commieemo

Criminalizing things: It's what's made Russia grand for years and years (that, and secret torture rooms).

Legislation is currenting being formulated in Russia to heavily regulate emo websites and ban emo and goth dress style in schools and government buildings.

The new laws are apparently being driven by fears that these "dangerous teen trends" encourage depression and suicide.

The legislation defines "emo kids" as "teenagers who wear black, have facial piercings and black hair with fringes that 'cover half the face,'" and it's been met with rampant protesting. One demonstration in Siberia saw a banner that read, "A Totalitarian State Encourages Stupidity." Sensitive but smart, these emo kids.

It's funny, Keebler, because Pete Wentz is not even emo. I have a soft spot for emo people. Not the phony Emily Strange kind, though.
And, it's true, Cord. Emo people are often smarter. We studied in psych that people who are depressed tend to have a more realistic view of the world. Too bad we're too sad to take pride in that.

This probably won't go through. Medvedev and Putin have more important things to worry about, as do most Russians, as a matter of fact. Things there get better every day, but human rights are still pretty far down the ladder.

April, you may be very smart. Having a more realistic view of the world makes one more intelligent. Usually, depressed people have a more realistiv view of the world. It's in the psychology textbook wirtten by David Myers. That's one of the most trusted psych textbooks out there.

Emo people are totally more smarter, as evidenced by the massive career pathing opportunities provided by Hot Topic.

Emo kids, when are you going to learn that the only people that care about your asymmetrical hair and fingerless lace gloves are you and the guy that's not going to hire you?

But yeah, more smarter for sure.

You know what is not "more smarter"? Rejecting a reputable study simply because you didn't expect the results. If you want, go look for some loopholes in the study. I'm sure there are plenty.
killorn, I don't like that sort of emo, too. But there are many types of emo.

Here, even the wikipedia article on depressive realism states that the prosposition that those are depressed have a more accurate view of the world is "contested."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depressive_realism
"Some studies have shown that depressed people appear to have a more realistic perception of their importance, reputation, locus of control, and abilities (Alloy and Abramson, 1979; Dobson and Franche, 1989).

People without depression are more likely to have inflated self-images and look at the world through "rose-colored glasses", thanks to cognitive dissonance and a variety of other defense mechanisms."
"Pacini, Muir and Epstein (1998) have shown that the depressive realism effect may be because depressed people overcompensate for a tendency toward maladaptive intuitive processing by exercising excessive rational control in trivial situations, and note that the difference with non-depressed people disappears in more consequential circumstances."

not to get into this at all, because i really don't want to… but. (see me getting into it now?)

technically all that stuff is contested, because all social theory is just that, "theory" - that's why all social sciences break down into 2 or 3 schools of thought, which themselves break down like endless russian dolls. so i guess we can blame the russians for sarting this whole thing to begin with.

Ilnazhad, frankie says R E L A X. Generalizing is not rejecting. Just as there are many types of emo, there are also many types of subgenres of ANYTHING popularized by culture. For the record, I also thing modern R&B is ridiculous. I am an equal-opportunity hater.

Additionally, I will be sure to enclose any sarcastic remarks in quotes henceforth to ensure that you know that things like "more smarter" are a joke.

I don't like the sort of "emo" people you were describing, as well. And I thought your comment was funny. The thing is, you were mocking a creditable study because you have a grudge against pseudo-emo culture. Wrong target. I meant the type of emo people who are truly depressed, not dressed in "depressed" clothing as a fashion statement.

"Just as there are many types of emo, there are also many types of subgenres of ANYTHING popularized by culture"
I never said otherwise. You shouldn't generalize any of them.

Don't tell me to relax. I am relaxed. You refuted my argument solely because of prejudicial beliefs. Kids in Hot Topic have nothing to do with the proposition that depressed people are often more intelligent.

Emo doesn't mean you're depressed, it means you're probably faking it, and hurting yourself for attention.

I get the whole conceiving reality for what it really is, and how bland the world is becoming, and how that can cause depression. That's a completely different topic, regarding timeless (or not trendy) psychology.

Being Emo means you're following the trend. I'm sure the person above me isn't crying right now, even though they wish they were.

Wow, ilz. Not that I care too much either way, but blindly supporting a study just because you LIKE the results doesn't make you better.

"Some studies have shown that depressed people appear to have a more realistic perception of their importance, reputation, locus of control, and abilities (Alloy and Abramson, 1979; Dobson and Franche, 1989).

Talk to anyone with a degree in science (a real science) and they'll tell you this sentence really doesn't actually say anything.

Here's some advice, from a trained scientist:

Approach your audience by talking about the METHODS and CREDIBILITY rather than implications. How did they find that:
1)Intelligence is actually linked to realistic worldviews?
2)These specific characteristics "their importance, reputation, locus of control, and abilities" are actually significantly (statistically) increased from their 'non-depressed' peers?
    3) How was this all quantified? Analyzed?

I say this because I care. If it were anyone else (say a bible-thumper trying to prove the Flood) you would simply be blasted and I wouldn't waste time trying to tell you how to be a little more convincing myself.

And I also say it because I don't believe it. Most depressed people I know are convinced they're terrible at everything and will never be smart or pretty or liked when they are actually quite capable individuals. This to me doesn't smack of 'accuracy' or 'intelligence.'
