Three months after calling into question the racial makeup of the casts in rival director Clint Eastwood's WWII films, cantankerous genius Spike Lee's WWII epic is facing its own firing line.
Italian historians and veterans alike say Lee's Miracle at St Anna, which is receiving horrible reviews, is factually inaccurate and "insulting." Critics say the film places blame for the St Anna atrocity, in which 560 civilians were murdered by SS troops, on innocents.
Miracle at St. Anna, which highlights the role of African-American soldiers in the war, suggests that anti-Fascist partisans indirectly caused the atrocity by first taking refuge in the village and then abandoning the villagers to their fate.

It also questions one of the founding myths of Italy's postwar democracy, which holds that the help the partisans gave to the Allies regained Italy the honour it had lost under Benito Mussolini, the Fascist dictator, by allying itself with Hitler and Nazi Germany.
And Italians are upset by this depiction? Who knew people were so sensitive about being called filthy, traitorous, child-murdering Nazis?
Lee defended St Anna, which is based on a novel by James McBride, in his trademark, defensive, catty fashion.
Lee was … unrepentant, saying: “I am not apologising for anything." He told Italians that there was clearly "a lot about your history you have yet to come to grips with … This film is our interpretation, and I stand behind it."

his cousin went to the same college as I did, and Spike came to give a talk on his movies.
first, he came off as SO FUCKING PREACHY and superior. I was very disappointed as I had seen and liked "Do the Right Thing".
second, the difference in the way he responded to questions from black people vs. white people was very telling. he would appear very interested in a question from a black person, and answer it in a thoughtful way.
when a white person asked a question, even if it was asked in way that indicated the person was a fan, he would be very dismissive and condescending.
the man is a bigot, pure and simple.

Spike is a punk who seems to have forgotten where he came from and who his fans are. He deserves to get what he's been giving, especially if he's inaccurate. He hasn't made a good film since Malcolm; too bad.
I'll never forget how he sued Spike T.V. for using his name. What an ego! The funny thing is, I had never EVEN HEARD OF HIM until that law suit!
