Hey Zealotry!

Immovable zealots are immovable zealots, and frightening regardless of doctrine. So, skeptics that we are, we assumed that the rabid intensity of Scientologist Tom Cruise said no more about Scientology than Osama bin Laden does about Islam or the Westboro Baptists say about Christianity.

But we’re starting to believe differently after seeing this: a standard piece of propaganda used to introduce the uninformed to Scientology, filmed by an operative hoping to shed some light on the inner working’s of the organization. Note, this video isn’t a production of some embarrassing, extreme branch of Scientology, but a work accepted as informative by the religion.

An excerpt:

Right this instant, you are at the threshold of your next trillion years. You will live it in shivering, agonized darkness, or you will live it triumphantly in the light. The choice is yours, not ours.

If you, this minute, say, “I will, for better or for worse, go on in Scientology,” you will open the door to your own future. If you say otherwise, you slam tomorrow shut in your own face. I’m sorry, but that’s the way it really is.

And how does the speaker follow those apocalyptic claims? “We are not making any claims for Dianetics and Scientology.” OF COURSE YOU’RE NOT!!!!!!!!!

Wait, so shivering agonizing darkness isn’t hell? I swear it was one of the circles.

I am going to go jump off a bridge and blow my brains out now. As soon as I figure out the order.

not to get all serious and shit (i don’t wanna get killed in the face) but is scientology any more ridiculous than christianity or isalm or any other religion? so they believe we were populated by aliens and they have a bunch of nutty spokespeople…we believe that there’s an all knowing, all-seeing and hearing being in the sky that grants wishes and smites the un-believers. and a good percentage of us give of our incomes to support these churches that teach us that a woman 2000 years ago gave a virginal birth to the son of that same being in the sky who shall return again in a fire of blood to take the believers to heaven and leave the unbelievers here on earth. i hate to compare crazy but earth being populated by aliens seems a bit easier to believe…just sayin’.

Re: Scientology being more crazy. So maybe all religions are nuts when it comes to what they believe, but at least the more established religions have some time behind them. Not making them right, but making questioning them a bit harder. Scientology was started by a Scifi writer less than a half-century ago. All I am saying is that early Christians and Buddhists and Muslims didn’t have the interwebs, so questioning basic tenents was harder. Then they became established and voila religion. Scientology is singular in its blatant bullshitism. Not that I am defending religion of any sort - I am dealing with the sliding scale of bat-shit crazy to just plain old crazy.

I’m not sure the logistics are any crazier, j_b, but I feel just as uncomfortable with hardcore people of any religion, especially those trying to put their religion onto me. Furthermore, anyone who tells me that their (brand spaking new) religion is the only way I can be “saved” enrages me to no end.
Bit of a tangent:
In college I had an Indian friend who was Hindu. I also knew a girl (would never refer to her as a friend) who was a Christian. After a long discussion regarding religion, she declared that because he didn’t believe in her God he was obviously going to Hell. My rage comes in the form of this question:

How can it be that someone who practices THE WORLD’S OLDEST RELIGION STILL PRACTICED can be so eternally damned when your “Right” religion has only been around for the past 2000 years? What happened to all those people before Christanity was created??

So back to the topic at hand, you can see I clearly get fired up when Christians try to tell me I’m screwed, Scientologists have NO basis to tell me that I “will live in shivering agonized darkness” if I don’t choose Scientology NOW.

Touche, JB, touche. Scientology is definately the sexiest religion. If you assume that all salvation is equal (read a sham) - I would definately go with the religion that only requires that you pay money and do whatever the hell you want. Oh and has fabulous mixers. Maybe I will take a “stress test” on the way home, if the scientology table is set up.

I wonder if Scientologist realize that the music they put in the background creeps out most people to no end.

I don’t like any religion that informs me of my eternal damnation if I don’t adhere to thier beliefs. I have gotten that a lot from certain groups and I can’t help but think that God wouldn’t want those crazy ass people peddling his product.

Good points, Your Mom. Couldn’t have said it better.

Also, how cultish is it that he says (basically) ‘if you leave this room you can, but you’re stupid’ and ‘you can blow your brains out, that’s your choice’ Who the fuck says that??!

But right before that he says Christianity says that you’re going to hell if you don’t believe what they want you to…So it’s not that you’ll go to hell, but you’re an idiot and we don’t care if you blow your brains out?

Most religions leave room for doubt and that is a healthy thing to have with areas of faith. *doubting Thomas* and Buddhist ideas of questioning and answering, etc. Ultimately, that doubt will lead you to a stronger faith. If you don’t have this, then you have a cult.

Ok, so obviously no one here is aware of the fact that Scientology bleeds its’ members dry of money - requiring fees for ‘courses’.

I don’t think any other Church can claim that they charge for your salvation.

Get informed. Check out http://ocmb.xenu.net/ocmb

It’s a trove of information.

No, we are all aware of that fact. It’s widely known that the only way you can know more is if you pay more. That is why people like Tom and Travolta are so high ranking. They are filthy rich and they actually believe that shit.

Also, Bubba Ho-Tep, the entire Protestant Reformation came about due to not only the false doctrines and malpractices of the Catholic Church but also the teaching and SALE OF indulgences not to mention the BUYING AND SELLING of church positions. While I don’t support Scientology, there have certianly been missteps when it came to financial salvation in Catholocism as well (which I’m also not supportive of).

My ex got sucked into the Amway phenomenon (called Quixtar in the US at that time) and totally went off the deep end. He was buying all these CDs and videos of the success stories and was going to all of these rallies. He was a pretty fragile flower (mentally speaking) to start with, so he got sucked in hook, line, and sinker. His first indication that it was a bad idea should have been the fact that he was approached by a random guy at a gas station about it.
