I've never seen a complete episode of either show. I only have one tatoo but I do remember everybody at the tatoo place was a lot of fun. It seemed less fun and more fighting from what I saw. I guess tattoo places are less fun and more racist then I remember.

Kat Von D is on tv for one reason: she is young and has a pretty face. This is what set her apart from the multitudes of other tattoo artists that could have been selected to have their own show. This characteristic does not mean that she is therefore incapable of also being a racist. Paris Hilton has lots of fans, too. That didn't stop her from videotaping herself spewing racial slurs, and frankly, it did not seem to damage her popularity. What's to deter a reality "star" from doing the same?

However, the American tattoo culture has a very long and strong association with racist and anti-semitic people, both artists and fans. While this may not be as true now as it was a few years ago, there is still a strong element of this kind of sentiment in these circles. A dear friend of mine opened the first black owned and operated tattoo shop in America in the 1970s, her name is Jacki Gresham–ask her how liberal and accepting that community is. She will tell you. In answer to your question about so-called blue collar workers, yes. I think you should be completely fucking surprised if you meet someone like "Dog," the bounty hunter– a man who was a member of a white supremest motorcycle gang, a meth runner, and generally white trash piece of shit–if he actually loves black people. Additionally, I think you should not be stunned if a person who likely comes from a family of actual nazis, doesn't like Jews. Finally I think people should not be surprised that people who are popular television personalities might also be racists. I think people have a very difficult time separating the difference between "talented portrait artist" and possible bigot. The two things are not mutually exclusive.
