Backstabbing

kanyeangel

Still not sure if Kanye West is a complete idiot? Check out his new Spin interview, an unalloyed testament to the man's utter incomprehension of race.

It's frightening that he gets to mouth off in such major forums, but even scarier is that we think he actually believes this shit:

• "Take 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.' It's a white sample, but everything I do to it is to make it as black as possible."

• "There's certain things that black people are the best at and certain things that white people are the best at. Whatever we as black people are the best at, I'ma go get that. Like, on Christmas I don't want any food that tastes white. And when I go to purchase a house, I don't want my credit to look black."

• "White-people food? You know what it is. You never ate fried chicken and said, 'This tastes white.'"

• "I'll tell you one thing, as a black person: We have no problem breaking ourselves for what we want."

"White sample"? "Black credit"? How quickly would Al Sharpton call for his head had Bruce Springsteen said any of this?

We've said it before and we'll say it again: KANYE WEST DOESN'T CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE.

See then Kanye says shiat like this and I don't know if he's putting on an act and being really really smart. But as his apologist, (here and at another few choice blogs) I am starting to wane from the notion that he's brilliant. I saw Tracy Morgan last night on telly and he was "in character" and it was amazing, or Andy Kaufman, that guy was always using an alter ego. But with Kanye there is no rhyme or reason and unfortunately I am starting to back away from an artist I enjoyed. Bummer. Ruined my holidaze.

I mean the guy sells a lot of albums, and his contemporaries don't get as much press on the dumb things they might say…I think the media just doesn't know how to handle this, and so, Kanye is just encouraged to act out, more and more like a toddler.

Is it really so ridiculous to identify Daft Punk as "white" music? I'm black and I listen to Daft Punk, but I don't think that undermines the premise. Obviously it's a broad sweeping categorization, but it's based on general truth. Which is usually what you get in jokes and interview outtakes.

And as an established and successful cultural miscegenator, I'm more inclined to go with his "comprehension" of race over this dumb-down-egalitarian approach. "Kanye West doesn't care about black people" … really? I mean if we're so beholden to speaking in truths, do you honestly believe that? Get off the low-horse cause you're going for an easy joke as much as he is.

Negro please. He said he "does everything to make it black," - intimating that it being "white" makes it inferior. Just like when he says he wants "white credit" - he is saying that "black credit" is inferior. So he is not gonna "get that" good credit because it isn't something that "black people are best at?"

He talks about recognizing difference - that is fine with me, hell celebrate the fuckers. But it somewhat belies his point when the next words are about how the difference is inferior. He isn't into celebrating, he is into excluding and belittling - every race. How fucked up is it that he says there are certain things that certain races are best at and he is (only is the implication) going to go after what his race is best at. Well, everyone who is the exception and not the rule is screwed, and those that are unqualified get to have a sense of entitlement. I refuse to live in that world - it is too damned limited. And only a sheep would accept it.

The racist statements can be placed in the mouth of any white-supremacist and directed toward people of African descent. So many blacks repeat this drivle without giving deep thought to what they're actually saying about themselves.

Instead of realizing that we are as human as any other race or ethnic group on this planet, some of us give further credence to racist and limiting arguments that desperately try to prove we are inferior to every other race.

    @ TAN,
My father is black as night and an expert at cooking crêpes. My mother is a green-eyed German and used to cry with laughter at Richard Pryor. My Daft Punk records lean on my Sam Cooke records, all of which sit next to my copy of "Leaves of Grass." Now, what "general truth" is there in giving art a color? (And anyway, if we're speaking in those terms, aren't the heavy bass lines and percussion of Daft Punk reminiscent of tons of great "black" music? Muddled!)

Pardon me while I get on my "low-horse," but I was raised - rightly, I believe - to not look at things in terms of color. Too often in life I've encountered people who weren't. They're the ones who tried to belittle me for "dressing white" or "talking white." "But I AM part white!" I would scream. That was meaningless to them. All that mattered was that I looked mostly black and was therefore easily classifiable. I was like a Daft Punk CD: Black guy, white music, white clothes, etc.

I do believe Kanye West doesn't care about black people. And, if he does, he has a funny way of showing it. Personally, I wouldn't want a representative of my race saying bad credit is "black." (And I know a lot of white grad students who would beg to differ with that sentiment.)

Then again, I don't consider myself black. I also don't consider myself white. I consider myself me. What color is individuality?

How many times have you heard Britney Spears or other artists have cracked-out interviews? And everyone keeps crawling back to them and loving them. But let Kanye speak his mind about one thing and he's banished from the music community. Any hip-hop or rap music that has an ounce of intelligence in it is disregarded so fast is shameless. Everyone LOVES 50 Cent and thinks he is the best rapper in the game. He sure isn't! You all need to give credit where credit is due, and Kanye is one of the best artists of our time. Recognize that!

Diversity is recognizing differences, and I find it annoying when people get offended when artist (specifically Black Artist) say that something is distinctly from their culture. Kanye did essentially take a track that was made by two white men and made it sound blacker. He probably could have said he took a techno track and made it more hip hop, but that wouldn't be any more true than the way he originally stated it.

This coming from the guy dedicating a song to Sierra Leone then rapping about not winning awards.. lovely. Why this guy gets publicity while Lupe Fiasco wallows in semi-obscurity is ridiculous.

And this whole making music blacker thing.. it's the same damn song! Give me a break.. adding an a few beats to an exisiting song doesn't make it blacker, it makes you a hack. He could have just said he liked the track and used it, instead he basically said he rewrote the thing which is a complete load.

Totally overrated. Try writing something "real" before you tell us your keeping it as such.

    Not just taste either.

You can have two people from similar backgrounds with similar experiences who have perspectives that are from different angles. The beautiful thing about this life is that no one is wrong. Just different ways of feeling or seeing something.

Debating is good if it opens your mind to see things from someone else's experience.

everybody is taking these comments so seriously. in this politically correct world it is nice to hear people who tell it like it is. we can all say we dont think race is an issue and weve been raised differently blah blah blah….its bullshit. as racist as it may seem everything that he said has some truth to it. its not like hes going out an making shit up…many of you interpret pride for arrogance because you yourselves have nothing to be proud of

Sorry, never posted here before but I had to let that out. Read the comments, didn't check the names and I just typed that in because I really didn't want to bother coming up with a name. My bad, I relinquish the name back over to you.

Break the chains that the liberal media has put on you. Quit being such a bunch of bleeding little pussies. So what Kanye's racist. You are too but you're just to afraid to admit it. By the way I'm white…and I think Kanye is a White hatin' coon and his music sucks. Fuck you.

Cord, I'm half black too but you know the "one drop" rule still applies in our culture. If you look tan, you black! Personally, I have no problem with it and identify as Black (epecially since it pisses off my racist Irish grandma, god bless her soul) but I guess I see why other bi-racials can get put out.

It's a new low for Kanye to come out with this ill-informed bubblegum shit.
But then, most of us wouldn't want conversations with our friends published in a magazine in case it was mistaken as racist, ignorant or whatever else.
His records are great, his confidence is a nuclear reactor operated by a drunken Homer Simpson. He is in a lofty position, surrounded only by people who tell him he's the shit.
Who wouldn't come out with stupid shit if they were in the same position?

have any of the songs that Kanye West released even been "original"? the only ones that come to mind are re-makes or songs that he's sampled. and who cares if you have "black" credit or "white" chicken? YOU'RE A MUSICIAN!! Make some of your OWN music and just maybe you will be respected and get the attention you want without making such an ass of yourself everytime you open your mouth.
