A few Thanksgivings ago, my Grandparents were down from Ireland for a visit. We all made the trek to Butte, Montana for a slapdash family reunion of sorts over the holiday. It was great - generations of my family from all over the country, gathered together for a Thanksgiving meal.

My Grandfather, a cantankerous old coot, was always best known for spirited language and a hearty debate. He and my Uncle, who had recently grown a beard, were arguing about the state of American politics at the table while everyone was seating themselves. The table grew quiet as we waited for my Grandfather to make the Thanksgiving toast. He rose slowly, looked around at the generations he had spawned proudly, then pointed at my Uncle and shouted in an Irish Brogue "JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE HAIR AROUND YER MOUTH NOW DOESN'T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO TALK LIKE A CUNT".

About the Sarah Palin thing, yes, it's true she didnt answer the questions directly, she took a indirect approach and said the things the people would want to hear, she got up there and attempted to 'sell' if you will, the McCain/Palin campaign. Now, according to dems she is a idiot and she cant answer questions correctly. According to me she took advantage of her time up there to spread her message about things the American should care about.

Here's the thing Matt–After the first debate, both side (but more McCain) got flack for sticking to talking points and not really answering questions. Then of course jump forward and we all know they did it again in the second debate. The point is, you'd think that after seeing the criticisms the candidates were getting for that, Palin would have tried to do what she said she was going to do– speak straight to the American people, and whoever Joe Six Pack is. She didn't do that at all, and sicne she IS inexperienced it was a critical error because it made it seem that she didn't have any answers for the questions, not that she wanted to 'sell'.

And yes, I know that was just a giant hodgepodge of run-on sentences towards the end. Sometimes I use commas as a crutch

It's a bit verbose, and is college instead of income. However, you said that the majority of dems are lower class and the lower class are typical uneducated. ergo, dems are uneducated. Is it possible that those that are lower income are more negatively impacted by government action? You cite Clinton's supporters, and those of Obama - in both cases, were these not Democratic candidates following Republican terms in office? Is it possible that the "lower class" were mobilized for change due to the impact of the prior leaderships? 25% is a pretty significant number, that would make a blip anywhere in terms of support…

Also - I'm not sure that it's fair to equate lower income with uneducated…maybe in terms of formal education, but I think it's a fallacy (and perhaps even arrogant) to say that a lack of formal education makes one unintelligent.

Well, I guess I feel this way– If you make your money off the backs of the lower class, then when times are hard you can shove it and pay more to bring the economy out of ruin. So yeah, I think it's fair that they pay more.

They already do pay more many than the rest of us…thats why we have tax brackets. So even though the rich are already required to pay more than everyone else, its still fair to stack more on them?

Here is the thing about money. That 35th K is a whole lot to someone who makes 35K, not so much to someone who makes 250K. Is it really that bad to say, hey, you, go buy an extra box of mac and cheese and I will pay a bit more in taxes? And I feel like "paying out the ass" sort of implies that they are going without. They are not going without.

I feel like there are all these assumptions you make that don't jibe with my personal experience. I work in NY. I will tell you that a barista in Midtown works just as hard, albeit in a different capacity, as a stock broker. And don't think for a minute that a lot of the wealthy weren't born rich, sent to private schools and know no student loans, and got their jobs because of connections. It seems to me that we have vastly different experiences with people. Do I know some lazy asses who didn't work hard in school and make no money? Yep. And some lazy asses who bank? Yep. People who worked hard and make no money? Check. People who worked hard and make oodles? Yessiree. If you want a stronger country, shore up the weakest link. I believe that starts with education, but that is for another time.

@ Matt - I think it's a fundamental disagreement of how society should work. For me, a country should work together to ensure that everyone is as okay as possible, and has access to the same opportunities as those with means. On a personal level, there may be a flavour of socialism. From your perspective, though, look at it this way - a functioning society will have less of a lower class, causing a lesser strain on the resources of the nation. The economy is strengthened, more people can contribute more resources, and those with wealth will be able to acquire more due to the strength of the nation and it's population. Additionally, the nation is stronger on the world stage due to their economic means, and there is less civil discord within the borders. I understand that taxation is a concern for those with wealth, but it's a sort of…short term pain for long term gain? Does that make sense? I'm not sure, it's still early for me. :)

Taxes also fund the things that all demographic groups support - education, infrastructure, defense. More people having more opportunity, and therefore making more money, will mean more wealth for the nation as a whole. Obviously there are people that abuse the system, and that will always be the case. I'm not sure that it's fair to judge an entire segment of the population (by your estimation, 25%) based on the attitudes of what is probably a minimal number of persons.

C.O. - Do they not pay thier taxes based of off what they make? I pay my taxes based of what I make, when I get a raise, the amount I pay in taxes goes up. So lets say Im one of the rich, I should then have to pay MORE because of I was able to get a good education, get a good job and make a good amount of money?
