The Ferrell/Black comedy routine probably didn't help. Eddie's anticipated victory was the subtext of that whole musical number. That song cut so much deaper when Eddie lost.
It's like when Steve, George and Francis presented the Best Director award. They're Scorsese's best friends (at least professionally). The academy must have been pretty confident that Scorsese was going to win before they arranged to have the "Holy Trinity of 70's American New Wave" present the award, but what if Scorsese lost again? It would have been pretty awkward for all four directors… If you can call George Lucas a director, that is.
I thought it was awkward when the two "Devil Wears Prada" stars presented an award in which their movie was nominated, and then their movie lost. But it was the good kind of awkward coz the crazy costume designer that won was a Stanley Kubrick protégé.

I watched most of the ANS proceedings and overall I don't think the judge did a poor job. He let everyone have their say so that his ruling would hold up on appeal. Ok, he got teary at the end, but other than her heartless bitch of a mother, who didn't?
