In November of last year, Time predicted that Oprah’s endorsement of Barack Obama would not help the senator in his bid to be the President. Almost six months later, it turns out that Oprah’s support produced 10,000 volunteers and a wave of donations for Obama’s campaign, and he won two out of the three states in which the talk show host stumped for him. Although Oprah’s assistance alone cannot a president make, apparently it can prove Time magazine wrong.

But the so-called “O2 effect” has not been a symbiotic relationship. While Obama’s camp asserts he has fared well from his relationship with Ms Winfrey, she can’t say the same, according to new research from Fordham University.

… the aging empress of TV has paid a price for getting into the dirty business of politics with and for her man Barack. By August last year, a CBS poll found her favorable rating had plunged from 74% to 61%, still twice as good as the president but nearly a 20% drop.

Around Thanksgiving she announced that not only was she supporting Obama, but she would campaign with him and we’d see if her political recommendation carried as much weight as her book recommendations. Oprah’s political travels produced a media feeding frenzy and a publicity bonanza with women routinely fainting in the front row.

But 10 days after the campaign media explosion her favorable rating had dropped further to 55% and her unfavorable ratings for the first time climbed to 1 in 3.

Of course, correlation does not equal causation, but this is interesting. Has Oprah really overstepped her bounds, or is this a natural downturn for someone who has been at the pinnacle of their success for many years now?

I think it makes sense, not all of Oprah’s fans are going to be Obama-supporting Democrats. I’m going to guess that some her fans like Hillary and McCain too so naturally her endorsing Obama will in a sense “alienate” some of her viewers, but they’ll get over it. Who you vote for does not determine everything about you.

Similarly, if Johnny Depp endorsed McCain my approval of Depp would drop… for now. But I’d get over it becasue I respect Depp for other reasons.

Moral of my story is that I don’t think Oprah has anything to worry about.

I think her ratings have dropped because her topics have drastically dropped in quality. I mean c’mon people, she had the pregnant transgender on her show recently. Its not a miracle, its a woman who had her boobs removed and takes hormones.

her populatity has dropped because she has made the assumption that we all want to participate in her cross marketing adventure. A portion of every show is devoted to her other show The Big Give and then a segment on her Ehhardt Tolle book. How arrogant.

Oprah needs to just step down, shut up and tell me about the next Ken Follett book, not tell me about her political ideology.
