Charlton Heston, whose career included over 100 films and a stint as the president of the National Rifle Association, passed away last night at his home in Beverly Hills. Though his family will not comment on Heston's cause of death, it is presumed the 84-year-old died of complications from Alzheimer's disease.

Maybe he accidentally shot himself. I'm sorry! I'm going to hell, I know.
good riddance.
Are his hands cold yet?
Can we pry the gun away now?
MAY HE REST IN PEACE. AND THOSE WHO MADE FUN OF THE ALZEIMER'S DISEASE MAY THEY FIND REPENT IN THEIR HEART. RESPECT OUR ELDERLY PEOPLE AND RESPECT THOSE WHO SUFFERS FROM SOME OF KIND OF DISEASE THAT HAVE NEVER FOUND ANY TREATMENT TO STOP THE DISEASE.
Goodnight gunny man.
That's really sad. I love that everyone is going to focus on the gun thing and ignore his activity in the civil rights movement and how he got in big trouble with the movie studios for being the first actor to portray a man in love with a woman of another race–he insisted on it. But let's just focus on the stuff he did as sick old man, shall we?
Jus- no one is making fun of "the Alzheimer's Disease". I may need to 'find repent in my heart' for mocking your command of the written word though. If english is your second language, then sorry. If it isn't- go back to school. And to Crazazy- that is cool, did not know that about Charlton Heston (put his vest on- remember that song?)
so it's ok to make fun of someone dying because they liked guns? that's just stupid.
He supported your right to bear arms so that YOU could protect yourself from all of the nuts out there in the world. Do you actually think criminals would respect gun control laws?
Butterpecan, you essentially answered Deimos's rhetorical question. Heston supported gun policies that pave the way for your city being like Dodge City as everyone carries a firearm for protection "from all the nuts out there." Many people regard that kind of thinking as "just stupid."
But yes, as Crazazy says, there was more to Heston. He once marched with MLK. And he was a good actor.
RIP Moses!
i don't see anything wrong with owning guns, i own more than a dozen myself. the government gave us the right to carry guns so that we could not only protect ourselves from "nuts" but so we could also protect ourselves from our government. the people that set up our country wanted to make sure that the government never had to much power over the people. they knew that one day our governement would become corrupt so they gave us the means to defend our freedom when that day came. guns not only kill, they save lives.
So basically, you're just preparing for anarchy?
Thank you meep. You said it too perfectly.
every government fails eventually. sad but true story.
I just figure if society ever deteriorates to the point where I'm looking to vigilante-mob the government with a dozen guns, there's probably no one minding the gun store, anymore.
better to plan ahead, everyone will be raiding the gun store when the shit hits the fan.
True 'nuff. Don't they sell guns at Walmart now? Cause then I could just one-stop shop the whole looting thing. Get my canned goods, guns and ammo to really hunker down and enjoy the revolution.
actually walmart just stopped selling guns, bastards.
But it was so convenient to be able to get canned beans, diapers, and a .44 in the same stop. Now I have to load ALL the kids back in the minivan, drive halfway across town, and try to keep them from touching the displays at Big Mike's Gun Emporium? No thanks.
i know, what a pain in the ass. i know i'm coming off as a gun nut but i do think it's very important for people to have the means to defend themselves. how many murder victims would still be alive if they would have had a gun to defend themselves with? the problem with guns is that alot of people use and keep them stored irresponsibly. guns are not toys and should be kept in a safe location away from childrens' reach. trigger gaurds should always be used if you're going to keep a loaded gun in the house.
I respect your opinion. My problem is that I think any gun stored properly, locked away behind a combination lock or with a key put away in a different location in the house, would be totally inaccessible when it's needed. Most murder victims don't have time to get the key, get into the room where the guns are locked safely away, disengage locks, remove the guns, remove the safeties, load them (with ammo ideally stored in a third location), and THEN defend themselves.
they could do what i do… i keep the gun on my bedstand and the loaded clip under the mattress. if i need it all i have to do is reach down and grab the clip, pop it in the gun and then chamber it. of course i do also have some great hunting knives downstairs for when i can't get to my guns. my house has been broken into enough times that i'm always prepared for anything now.
I'm much more a fan of anti-burglary things like alarms. I don't think I would have the balls to knife someone. And maybe guns are more stigmatized here, but I also feel like the stress of sleeping with a gun beside my head and a clip under the mattress would counter-act any peace of mind I would get from it being there.
What are you going to do with that arrangement when you have kids? I'm honestly just curious… I don't know anyone who actually owns a gun, it's definitely different mindsets.
i'll probably do the same thing my parents did with me. they took me out when i was 3 and handed me a gun. they explained to me what guns are used for and then helped me shoot a watermelon. after i saw first hand what a gun could do they explained to me that i shouldn't touch guns because it'll hurt people. i saw what it did to the watermelon so i never touched their guns after that. kids see guns on TV and think they're cool but it's very rare that they get to see first hand what a gun can do to someone.
as for the gun by my head, i sleep alot easier knowing it's there. i might still get murdered but at least i'll have a chance to fight back.
Maybe I'm naive, but to me home ≠ guns. I can't wrap me head around it. I guess different countries, different cities, different families, different mindframes. I can barely handle the danger of having an oven in my home… I'm always worried it's left on, or something's too close to the burner and will catch fire. I can't imagine worrying if the safety is on properly, if my child REALLY understood the dangers, or if their friends were similarly well-guided. But then again, I have never needed to defend myself in a way I couldn't do with just my hands.
Is crime a big problem where you live, dei?
i could see why people would be uncomfortable with guns. i was raised in the country so i had alot of experience with guns. it's all in how you were raised. i feel more comfortable with a gun by my side and some people think i'm just some stupid redneck because of it, but that's ok. different strokes for differnet folks. :)
not at my current place but the place i just moved from was horrible. i got broken into 6 times, that's not counting how many times they broke into my car. someone stole my cd played and my tires while i was at church! i got tired of being a victim so i decided to defend myself.
Detective Robert Thorn, may you rest in peace and enjoy a drink with Sol Roth in heaven.
6 times, wow. Through all my apartments, my childhood home, and my lockers at school, I haven't been broken into 6 times. Maybe I just don't have nice stuff. Screw it, yes I do.
I've been lucky enough, I guess, to grow up where crime isn't a huge problem… or any crime that does happen, has no weapons involved so a gun would only escalate things. I definitely agree it is all in how you were raised. I don't think you're a redneck, and if zombies or anarchy do come in our lifetimes, can I come stay at your house? I'll bring canned goods, and promise to stay away from your oven.
Deems I know you aren't a redneck! Lonnie took me out to my sisters on Easter & taught me how to shoot. He tried to teach the kids but they wanted no part of it. he didn't push them to shoot but he did go over gun saftey with them. i was scared of them until then.
all hags are welcome at my house when the zombies come. after all, i can't shoot all my guns by myself. ;)
yay pp! i love shooting, it's relaxing and i get to take out cans. cans are bastards, true story.
That stump at my sisters was a bastard too. I only missed it once out of 12 rounds. You would be proud. I also rode on a dirt bike that Lonnie got Nash.Neither one of the kids would ride but I had a ball. We had a redneck Easter.
Don't forget the Aliens deems. Area 51 is right around the corner from you isn't it?
area 51 doesn't have aliens, it's an amusment park. they want you to think aliens are there so dubya can have the rollercoaster all to himself. he gets a U under plays wells with others.
damn, deimos. i'm a little scared of you now.
when the shit goes down, i'm packing up my car and driving to your house.
So what about the three year old girl in the news today who shot herself in the head?
Guns = Home doesn't make much sense to me, either.
I saw a guy the other day taking his three or four year old boy out hunting - they were dressed in their hunter fatigues ready to go hunting.
And I thought to myself - whatever your thoughts are on guns and gun laws, you don't let a three year old drive a car, have sex, use a chainsaw, or any number of things that are really beyond their motor skills or which might endanger them.
A three or four year old should not be using guns or be heavily exposed to gun use, in my opinion.
If you want to teach a child how to safely handle guns, wait until they are older. No need to put one in an infant's hands. That's what bothers me about the pro-gun movement they don't seem to GET that small children should not be shooting stuff up. We don't let them drink wine, we dont' let them drive a car, but we let them kill things?
I dunno, it's all beyond me.
Mags
I always am sickend by the deaths of innocent children. Whether by an abusive parent's hand, or any other neglegent action on the part of those who should know better.
I was going to post a comment earlier
today likening the danger of guns to the danger of cars. I didn't have all the thoughts formed out right in my head.
We don't let 3 year olds drive cars. Some idiots let the small children sit in their laps while they are driving cars, (I'm looking at YOU, Britney Spears) but for the most part, we all make certain that our children of driving age know the responsibility and the repercussions of what that driving priviledge means. We as a generally don't let the children start with the driving until 16.
We all know there are saftey precautions that go along with driving privledges. We all know the devastating consequences of folks that disregard the respect that comes with the driving privilege.
We teach them through drivers education and training, how to operate that motor vehicle.( And there is a lot of nagging.) :-)
My favorite ex-husband owns guns. He made certain that I knew all sorts of things. I can feild strip any weapon. I had to take a test to be a gun owner, and had to show a hands on knowledge just like a driver's test.
I don't own any guns currently, (he got them in the divorce, and now I choose to spend my current money on other things, like shoes)but I remember the target ranges. I had so much fun!!! I am a great shot. I learned how to defensively handle an intruder should that ever happen to have the misfortune of picking MY house.
I think that grouping ALL the pro-gun movement
together and thinking that ALL supporters of the second amendment to the constitution believe that letting babies handle weapons is o.k. is like saying that ALL young mothers are like Britney Spears and they will ALL let their babies sit on their laps while they are driving.
Give us grown ups some credit. Set aside the hyberbole for a minute and realize that we are grown ups, and take it seriously.
