Mad Men

The lesson of this nine-minute excerpt from last night's Late Show? Don't cancel on David Letterman at the last minute with the a bald-faced lie. He will show a clip of your lying ass planted firmly in makeup chair several hundred miles away from where you said you'd be.

Dave was on my shit list because he actually had those vapid, useless twits known as "Speidi" on as guests.

But with this little tidbit, he's working his way back.

I've always liked Dave and have a soft spot for him since he was the first late-night host I liked, and this just reminded me of why I like him. I love that this made him so upset. Kinda like that crotchety old man who tells you to get off his porch. Oh, wait, that's McCain.

Classic. You burn David, he burns you back…the difference is that he has a television show that could influence millions of voters. I wouldn't piss him off.

The reason this whole hoopla is going on is because they don't want Palin to participate in a debate. Don't you think it's a little strange that McCain's suggestion is the Presidential debate be rescheduled for the night of the VP debate? She still isn't ready. It's obvious by how they've been "hiding" her. Did you catch her interview with Katie Couric. Again, she had the deer in headlights look the whole time and her voice sounded as shaky as the girl from that beauty pageant who kept saying, "such as the Iraqs". Awful…

No. 13 JD says:

I saw the Katie Couric interview. Caribou Barbie had that 'moose in the headlights' look last night when Katie kept pressing her for examples of what Grampy McSame has done in 26 years to help regulate he market when he has for DEregulation for the majority of his career.

Caribou Barbie's response: (Said in her nasaly, midwestern flat A voice) 'Well Katie, I'll have to find those and get those back to ya.' That was her answer after trying to deflect the question by talking about how Grampy is such a maverick.

MAVERICK - Taken from dictionary.com - Southwestern U.S. an unbranded calf, cow, or steer, esp. an unbranded calf that is separated from its mother.

Anyway, I think Grampy's handlers are starting to realize that there's no way Caribou Barbie can win a debate against someone actually qualified to be VP. They had her hidden away so that she can cram as much as possible. Now that this econonimical crisis has blown up, they're using it to keep her and Grampy out of the spotlight.

My comments about McCain cancelling the debates:
1. The president SHOULD be able to concentrate on more than one thing at a time. (Bush was able to run a war, ignore Katrina victims, and still log the most vacation time of ANY US PRESIDENT EVER)
2. Isn't this exactly why we NEED to see them debate, so the American public can see and judge for themselves which candidate would be better suited to get us out of this mess since they would get the job in 40 days or so???

And if McCain thinks the economic issues are important enough to reschedule the debate, why did he go ahead with the Convention while Hurricane Ike victims had no where to go? That must not have been important enough to put his campaining on hold.

Stunner, good point. At least with Ike he could have done something useful. He could have handed out water and whathave you. But going back to Washington accomplishes zero. He's not on any of the committees actually handling this shit. All he can do is sit their and vote. He certainly didn't have to supposedly cancel his schedule to that …

Well, they did cancel the first night of the republican convention.

I suppose that means Grampy McCain thought it was important (politically at least).

No. 18 Stunner says:

Fine, he cancelled the first night - but those people suffered longer than just that one night. I'm not buying it. I think it all comes down to their camp seeing how terribly Palin has done in interviews and they don't want her to debate. Period.

And the only reason they cancelled the first night for Gustav was because they were terrified it would be another Katrina. When it wasn't, they went on with the festivities.

Is the view good from the cheap seats? This is sad, because I used to enjoy Dave. He, of all people, shouldn't be talking about sagging popularity and desperation. Looks like the running second to Leno for years on end thing is finally getting to him. Dissing John McCain? In 1,000 years, you could never hope to be in the same league as John McCain. And Olbermann…anyone who watches his show and considers it "news" should check themselves back in for another round of shock therapy. It's funny when a former sportscaster who somehow got a show on a second-rate cable network insults a former sportscaster (Palin) who has actually made something of herself. Olbermann is the very definition of "taking himself too seriously" and the fact that he will never realize how stupid he is makes it all the funnier.

Posted: Sep 25, 2008 at 2:24 pm
No. 24 em says:

Here's the thing–he didn't "diss" McCain. He called him a friggin hero. McCain "dissed" him by canceling, and then showing up on Couric's soundstage.

…and yeah, it's awesome when a nobody former sportscaster beauty queen happens to be in the right place at the right time to become a total pawn for the GOP. Gotta love it!

Me - difference between SNL and Letterman is that SNL is sketch comedy and Letterman is interview. McCain could go on and talk freely about whatever he wanted - Letterman is more than willing to let politicians get their ideas across in a serious manner.

The bottom line is that McCain lied. He said he was cancelling his schedule and heading back to Washington. When he was supposed to be flying back, he was doing an interview with Couric in NYC. He didn't fly to Washington until this morning.

oy…the sad reality is, the fact that someone has the ability to "make something of" him/herself says little to nothing about achievements of that person and how they relate to some greater good. to make something of oneself, you merely have to market yourself properly. there are people who are talented and earn the praise and attention of the public, and then there are people who…well, we're not really sure what they do. there are no notable talents, morals, values or selfless acts required. look at all the celeb people that we are endlessly entertained by who serve no other purpose than brain candy. those some people are immensely talented, it is not a requirement to be talented or gifted to be famous, you merely have to have the right promotion. some people deserve it, others merely bask the fact that people are info-hungry and like a good scandal.
it's amusing when voyeurism is mistaken for something more positive.

No one watches it for a political revelation, but Letterman will sit back and let a politician get out their talking points, if that's what they're pushing for. If McCain was worried that he'd be wasting a chance to convey a message just because Letterman has a comedic format, it was a mistake, because he would have been given a wide berth. Letterman's not an idiot, he knows that will get him more ratings than a 6 minute segment on something irrelevant. Also, he is a sympathetic host with a large left-leaning audience that might have, for the first time, taken McCain seriously. I think he wasted an opportunity. Now he just looks like a lying liar full of lies.

I will personally agree to contributed from my "sucked wallet" to help the less fortunate. Because I've been one. There will always be opportunists, rich and poor. Should I see the good people poor through no fault of their own slide through the cracks because of this? NO.
