Old School vs. New School

Hollywood never ceases to amaze us with the industry's routine absurdity, and this week is no different: In its latest issue, Us Weekly reveals that some of the new 90210 actresses are too thin. But, let's be serious here, there's no way these girls were cast for their acting abilities — the producers obviously picked who would best represent the young and beautiful. The show's leading lady (besides Lucille Bluth, of course), Shenae Grimes, is 5-foot-3 and comes in at an astonishing 90 pounds; co-star Jessica Stroup is 5-foot-8 and 100 pounds. Apparently this is alarming (you think?), so the show's producers and stars are "poised to take action," whatever that means.

Hey, remember the days when the beautiful 90210 girls actually weighed more than a feather? Poor Brenda Walsh would be shunned for being "the fat girl" if she were part of today's high school crew.

Hey! Why did Times writer Ellen Carpenter just gloss over this rather telling piece of information in Sunday's puff piece about a Thursday night on the town with R&B star Ashanti?

By dinnertime, Ashanti was starving. “I don’t remember the last time I ate,” she said as she rode an elevator to the club’s garden-floor dining room. She paused to think. “It was a Carney’s turkey burger. That was Wednesday afternoon in L.A.”

And right when you go, "Wait, wha? Before big events Ashanti starves herself?" Carpenter's already onto the famous guests in attendance at the singer's album release party.

The French Parliament is on its way to passing an unprecedented bill that recommends fines and prison sentences for people — like proprietors of those hideous and sad “pro-ana” Web sites — who promote and encourage “extreme thinness.”

Does She Think We Can't See Her?

fashion_week_arrivals_32_wenn1788325.jpg

Nicky Hilton wants everyone to know that she doesn't have an eating disorder. Paparazzi photos taken recently, showing Nicky looking like a sack of skin and bones, were simply taken from "unflattering angles."

There's no truth to any starvation, eating disorders, rumors.

I think the press has been printing a lot of pictures of me from unflattering angles. My friends see the pictures and they're like 'Oh my god are you okay?' And then they see me, and they're like 'Oh…' It's really not that interesting or true.

OK, Nicky. We'll give you the "not that interesting" part, but we still think you could stand to eat a burger or five. Or maybe not, since this is obviously giving you the only attention you've had in the past year.

Someone Should Inform The New Miss America

splashnews_spl16067_011.jpg

Kirsten Haglund, who was crowned Miss America Saturday night, revealed that she used to be anorexic. A beauty pageant contestant who suffered from an eating disorder — there's something you don't see every day.

Just three years ago, [she] was eating tiny portions of food and became so thin her concerned parents "dragged me to the doctor."

Haglund was diagnosed with anorexia, and the lack of nutrition caused her collar bones to stick out, her heart rate to drop and her relationships to suffer.

"I would feel fatigued walking up six stairs," the 19-year-old Haglund said Sunday, a day after being crowned Miss America 2008. "I was a completely different person. It's not a pretty sight."

She went on to say that she gave up on her original dream of becoming a professional ballerina to escape an environment that rewarded her for being slim. … So she moved on to beauty pageants. A logical choice.

Which singer keeps her slender frame so thin the old-fashioned way? Seems a "major eating disorder" helps keep her midriff worth baring.

There's no doubt you can answer this, right?

A Star cover's quotes of regret:

• "Ya'll crying-ass babies was mistakes!"

• "Ordering seven slices of radish was a huge mistake. Take away these five."

• "All them years of margs and sluts in sarongs was a mistake, baby."

• "We've got to fuck quietly so as not to awaken my lesbian wife, whom I mistakenly married believing she was straight."

Dear Star,
Are most of your exclamation points a mistake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best,

Is it uncouth to request your party guests don't bring creepy dates who are noticeably ill? One would imagine that such a person would make everyone else feel a tad uncomfortable, thereby putting a damper on the whole affair. Though I suppose people who like to attend events in the Hamptons are skilled at ignoring ugly realities.

More after the jump.

Regardless of any debate that can be had regarding weight problems, Calista Flockhart is proof positive that almost no unhealthy lifestyle is irreversible. After not-eating her way to a double-digit figure during her Ally McBeal era, Flockhart is now a mother, seemingly healthy and starring in a fairly innocuous show that people don't hate. Three cheers for healthy weight gain correlating to only marginal career declines.

Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley have become the best of friends on the set of their new film, The Edge of Love, about famed poet Dylan Thomas. They've become so close, in fact, that they're house hunting for cottages adjacent to one another.

In the film the two feisty, free-spirited women are connected by the charismatic poet, who loves them both.

As we revealed earlier this week, 25-year-old Sienna stepped into the role of Caitlin MacNamara - Thomas’s wife - in the movie when Lindsay Lohan pulled out after she was asked to take a drugs test.

We’re told Sienna and 22- year-old Keira have become inseparable on the set in New Quay, Wales, so much so they are currently househunting for neighbouring cottages overlooking the sea there.

We’re told: "Sienna and Keira feel it would be great to have homes there and go on joint holidays once filming stops, so they can keep up their friendship.

This story's pretty "blah," but an interesting thing to note is that, as Knightley fends off a constant barrage of anorexia rumors, Miller has yet to encounter such accusations. Yet, looking at the photograph above, it's obvious that Knightley's legs are much larger than Miller's.

What does this mean? Finally, some solid evidence: Blonds do have more fun.

Amy Winehouse, seen here scaring children poolside with fiance Blake Fielder-Civil, really adds the adjective "functioning" to any number of nouns, including: anorexic, bulimic and substance abuser. She's yet to die and, live, she puts on absolutely amazing shows with a voice as soulful as any vocalist working today.

Let's hope she cleans up and quits slashing her arms soon so that future generations might appreciate her. Then again, there's always this school of thought.
