Argh, there are worse things in the world than smoking! (war, pollution, rape etc) I’m not saying its good - I stopped when I discovered I was pregnant and never started again - but my best friend (who is one of the best people I have ever known by the way)carried on, cutting down from 20 to 5 a day, and her daughter is wonderful. jus sayin.

What is SIDS, I mean I know what it stands for and all that, but IMHO it really sounds like a bunch of baloney. Like Dr.’s don’t know what happened, that the baby just stopped breathing? I think there are reasons why babies die but that SIDS is just a scare tactic. Like my son slept in bed with me for his first 3 months and it made life so much easier for all…and then when I told people they freaked out “aaahhh SIDS”!!! And while I am being honest here, I had *gasp* a glass of wine when I was pregnant too…on more than one occasion (in the last trimester). If we all were being watched constantly I don’t think we’d all throw stones.
Just sayin’.

There was actually a study conducted about 15 years ago about SIDS. When the doctor’s performed autopsies on (if I remember correctly) 300 infants who had died of SIDs, they found a spinal mis-alignment of the same vertebrae in something like 90% of the children. The nerves that were compressed by the mis-alignment led to the lungs.

A glass of wine and sleeping with your baby does not cause SIDS. Nicotine binds itself to receptors in a part of the brain that regulates breathing during sleep. Thus, this part of the brain can be damaged and not fully develop when the baby is in gestation. Sleeping with your baby actually helps to regulate their breathing.
There have been many European studies done on this and they have all come to same conclusion, Nicotine causes most cases of SIDS. You can believe it or not. Scientific proof is not throwing stones… it’s simply stating facts.

Two more things you might find interesting. The illustrious tobacco industry has went to extreme lengths to keep this information suppressed from the American public. And The US has one of the few cultures that strongly suggests you should not sleep with your newborn. We used the co-sleeping method from day one. That combined with nursing made for many peaceful, fully rested nights. I highly recommend both.

I meant that if we were being scrutinized we’d not throw stones. I absolutely believe that the science on SIDS (with regards to smoking etc.) is strong, it’s not like I have my head in the sand. While were takin’ facts here the SIDS rate is twice as high in African American babies, but we certainly would not tell African Americans not to have babies. Correlation does not equal causation, that’s all I sayin’ yo. I’m not trying to start a flame war here.

Amen! Although obviously I’ve stopped at some point with at least a couple of mine, seeing as how they’re teens.

It will RUIN, I REPEAT RUIN, your marriage.” Actually, it just makes you more sneaky and creative. We didn’t select her. Another doctor told us that if we fight in front of our daughter she would become a Lesbian. I was pumped up on painkillers and told him I really didn’t think it worked that way and asked if he was speaking from a personal experience. We didn’t select him either… but did choose someone from the same practice. The first guy was so old he had forgotten about it the next time we saw him in the office.

I am glad that you selected your Pediatrician wizely. Mothers know best. There is a reason for that saying.

It’s always more fun to tell people to go to the hell while on pain killers. It not only kills pain, it also kills the brain filter.
