America, America, This Is You

There's the political cesspool that is Washington, D.C., and then 100 miles away is the real melting pot of intelligent minds in The Middle of Nowhere, Virginia. Lovely reader Ruby Jackson snapped these shots in the area and passed them along to us as a morning boost. Who are these people and why are they allowed to breed?

Says Ruby:

I was recently in semi-rural Virginia, about 100 miles outside DC near Luray, and saw this display in front of a farm. Not sure what the significance of the rocks are, but it was disturbing, as well as typical sentiment for that area. Enjoy!

As a resident of what is characterized as "rural" area, very near to where this display is located, and I find it just a little disturbing that myself and others living in the same area are all too often lumped into the same category as this bigot. Be it lack of education on the individual running for office, or just plain old racism and hatred, the people who make these sorts of statements do little to further other peoples views of rural communities. More often than not the media chooses to represent these communities and those who live there, by showing crap like this and calling it a shared sentiment - basing their viewpoints on the few who behave like the characteristic "red-neck".

This is interesting. I am a native of central Virginia, and have no less than 3 rural counties that touch on my city. However, I never heard the thing about the "war of Northern Aggression" until less than a week ago. Here I have encountered the term again, although I'm not unfamiliar with that type of person in the least.

Unfortunately the folks who don't agree with terming it the "Civil War" (because, as the argument goes, it wasn't civil) usually end up having very backward ideas, even if they do have a factual understanding of history. By that I mean that the war was not fought over slavery, but rather the South's desire to become a separate country and regain economic independence. The North attacked, the South defended, and lost. Believe it or not, those who still mourn that fact don't wish they were able to own slaves - if you know the facts of the Civil War then you should know that only a tiny fraction of Southerners could afford or even needed slaves. It's just this mindless Northern hatred that's been passed on down their poverty-stricken family line.

Skaði, you don't happen to live in Lynchburg do you? Or do I remember you saying something about being from Charlottesville? I'm a L'Burg girl myself.

You do have a valid point in the fact that slavery was not the reason for the civil war. The abolition of slavery was designed to undercut the southern economy which was, as Stoney correctly pointed out, built on the backs of the slaves. Yes, only a small portion of southerners could afford slaves, but those were the ones who were making all the money - much like now where the top 1% controls 90% of the world's wealth.

However, it's important to realize that the slaves were not freed for wholly humanitarian reasons - they were ultimately freed for economic reasons. Which is further proof that people generally only do the morally right thing when it's financially beneficial to them (like charitable donations for tax right offs).

Couple of things: First, janice and Stoney (and others here) are correct. Slavery wasn't the cause of the Civil War persay, it was states' rights. However, the south chose to start this war over the states right to slavery. So you don't have to stretch very far to see how important the slavery issue was to the Civil War. And let's please not repeat history–on an old Josh Brolin article here there was a huge fight (Civil War pt. II?) about this and it didn't get resolved anyway.

Most importantly, can we have a MG party? It seems like a ridiculous amount of us are in Virginia.
