Scientology got a bum rap. One dwarfish ninny jumped on a couch and professed his love for his catatonic girl bride and soon the whole world was calling everyone with a copy of Dianetics a lunatic. So Scientologists don't believe in psychiatry; so what? Christian Scientists have been eschewing doctors for years, why isn't anyone terrorizing their places of worship with fake anthrax? It's bad that Scientology demands money from its followers? Then get that collection basket out of my face, father.

Scientology isn't evil, nor is everyone who espouses the beliefs of Scientology. Actually, there's some pretty cool Scientologists out there. After the jump, meet some.

yeah, once you see "the bridge" you'll think differently. the reason scientology has gotten such a bad rap is because former members come out and expose the secrets of the cult. the members themselves are not bad people, just weak people looking for an easy way out of their problems. scientology itself is VERY evil. your point about christian churches is a valid one but you forget that putting money in the collection basket is not required for you to find salvation unlike scientology which requires that you pay if you want any type of spiritual help.

Cord is right. Christian Scientists encourage improper medical care, as well. Except they probably aren't terrorized as much simply because they do not get as much exposure. Speaking of exposure, the religion is also demerited because Tom Cruise holds such a high position.
Also, people point out how spooky the Fair Game Policy is or whatever, but the scariest aspect of Scientology is that Hubbard stated he wanted to start the religion because he knew it would make him a lot of money.

Donating to the collection basket is a personal choice and we're always told where the money is going to (getting computers for the computer lab at the school or fixing up the dilapidated steeple). Anywho, I'm Catholic and I know we get a lot of grief especially when it comes to money issues. But in my opinion it seems to me that's more in reference to Vatican issues. Because I know, sure as hell, my priest isn't walking around in Prada. The guy can barely afford cable, not to mention the priorities being the school, events, and upkeep of the church itself. But who knows, maybe I just have a good experience within my own little world (we don't get preached to about abortion or anything anti gay either, you almost forget it's a Catholic church). Either way, I can't really take a "religion" seriously which was founded by a science fiction writer to make money as ilnazhad said. And don't get me started on the aliens in 747s…

Wow. No need to call Cord a "twat."
Christianity is full of preposterous claims, too. Here is one of the many:
"The Gospels are based off eyewitness accounts from people who were alive at the time of Christ."
    http://atheistblogger.com/search/jesus+exist wrote a great counterargument:
John was written around 90A.D, and he used this as an example. Given that the average life expectancy of people back then was much lower than it is today, the chances of someone actually seeing Jesus perform a miracle, and then living to be over 70 (if we take it as read that they would have to have been around 10 years old at the time of Jesus’ death) are remote at best. Even if this did happen, the eyewitness accounts of a child are rarely 100% accurate, and so we would have to find an eyewitness who lived to be around 76 at least, which 2000 years ago would have been even more miraculous than walking on water."

Why do Christians suddenly put emphasis on evidence when it comes to Scientology?
What scares them about the belief in aliens? There is no chance that there is a lifeform more powerful than us?
    What is God then?

I sort of got sucked into the Christian abyss where they had me sort of thinking there might be an invisible man and that my personality would want a perfect world after I die in the world where the dead join hand and enjoy bless together forever. But I had doubts always and grew up and became an independent thinker. They don't have that power over me anymore.

Neither could Islam, Judaism or Scientology control my mind or beliefs anylonger.

If any of these groups have sucked you in with outrageous lies and false promises in order to get you to give them tax free money then, break loose and start thinking "outside the box", as they say.

The promise of life after death deprives people a better understanding and a better appreciation of this life. It's not an equal exchange. There's no comparing what doesn't exist with what does exist. There should be no confusing. Selling lies with the promise of an afterlife where a soul/personality is intact should be illegal.

Scientology is sort of amateur psychology. But they sell wisdom a five year old has and repackage it for adults. It's not complicated stuff. The detox stuff I'd never touch just like I barely trust a medical professional. Cedars Sinai didn't give Quaid's twins the best care, if you know what I mean. Causing healthy newborns to bleed uncontrollably, isn't what I call care. So, trusting a relatively new religious group with my health is a big no no in my book. They may mean well but innocent people meant well when they told me my food allergy was acne. They meant well, but they had no science to back up their advice. I found out through scientific experiments I conducted myself that I had a food allergy and since then, I've discovered several other food allergies I have that my family members share which they learned after I shared my discoveries with them. I wouldn't trust Scientology to detox my body, I don't know enough about their expertise on the matter. I think they can be overreaching when they attempt to detox some people. Exercise, sweating and drinking water isn't a cure all for everyone. Sure it works, but it's heard they push people too far too fast and I, for one, would be the first to run out of there if they pushed me too hard. I also never drink bottled water from plastic containers, the smell of plastic in the water was apparent. People ignore that smell apparently. Companies sold impure water for a buck and I never trusted them. They had no history of ethical conduct, who would trust them?

For the same reason, I don't belong to any religious organizations: they are overreaching claiming to understand the Universe and the human body and human nature more than they actually do. They want money but have proven to lean toward unethical conduct, as history proves. Islam still stones women, Israel sacrificed children for Yahwey, Christians deny the real age of the earth and the time line that planets, light and life were created. They all fight each other over trite differences in their beliefs, they fight over fear that the other group has too many converts, they fight because it's so easy to point fingers and say that group is crazy because X, Y and Z. They are all equally deceiving the masses and selling things they should be required to have a license to sell.

Scientology is just selling a different god and his name is L. Ron Hubbard, a real man who couldn't possibly be an authority in all of the fields he claims to be expert about.

Public school is free. They teach people how to gain skills to get a job later. Religions attempt to teach about the soul, which is only the personality. People could learn this from a book, from their parents and from life. They sell lessons when they aren't experts on the subject. What they sell is of minor value. At least, Christians don't grossly overcharge for trite lessons. But do these lessons have any value? Yes, they have some value. But they are overvalued. In order to obtain these trite overvalued lessons, people's lives and dignity are greatly reduced.

All of these religions valued money most, more than truth, more than life. They want our money tax free so they can get rich and enjoy life. They lie to us so they can enjoy life with our money.

and the child abuse/neglect of thousands of kids(Jenna Miscavige / Astra Woodcraft / etc)

    and the firvolous lawsuits
