Of the 10 movies on Yahoo’s “Most Historically Inaccurate” list, preachy boozer Mel Gibson had a hand in three: The Patriot, Braveheart and Apocalypto. According to historians, the films include everything from anachronisms — “kilts weren’t worn in Scotland until about 300 years after William Wallace’s day” — to dangerous half-truths — “The conquistadors arriving at the end of [Apocalypto] made for unlikely saviors: an estimated 90% of indigenous American population was killed by smallpox from their infected livestock.” If you’re taken aback, 1) stop believing movies and 2) whaddya expect from a guy whose favorite work of non-fiction says people used to live to be 700?

I watched Apocalypto and I don’t think that the conquistadors arriving at the end were supposed to be seen as “saviors”. The guy spent the whole movie trying not to be killed and just when he thinks he has succeeded these huge boats come. If anything, it just made me think, “well that sucks”.

Did the Scots still paint their asses blue? Because if not I have to cut out a slew of painting boy parts blue jokes from now on. Damn you Gibson!

ilnaz-

Or Hillary or McCain or Bush or really any President we’ve ever had. Protestants, Quakers, a Catholic. . . not an atheist or agnostic (or even Jew) in the bunch. You can’t single Obama out for that.

Is that some new Mel Gibson movie coming out? I’m sure all the men will be wearing some kind of leggings or loin cloth. All his movies have that in common.

I may be in the minority, but for me the whole point in going to see a movie is to ESCAPE reality. If I wanted to see historically correct fare I would go to my local library and check out a book or rent a documentary. And none of those movies was ever publicized as a documentary. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Exactly, and that’s his job isn’t it.
He is suposed to entertain you not to teach
you history. I think his movies are great
to watch and they feel authentic. That doesn’t
mean that they have to be accurate.
