We weren't even aware Repo! The Genetic Opera was actually going to the movie theaters, but some quick research confirms it's still set to release in November. If anyone actually has a desire to see Paris Hilton sing and act, save yourself $8 and just watch the clip above. And then you should probably look into seeing a therapist.

Because I couldn't make sense of what the "plot" of this horror musical was (I refuse to call it an opera),I decided to look it up on Wikipedia. This is the synopsis of the story. It's even worse than I thought:

An epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Panic erupts and scientists feverishly make plans for a massive organ harvest. Out of the tragedy, GeneCo, a multi-billion dollar biotech company, emerges. GeneCo provides organ transplantation for a profit. In addition to financing options, GeneCo reserves the right to implement default remedies, including repossession. For those who can't keep up with their organ payments, collection is the responsibility of "organ repo men", skilled assassins contracted by GeneCo, ordered to recover GeneCo's property by any means necessary.

At the heart of the story is Shilo Wallace, a 17 year-old girl with a rare blood disease. She has been kept locked up and protected in her house, where she is guarded from the outside world by her father, Nathan Wallace. While Shilo struggles with her wish to leave the house and experience the outside world, Nathan struggles with his secret job as the Repo Man, and more specifically, his next target, a woman named Blind Mag. Blind Mag, an opera singer, was a friend of Nathan's now-deceased wife, and is Shilo's godmother.

The Largo family, consisting of GeneCo president Rotti, his daughter Amber (Paris Hilton), and his two sons Luigi and Pavi, have their own plans. Rotti is dying, and the three siblings bicker and fight about who is to take the role as head of GeneCo. But, disapointed with his own children, Rotti takes an interest in Shilo.

The stories intertwine and merge at the GeneCo opera.

You know what broke my heart? When I found out that Sarah Brightman (fabulous opera/theatre singer, who was the original Christine in The Phantom of the Opera) was attached to this project. Apparently she plays Blind Mag. She will likely be the only good part of this piece of crap.

Oh, and when did the cute little girl from Spy Kids turn to crap movies?

And seriously, what is Anthony Head doing in this? I think that they must have done a bait and switch with him and Sarah… Madame Butterfly became Repo Man after the contracts were signed? It's the only way I can make it make sense.

I'm with Gadget girl on this. When I first read about this movie sometime back I thought it might be interesting. I like quirky stuff so I figure I'll give it a chance. It has a cast I like, Bill Moseley, Paul Sorvino and Anthony Head. Then I read it was going to have Paris fucking Hilton in it and my interest in the movie plummeted. I can not stand her. I'll still go check it out, I pray her part is minimal.

The thing with this kind of movie is, it isn't meant for the mainstream. It's a fringe movie that will find it's audience either by surprising everyone and being really good, or by being so god awful that it circles back around on itself that it becomes cult.

I'll take the rapist for 200. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

gadget, what i don't like is that they were probably deliberately cheap in order to garner immediate cult classic status. i think they knew exactly what they were doing. i think if we look forward to seeing this because it will be campy and oddly macabre, the terrorists will have won.

    that is all.

sar - i don't know if we can say "deliberate" on their going cheap. from what i can gather (which, admittedly, i'm not trying very hard, so not very much), the movie will be released limitedly in november, and then the dvd is supposed to be coming out in january. that, to me, means they're not expecting to make any money on this, and as such, probably couldn't get the financial backing. also, there are no star names in it that could even begin to attract money to it. the closest thing it has to an honest to goodness name, in this day and age, is paris hilton. think about that for a second. and then think about the bombs that her OTHER flicks were. studios just aren't going to back something when she's the brightest star you have. god, that pained me to type out, seeing as there are so many other people attached to it that i PERSONALLY see as bigger stars than her. the fact is, she's the most well known of them all, especially in that all important age-demographic of "kids who have no bills or responsibilities so right now they're the only ones in this economy that has money to just fling around".

The buzz I've been finding online has actually been positive. There are no pretentions of this thing becoming a mainstream hit. It doesn't appear to have ever been planned that way. Instead, it's a very dark, odd little piece that knows its audience wiil find it. Paris Hilton aside, I'm looking forward to it.

And I trust Sarah Brightman's judgement.

if you want to go by geek content, anthony stewart head is a mega-star. i've known about brightman almost as long as i can remember, but a lot of that had to do with being a chorus/drama geek in school. i'm pretty sure that none of my current friends would have a clue who she was, unfortunately.

however, for the market that hollywood tends to try and cater to, the youth, paris hilton it is.

also, i'm kind of stunned that the clip above didn't make me want to smash my computer. her cameo in veronica mars almost killed that show for me, and she was in it for less time than she was in that damned trailer.

I think it's an insult to cult movies to claim this amongst them. Rocky Horror has good performances in weird roles, but it's because the music was great too. Hedwig still has songs that get stuck in my head ("Some girls they have natural ease they wear it any way they please with their French flip curls and perfumed magazines Wear it up Let it down This is the best way that I've found to be the best you've ever seen…") whereas Repo is just…TERRIBLE. I'm sorry, there's no amusing way to state it. That song was the biggest load of crap a meth addict ever delivered to a studio exec.

wait, so, are we actually trying to say that this movie, which none of us have actually seen yet, is crap? amazing how you're all so psychic.

i don't know about you, but the plot of sweeney todd is just as absurd, and yet that was just turned into a movie that everyone was champing at the bit for, mostly because tim burton and johnny depp were attached. i dunno, i guess this movie just wasn't made with some of you in mind as viewers, which is fine. there are tons of movies out there that are made with a different focus group as the target. i'm probably excited for this because i go to fetish parties (i actually think i recognized some of the costuming from some of the designers i've worn), i'm a fan of ogre's, and i'm a HUGE buffy geek. this sort of movie was made for me. i'm the same person that you'd have to strap down and force to watch something like 27 dresses, so to each their own.

oh, and after watching the clip 3 times, yeah, the song DID get stuck in my head.

Speaking of geeky, I was at Comic Con and went to the Repo panel. And basically, Darren (the director) flat out stated that this movie is inappropriate and strange. So what better a strange and inappropriate casting choice than Paris Hilton? (Paris, true to form, was not quite in on the joke.)

yeah, cult classics do "just happen", but when i went to the premier of <hedwig and the angry inch at the gay and lesbian movie festival, you knew before it had ever been seen that it was going to be a cult classic.

of course, i could be completely wrong about repo (and to the above poster complaining about calling it an opera, the climax of the movie takes place at an opera, of which sarah brightman's character is the star, which is not at all that far fetched), but i AM still looking forward to the release of this movie, in order to see just what it really has in store for us.

Gadget girl, thank you for defending this movie. I'm amazed so many people could bash this movie without learning more about it or just because Paris is in it.
I admit, when I first heard that, my reaction was pretty similar. Did you know she wasn't even supposed to be cast as the role of Amber Sweet? Darren Lynn Bousman flat out refused to let her audition, but she wore him down and I trust his decision. That fact that she is playing a skanky, spoiled brat who is addicted to pain killers and and plastic surgery, is squabbling with her two brothers over running their dying fathers company, and thinks she is the best singer in the world-a.k.a is playing herself- is really just icing on the cake for me.
I hope some of you don't let your hatered of certain people kept you from watching this movie.

The director himself didn't want Paris Hilton in it, but after Paris Hilton auditioned and showed that she was more than capable of performing this role, Darren Bousman decided to cast her as Amber Sweet. Actors aren't picked at random. They have to be capable of depicting the character realistically and expressing the character's personality. Also, the movie is rated R. If you aren't able to deal with that material, then don't watch the movie. No need to criticize it for just part of the movie.
Besides, even great movies have ridiculous sounding plots. The Titanic? A romance on a ship about to sink? Yet it managed to be one of the most successful movies ever.

Paris Hilton isn't the star of this film. Your article is irrevelant because you didn't even take the time to find out about the movie. Instead, you judge it because of one clip from the film.

Did you take the time to look at Anthony Head's (Giles performance) in Legal Assasin? What about Seventeen by Alexa Vega? In fact, did you even know the plot of the movie? Doesn't seem like it.

Paris's screen time in minimal compared to a lot of characters. You aren't intelligent for pointing out that Paris isn't the best singer. You aren't witty. I don't like Paris Hilton, but I like everyone else involved in this movie.

Go talk to your therapist about how you hate someone because the media tells you to and how you have a problem removing your head from your ass.
