Most people who are against plastic surgery are just for natural beauties instead, which is probably harsher because that you have NO control over. Consciously or subconsciously, we all judge (and are judged) by what we look like, so plastic surgery is a strategic (albeit expensive) life move. If it was 100% safe, significantly cheaper (ie. plastic surgery like a trip to the dentist) I'd probably have a little somethiing-something done too.
Plus, you can twist it so that it's not viewed as being shallow - getting surgery is showing a unattachment to your looks by being open to change them….
