racist by anyone? because the former is understandable– we're anonymous people arguing like morons (myself included) on the internets. the latter, however, suggests that you have no desire to open your mind to other perspectives and shed the shackles of ignorance. and that, is sad and indicates that your notion that racism wouldn't exist if people woud just stop talking about it (a point you have made in other posts) is dead wrong.

You weren't talking about America as a whole, you were clearly speaking about blacks. What other college fund besides The Negro College Fund? Awards show doesn't count, there's one for everything.
These "double standards" you refer to are there to help counteract all of the constant "double standards" you probably don't even realize exist. Racist treatment of blacks absolutely did not stop in the 70's. This isn't past, it's current. It's not rare, it happens daily, everywhere.
STM makes an excellent point. Have an open mind to what others experience. How you've always perceived something, understood something, doesn't mean that's correct.

The 'they have their own things(networks, college funds etc) why can't we?' It just makes you sound like a child who wants it all and refuses to share. First off in case you haven't noticed most networks are geared towards wp(white people) because they are what- the majority. It's funny you have no problem with that. There are also networks geared to people who think they are not being represented all over television - logo, cmt, telemundo and lifetime anyone? Oh and the "there will never be enough" comment.
