Marauding Television

Just when you thought MTV couldn't become more of a soulless corporation without transforming into subplot fodder for a John Grisham novel, the former hipness barometer outdid itself in one week by:

1) Canceling TRL, and with it the last shred of reasoning behind calling the Viacom subsidiary a music station.

2) Signing a contract that would allow them to stay at their Times Square location (that really only made sense to inhabit when TRL was on the air) with a $35-per-square-foot rent increase.

3) Destroying the rainforest for the sake of the Real World/Road Rules Challenge show that no one knew was still on the air:

I watched part of the pilot episode of this. Their 'barbaric' conditions were better than my first apartment. And while one guy kept fretting about rations–we'll all starve if they keep breaking open coconuts when no one's hungry!–there seemed to be an abundant supply of alcohol. Not that I was surprised of course, but with large bags of rice, meat, coconuts, and tons of liquor, this is NOT Survivor. And I don't even give a shit about Survivor.

Also, there was obligatory sex in the ocean. I hope someone got a parasite.

I remember when Daria and Sifl & Olly were the best things on TV. Not only has MTV crapped out since then, but looking back, those shows weren't even very good.

MTV, you think you're all history-making and whatnot, but really, if you petered out after 30-ish years - maybe you're not so important after all?

I was just looking for video's on MTV the other day and the only thing they had was TRL, that was mostly talking. Now they will have none. It used to be 100 percent videos. I find it strange that they still have the Music video award show but they don't care enough to show the music videos anymore. That is how Madonna got famous, thru MTV.

The Dead Kennedy's said it best.

How far will you go
How low will you stoop
To tranquilize our minds with your sugar-coated swill

You've turned rock and roll rebellion
Into Pat Boone sedation
Making sure nothings left to the imagination

Sar I loved Daria! I also loved The State. MTV isn't even 30 yet, it is 27. I only know this because it debuted exactly two months after I did.

Now MTV only show trashy dating shows, trashy reality shows and trashy reality dating shows and on occasional Beyonce video.

I used to like 120 Minutes and live for Alternative Nation. Now, on the rare occasion they actually play a music video, pretty much only play pop.

There is a channel called MTV Hits that still plays videos but it is only on my digital cable. I won't pay to have it on more than one TV so I don't watch it very often.

I loved The State too! And Daria! And REMOTE CONTROL! I wouldn't be suprised if you would see actual penetration on those stupid dating shows. They're so foul.

Remote Control was AWESOME. The Jon Stewart Show was good too. Also loved Daria and Liquid Television.

now, that channel is nothing but crap. I tried (I really did!) to watch one of the "dating" shows, and I was so repulsed by the people, their attitudes, how they view each other…I honestly couldn't watch more than a few minutes.

I don't even know what channel MTV is on my cable system.

say what? BAM!!! I loved Martha Quinn! Alan Hunter used to wear IOU sweatshirts! Mark Goodman was a tad douchey for me–I think it was the hair

I think it's Nina BlackLung now.

Ooh! I met Alan Hunter! That's one of my like 4 celebrity encounters ever and it was entirely uneventful. He's local now, in the Big Salty 'Ham. I'm facebook friends with his wife though, and she spams the hell out of me.

Anyway - someone forgot to mention Kennedy. :)
And I guess Serena Altschul and that guy with the front-teeth-space don't actually matter, cause they did the news, right?

I wish The State would come the hell back.

i have some old State shows on vhs. Terrible quality but I pull them out every once in a while for a laugh. There are some people that just didn't get it (ie my husband–never thought it was funny). Oh well.
