One Can't Stress Kinda Enough

Kelly Rowland has gone on record to say that she's just learning black is beautiful, and that, prior to now, she always wanted to have lighter skin. This from Page Six:

"It's said that brown-skinned girls don't sell magazines and that's so sad," the sexy songbird tells next month's Essence. "I remember wishing I was more fair-skinned, but Tina Knowles, Beyoncé's mom, would say, 'Don't you know how beautiful you are?' She made me come into my brown beauty. I didn't get it, but now I do. I am chocolate and beautiful and loving it."

I suppose this new found sense of self extends as far as that feathered hairdo, on which Rowland spent a lot of time and money in order to make it look white.

So sad because it's still Beyonce & Rih-Rih heating up the charts and getting the most coverage when there are many more darker skinned girls with much more talent.

Rihanna is a dark-skinned girl. And I honestly don't understand why there is such a hot issue with shades of people's skin whether it's brown, peachy, olive, or pink with purple polka dots. The color of your skin has nothing to do with how talented you are and in what regard. It's 2007, aren't we past this?

We're basing her "kinda proud" on her hair? She's far from the first black woman to do the Farrah hair, and it looks cute on her.

Beyond that, I agree with evil.

Rhianna isn't dark-skinned, not in the way I've ever used the term or heard it used. And you know what? I completely understand where Kelly is coming from with this - I guess I can relate, growing up with a (very) light-skinned mother, and similar looking cousins. It would be awesome if this stuff wasn't an issue but oh well, it is.

Beyonce's Mother? Whose daughter had a nose job, blonde extensions and wears green contacts? Kelly's pretty and would look great with natural hair. (She has on way to much up)

Sadly it IS still an issue. I work with a lot of African-American youths and it is a constant sourse of insecurity. Darker skinned girls not feeling as pretty as light-skinned girls- you see it in music videos, fashion magazines, everywhere. Rappers proclaiming that without 'mutts' or light-skinned girls there would be no music videos. You're right evil twin, it's true the color of your skin shouldn't matter BUT IT STILL DOES. :(

I know it still happens. I hear my friends talking about it, and it just makes me sad to think that they are feeling disregarded by other black people for being "too dark."

As a white woman, obviously I can sympathize with them and feel hurt for them, but I cannot really know what they feel like.

But I guess white girls do the same thing to some extent by making fun of somebody's pale white legs. When I was in college all my friends would rip on me for being pale and call me "Casper."

I just think at this point in time, to base someone's worth on the shade of their skin color is preposterous.

You, mollygood, are as racist as the people that you write about…..your final statement makes that fact clear. What exactly is a "white" hair style?? Since when did hip and trendy styles become a thing reserved for those at the front of the bus? Would you prefer to see her in corn rows or a weave because that's how BLACK girls are supposed to wear their hair???? Get a clue….

Well, a "white" hairstyle is one that blacks cannot mimic without chemical or physical manipulation. It would literally be impossible for Kelly Rowland to have the hairstyle above without altering her hair with harsh chemicals or covering her real hair with extensions. That's fact. And this behavior from a woman who claims to be "chocolate, beautiful and loving it." Nice try.

I agree with Shantae…Mollygood that was a racist comment! "A white hairstyle is one that blacks cannot mimic without chemical or physical manipulation"?!?! Are you seious?!?!…Do you really believe that white women don't use chemical or physical manipulation for their "white" hairstyles??!?! So Farrah Fawcett did not use chemicals to thicken her hair for that flip…she didn't use a blow dryer (physical maanipulation) to get that look? Are you friends with any white women?!?! There are many black women (non- biracial), such as myself, who can mimic that hairstyle without chemical manipulation! Wakeup…we come in all shades and types…just like white women! DO you know how many of them put realxers in their hair and have extensions?

Wow, I missed that incredibly ignorant remark.

Seriously, Bunnie. Do you honestly think that women of all races don't "chemically or physically manipulate" their hair?? So if a black woman uses a brush to create a sleeker texture to her hair, she's not proud of her heritage?

    I'm stunned.

Be stunned. I'm stunned nobody's willing to admit that women like Kelly Rowland and Beyonce are submitting to white ideals of beauty when they straighten and feather their hair. And how about when Beyonce dyes it blond? I guess that's not a white hairstyle either, as plenty of brunette white women dye their hair blond.

That argument, by the way, that many white women go through the same procedures to straighten their hair is ridiculous. When white women are rubbing lye (http://www.growafrohairlong.com/perms.html) into their scalps to mimic afros, then you can try to compare the two. As it currently stands, it's a lazy point.

Cord, you are a part of the problem. By labeling things as "black" or "white" behavior, you cause people to feel insecure if they don't match up to your values on how things should be. As a someone with a multi-ethnic background yourself, I think you'd be more sensitive to this. I am also shocked and stunned.

Kelly Rowland had "problems" and may still have them. Hell I don't know! I doubt that she'd be caught dead in public without a European hair weave. She worshipped fair skin, envied Beyonce's Mother's Caucasion features and hair and felt not as good. If so, the girl's got issues. But I do appreciate all the liberal minded, Black/White get together 'cumbaya' floating around in this thread.

And Kitchy, stop throwing around the word RACIST just because some does not agree with your viewpoint.

    I agree with Mollygood.

If she is so proud of her skin and her colour, why wear a weave and lacefronts all the time? What is the obsession of black celebrities to cover their real hair with fake weaves and lacefronts? Is our own hair too disapointing and shameful for them?

Where is the pride in that?

It doesnt matter that Kelly Rowland wants to wear a so called "white" hairstyle. She's just simply wearing what she likes and what she feels compliments her. So I guess when white females pay for tanning that means that they are ashamed of who they are as well. I totally disagree, sometimes I wear my hair natural and sometimes I add extensions. No matter how my hair is worn I am just as proud to be a black woman. Please STOP the ignorance.
