David Letterman recently took time from trouncing all over the mavericky reputation of noted liar John McCain to earnestly beatify his recently deceased friend, Paul Newman. According to Letterman, who raced cars with Newman for years, the actor lived life in the best way possible: "He took care of other people."

He lived life well because "he took care of other people." That sounds about right. It jibes with my (unoriginal) rule that your merit as a person is measured by how you treat those less powerful than you, or those who can do nothing for you.
Something Letterman could do, if he were able to shut his mouth!

he donates money to children's charities and has formed his own that donates to lots of others.
just google "Letterman charities" and I'm sure you'll find something.

I have tried four times to post in this thread and dammit, I'm not giving up!
I wanted to say that I admire celebrities that don't perform charitable acts for a photo-op or publicity such as Paul Newman (R.I.P.) and David Letterman. They are the epitome of class.
On a side note, I'd like to thank Cord for using words that I have to look up in a dictionary and learn. Cord, you are the wind beneath my lexicon.
So sad, because was Newman the end of an era. They just don't make em like that anymore. Or they don't make enough of 'em.
