In November of last year, Time predicted that Oprah’s endorsement of Barack Obama would not help the senator in his bid to be the President. Almost six months later, it turns out that Oprah’s support produced 10,000 volunteers and a wave of donations for Obama’s campaign, and he won two out of the three states in which the talk show host stumped for him. Although Oprah’s assistance alone cannot a president make, apparently it can prove Time magazine wrong.
But the so-called “O2 effect” has not been a symbiotic relationship. While Obama’s camp asserts he has fared well from his relationship with Ms Winfrey, she can’t say the same, according to new research from Fordham University.
… the aging empress of TV has paid a price for getting into the dirty business of politics with and for her man Barack. By August last year, a CBS poll found her favorable rating had plunged from 74% to 61%, still twice as good as the president but nearly a 20% drop.
Around Thanksgiving she announced that not only was she supporting Obama, but she would campaign with him and we’d see if her political recommendation carried as much weight as her book recommendations. Oprah’s political travels produced a media feeding frenzy and a publicity bonanza with women routinely fainting in the front row.
But 10 days after the campaign media explosion her favorable rating had dropped further to 55% and her unfavorable ratings for the first time climbed to 1 in 3.
Of course, correlation does not equal causation, but this is interesting. Has Oprah really overstepped her bounds, or is this a natural downturn for someone who has been at the pinnacle of their success for many years now?
I think it makes sense, not all of Oprah’s fans are going to be Obama-supporting Democrats. I’m going to guess that some her fans like Hillary and McCain too so naturally her endorsing Obama will in a sense “alienate” some of her viewers, but they’ll get over it. Who you vote for does not determine everything about you.
Similarly, if Johnny Depp endorsed McCain my approval of Depp would drop… for now. But I’d get over it becasue I respect Depp for other reasons.
Moral of my story is that I don’t think Oprah has anything to worry about.
Uhm, I would so then not like Johnny Depp. Like I don’t like whats his name from My Name IS Earl after I found out he was a sciencetologist. Just being honest.
The change as well re Oprah doesn’t surprise-a large population of her fans are middle england middle aged white woman…
O is black but not reeeally black..
i would support johnny depp if he killed a homeless man naked. johnny depp would be naked. not the homeless man.
have a heart, people.
what do you think they are saying to each other up there? this makes for a great caption page! i wanna see more celebrities get involved in politics, standing up for something, like their country?
i wonder what kimora lee thinks about this
I think her ratings have dropped because her topics have drastically dropped in quality. I mean c’mon people, she had the pregnant transgender on her show recently. Its not a miracle, its a woman who had her boobs removed and takes hormones.
This the same woman who though Dr. Phil was a also a great idea.I sat her judgment in question
i also wonder what kimora lee simmons thinks about this.
and marilyn monroe.
oh, and shirley temple? i watched her new show keeping up with the temples, and that shit is off the chain!!
i wish someone would kill dr. phil right in his sperm bank.
what a jackass that guy is.
Kimora Lee Simmons just came on my television, where’s Elle. HEY ELLE, she’s on the Style Network. Now where is my remote…
Don’t forget Elvis.STM I am still laughing @ #8. Does anyone wonder if Elvis is rolling in his grave knowing Pricilla & Lisa Marie are scientologist now? Looks like Cord might be one now too with all the scientologist ads going on. WTF??
Mae: Sigh, I agree with you lol! It was only a woman who decided to be a man but had not got a dick and still had her vagina…
It’s no miracle… :)
her populatity has dropped because she has made the assumption that we all want to participate in her cross marketing adventure. A portion of every show is devoted to her other show The Big Give and then a segment on her Ehhardt Tolle book. How arrogant.
Cord, we all know this ‘Oprah backlash’ was gonna happen…I’m sure you knew too…next
Oprah needs to just step down, shut up and tell me about the next Ken Follett book, not tell me about her political ideology.
