Corey Feldman? Really? That's The Best You Could Do?

johnlennonbed2.jpgcoreypeta2.jpg

Seeing Jessica Simpson prancing around in that "Real Girls Eat Meat" shirt made me temporarily go vegetarian just to spite her, but now that Corey Feldman has disgraced the John Lennon photo above in the name of PETA, I'll give Jess a pass.

Yep, animals die for my ham sandwich. Animals die to feed tigers and lions as well. Do you have a problem with them eating meat as well? Should the all the predators of the world eat tofu? Really?

FTR, hummus is good (red pepper being my fave), but nothing beats a well roasted rack of lamb.

I don't want to start an argument about all this. But you have to let other people make their own choices. I would never tell you what to eat, please don't tell me what to eat.

Mitzi, if you want to be a vegetarian or vegan that is your choice but get off your high horse and don't try and tell me what to do. I don't tell you what music to listen to, what books to read or what political party to vote for. I expect the same courtesy in return. Just because you have an option on something doesn't make you right and everyone else wrong.

I will agree with you on one thing, hummus is tasty, but so is bacon.

I bet bacon hummus would rock!

I'm a veg too for ethical and environmental reasons. I have dogs and cats, I feed them meat, just as I would wolves and tigers if I had them. It's natural for them. They NEED it. I'm not a carnivore (humans are anatomically herbivores), therefore I don't need meat.

One hallmark of many vegetarians is their poor understanding of science, reflected in the comments from Your Mama. How many herbivores are born with sharp canines? And what vegetables are they used to tear through exactly? My wife was a vegetarian for years and was pretty unhealthy although she believed she was extremely healthy. A few months after eating meat, she realized just how much healthier she was and regretted the years of vegetarianism that deprived her of protein natural to human development.

I'd actually love to hear what PETA has to say about it.

My opinion is being vegetarian is dumb and ignorant if it's for "moral reasons". There's nothing really moral about it. my opinion.

Alice, here's another source that explains the differences in certain physical characteristics. I had always thought we were omnivores too but now I think that we are that way by choice and have adpated over the years to accomodate more dense proteins. Either way, we don't need meat to survive which is the point I was trying to make, though somewhat clumsily. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Are_.....herbivores

Alex… How kind of you to insult 'many vegetarians' to try and make your point. We have canines (ours are much shorter and less sharp than true carnivores) but we also have grinding molars. There are many sources of veggie protein that are quite good and healthful. So you don't think a veg diet can be healthy? I'm sure vegans and vegetarians all over the world, including some professional athletes would beg to differ. Regardless, you enjoy your meat and I'll enjoy my veggies and let's just agree to disagree.

Your Mama, you said it loud and clear "I THINK we are that way by choice". Very simple, you think that's true. That's ok. It's not true, but you are more than entitled to believe it.

Just because you found a link on VRG doesn't make it gospel. Do some googling, you'll find a variety of opinions and discussion of omnivore vs herbivore but most agree (I haven't read them all) that we have the digestive systems of herbivores.

Damn, you meateaters are hostile today!

    No. 27 Alice says:

Mama, I did some googling. Most don't agree. But any anatomist will tell you we're omnivores.

I realise you want to make your point a scientific one, but you're going to struggle. We're built to eat and digest meat, veggies and grain. If anything, the one thing we aren't built for is milk drinking. But that's another story for another time.

Why not just stick to the argument that it's what you choose for yourself because that's how you want to live. You need no other argument that "it is my choice". At least that would be an argument that can both respect and not argue with.

Hear hear Killorn, I have always been more of a Haim fan myself. I met Corey Feldman once in person and I was so estastic, it was at that point the best day of my life. He was married to that Vanessa person at the time, she was so yellow in person I thought she might keel over and die. He seemed so nice and sweet, and took a picture with my teenage self (it only cost $10). He was gracious enough to sign my VHS of Dream A Little Dream, and a photo from License to Drive featuring my darling Corey Haim. I have all those memories packed away somewhere with my extensive collection of NKOTB merch. The same day I also met Christopher Atkins of Blue Lagoon fame. That made my lifetime. Blue Lagoon = Best movie ever.

I'm a vegetarian but don't shove it down people's throats. I used to be one of those vegetarians.. I am no more. You know why?

I learned that spewing slogans like "meat is murder" and being on the fringe only hurt my cause and convinced less people to give it a try. If the goal for PETA and others like it is to lessen the suffering of animals then they are not succeeding. They should offer support, recipes and samples. Lots of literature that has a good scientific base. Drop the cheezy nudie photos and corny celeb endorsements (like this one) and just be good people. If you're kind and gentle and show peace in every action that you take you will meet those goals. If you promote better living conditions, more ethical means of slaughter and harvesting of dairy and eggs, and ways to minimize waste, the animals will suffer less. I know that "they are not ours" and all that.. But that is just not how mainstream America sees it.

I used to be one of them.. I made the choice to stop eating meat on my own. I had to come to a place where I was interested in trying it. I had to have the motivation within and the will and desire to made different choices. I know that not everyone has that so I'm not going to make others feel bad for not having evolved past that point.

There are a lot of injustices in the world. Genocide, rape, murder, starvation, war, pollution, genital mutilation, abuse, imperialism, and the list goes on..

In the end, I wouldn't have touched John Lennon with a 10 foot poll. It's just not in good taste. But vegetarians must rethink the message that they give off.. If I didn't feel personally icky about eating something dead after 6 years of not eating meat I know I would be turned off to the veggie message.. And I haven't donated to PETA in years because I'm sick of being labeled for hanging around their kind.
