How Movies with Kirk Cameron Are Made

I stopped praying when in 1996. That's the year I prayed very hard for my parents to not get divorced, to no avail, subsequently prompting me to make the decision to stop thinking magic might help me in some way.

Turns out that God had a very good reason for forsaking me back then: she was saving up all her energy to make millions for a couple of Christian filmmakers!

“I’m not impressed with Hollywood in general. They don’t make a lot of movies that lift our standards and morality.” That’s what director Alex Kendrick told me in a telephone interview on Monday after his new movie "Fireproof" (IDP Films/Samuel Goldwyn) opened with a downright shocking $6.5 million opening weekend.

LA and New York are filled with talented film professionals who spend countless hours and millions upon millions of dollars making movies. The cost of development, production, a director, actors and marketing make the craft of filmmaking prohibitive. So how did a little church in Georgia score the 4th-best gross of the just-completed weekend?

The answer, according to director Kendrick, is prayer. “Before we shot a tough scene, we prayed. This movie was bathed in prayer.” He is serious.

Although Alex and his brother, co-writer and producer Stephen Kendrick, “grew up making silly movies in the backyard with a video camera,” they have no formal training in the business. They are both Associate Pastors at Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia, 3 hours south of Atlanta. They are in “the prayer business” full-time.

Fireproof, starring 80s heartthrob-cum-Christian right icon Kirk Cameron, tells the story of a fireman whose marriage is falling apart. I've not seen it, but I bet the couple stays together. With the help of the Lord, no doubt.

i read he wouldn't kiss his on-screen wife. They had him kissing his real life wife but it was projected as a shadow so everyone would believe he was kissing his movie wife. Didja get that?

Not all christians are the bad kind. There are plenty of people out there who have a deep faith that gives them comfort and they feel no need force their views on others.

That aside, you couldn't pay me to sit through this movie.

Well I can understand that Alice. I mean, the rest of the world doesn't sin and there aren't any gays.

I think that's just his defense mechanism kicking in. The dorky kid saying he doesn't want to play with the other kids because they're lame or mean or whatever, as if he was given the option anyway.

Thank God, our God that is, the only true God, for people like Kirk, who chose not to become someone he is not, just to make movies. Even if you don't believe, don't knock anyone's faith. There is a God, and He loves all of us. He hates the sin, but loves the sinner.

No. 15 Chelsea says:

Kayla– I don't buy people who get to pick and choose for the profession they chose. He chooses to be an actor and he chose to accept this role AFTER reading a script. I understand not wanting to kiss someone who isn't your wife, but I think God would understand. Does he hate Jim Cavezial (?) for portraying Jesus? C'mon, God is omnipotent, and Kirk's wife knows he loves her. It's a game, no different than any other part of acting.

I find my job offensive to my general way of life, in that I don't think people were meant to stare at computers and sit in cubicles filing paperwork for years on end, but I still do it. If you don't like an aspect of your profession then leave it. I'd get fired if I chose to stop filing aforementioned paperwork, or tried to pull my desk out of the mind numbing cubicle, so actors should get the same treatment. Sure, it's not really an apt metaphor but I hated Growing Pains so I'll rant if I want to.

Also, I'll knock someone's faith if they're going to get preachy about the things they find wrong with the world–gays, general sinning, etc. Nobody's perfect Kirk.

No. 16 say what? says:

Didn't Kirk Cameron get some actress fired from "Growing Pains" because she was a former playboy model and he didn't approve of that? so it seems that he was hating the sinner along with the sin.

what happened to "judge not lest ye be judged"?

that's one thing about (some) christians I don't understand. if they believe God will judge you, isn't it blasphemous for THEM to judge? or to consider themselves on the same "level" as God and therefore able to judge?

Kayla, you caught me on a bad day. Let me 'splain something to you. The type of faith this asshat - and you, by your own admission - promote is the most puerile, bigoted, nonsensical form of christianity imaginable. All of the good things christianity supposedly stands for (i.e. tolerance, charity, peace, etc.) is completely absent from your ceaseless condemnation and judgement of us sinners. In other words, blow me.

No. 18 say what? says:

um…question…

"our God, the only true God"…"our" meaning WHOSE?

if you claim "yours" is the only true God, then your comment of "don't knock anyone's faith" kind of rings hollow.

Not to be all preachy but because your parents divorced isnt a reason to stop praying. You ever think that maybe God has a bigger plan or maybe someone needed "magic" before you or was more deserving?

Maybe is kinda right. There are plenty of other quality reasons no to pray. For example, perhaps you just don't believe in nonsensical superstition.

No. 25 chezsan says:

hey, anyone remember Jude Law? if I were Kirk's wife, I'd feel better about him not kissing someone else than being all like, "But, baby, it's a part of my job! I just got to kiss her!" Plus, do you think that a guy who prays before each take is really going to object to Kirk not wanting to kiss a woman not his wife? Me neither.

And, wow, Cord, thanks for relegating anyone who prays to the status of "magic believer". You're not even just picking on crazy-ass fundies this time! I thought that your prejudice couldn't get a whole lot worse than your constant attacks on conservatives, but it did. Congrats.

And by the way, it's called free will. I have a feeling that if God dictated every action, no one would get divorced, no one would get an abortion, no child would be abused. But, God doesn't. So instead of complaining about God never letting anyone do anything we want to do, we get to complain about people doing exactly what they want to do, regardless of how anyone else feels about it.

Any literal belief in the teachings of Christianity is to believe in magic…pure and simple. It is…at its most dignified…a theory. It relies upon an unprovable belief…i.e. ghosts, the easter bunny, witches, vampires, etc.

Religion is an outdated method of teaching people right from wrong. It is no longer necessary to believe in a higher power to do right on this planet. Through social interaction and teaching compassion we learn to treat others as we would wish to be. All good will is not inspired out of the fear of God. Seems so much more sincere this way…(I kid)

Nobody who has faith should be persecuted for such…but it is cord's right to express his lack of belief just as it was yours to spout to him that a GOD he doesn't believe in was kind enough to GIVE his parents the free will to split up.

Every time I hear "love the sinner, hate the sin" I can't help but think of that as a bald-faced lie that nobody believes. Even the person speaking that tired cliche.

One who loves the "sinner" shouldn't need to express that in words. Demonstrating it without judgement in acts of compassion, love, and respect do a lot more.

I've never been one to advertise my spiritual beliefs. They are mine. If anyone asks what I believe in, I'll tell them as much as they ask for. But I am not one to preach or prescribe my theology (or lack of it) to anyone. I've had too many people (well-intentioned and otherwise) do it to me.
