While American politicians always quietly pursue the lucrative but controversial support of Hollywood, French President Nicolas Sarkozy threw caution to the wind and dove headfirst into the fray of celebrity. The consequences have been severe.

After marrying model-cum-singer Carla Bruni, Sarkozy has seen his approval rating drop precipitously, from 54 percent to 41 percent in January alone. The citizenry apparently found the couple's courtship, which lasted all of three months, boorish.

"He is vulgar, rude and not in the right role as president of the republic," a leftist sympathizer was quoted as saying in the LH2 survey. A rightist voter said: "He is seen as a popstar when that isn't at all his job."

In all, 76 percent of those questioned disapproved of the way his private life had been put on display for all to see.

Of course, it's hard to hear the haters when in bed with your supermodel wife. Bonne chance, Sarko!
